Hello,
What is your Coates family line that immigrated to Nova Scotia in 1772?
Do you have any information about the Coates family before they left for
Canada?

I am seeking any information about a Joseph COATES, stonemason, who
was active in Yorkshire in the 1840s and 1850s. He was married to a
woman named Elizabeth, and on 4th August 1854 they had a son, Thomas
Richard COATES, in Huntington. The baby was christened onthe 13th of
August that year in the Huntington parish church. We believe the
parents died between then and 1861, when the son appears living in
Huntington with an aunt and uncle (Thomas SMITHSON, born in Alne,
and wife Jane, born in Huntington), where he remained to adulthood.
The only information we have that can be confirmed is the baptism
record of Thomas Richard COATES and the fact that he named Joseph
COATES, stonemason, as his father on his marriage certificate.
There is another Joseph COATES, stonemason, with a wife Elizabeth --
these people appear in the 1851 and 1861 censuses in Falsgrave. I
have found a possible Joseph COATES listed in the 1851 census as
unmarried, aged 23, born Rastrick. At the time he was listed as a
stone dresser and was lodging in Holme Bridge in Holme, Honley.
Family oral tradition has it that Joseph COATES worked on York
Minster following a fire there in the 1840s.
Any information regarding the marriage of Joseph COATES, his wife
Elizabeth's maiden name, either's birth or baptism information or
their death and burial information would be very, very helpful!
