John, any of these areas look familiar? Well, let's see Hunting creek is
where I found the land records...but as I recall they were for Rowan County
NC not Wilkes? I don't know what all that *marked out and marked in* is
refering to...as I recall the Hunting Creek land was near the Iredell County
area?
Char
The below is from another Baker researcher...I don't have all these
books...<g>...
****************
I have all of the Wilkes Co. Deed Books and Court Order Books but only see
him in the Land Entry Book. This book has more info than you had below:
Mrs. W. O. Absher, Land Entry Book Wilkes County, N.C., 1778-1781, (Easley,
SC: Southern Historical Press, 1988) Entry Numbers 161, 285, 1339
No. 161 3 June 1778 Elijah Clay e. 320a both sides Little Fork Hunting
Creek... below Silvester Bakers including improvement whereon John Howard
lives.
No. 285 25 Aug 1778 Sylvester Baker e. 100a joining John Howards claim ...
up Hunting Creek on both sides ... (Sylvester Baker marked out ... Isaac
Reaves written in ... Jon. Forbush written in ... but marked out)
No. 1339 4 Dec 1779 Silvestor Baker e. 50a wates Bear Branch near Abednego
Bakers line ... including the good land ... (Silvestor Baker marked out ...

There is:
(Numbered columns are: 1. free white males over 16 including head of house
2. free white males under six 3. free white females)
all on the same page in the index, page 142
Solomon Coats 1-1-3
William Coats 1-1-7
John Coats 1-2-5
1790 Guildford County NC
James Coats 1-0-5
Sylvester Baker's family is: 1-4-4
I add this for comparison - his sons were all under 16, oldes would be
Sylvester, jr, earliest birth date for him 1774, but Nancy was older than
her - so they show she was born in 1775 in this DAR book on Stokes County NC
folks...they also show she died before 1835 but she died or her estate
probate was 1849; they show she married Rev William Coats in 1790; now if
Sylvester was in Stokes County, they must have been married in Stokes County
NC??? They show a birth date for him of 1765 and he died in 1835....
Their reference is: Baker, Womack & Other Kin, by Martha McDaniel Thompson
in CA...gives her full addy but I won't post here...
This isn't all the Coats in the 1790 census...just the William caught my
eye...

Well, my interest of course in the Baker line is that it could help place my
Coats line...Rev William Coats m Nancy Baker Coats
I received today a copy of:
Early Families of the North Carolina Counties of Rockingham and Stokes with
Revolutionary Service, Vol 2 (haven't checked Coats yet..)
But it says that Sylvester Baker, father of Nancy Baker Coats was in Stokes
County NC and on the 1790 and 1800 Censuses for Stokes Co, NC and then left
for a two year stay in Wayne Co, KY ... and the rest we know...
So, there it is...??

Dear Listers ,
My brick wall is James McKenzie Coats born in Tn. about 1815 (per Intruders
list of whites in the Cherokee Nation West in 1860 ) . He married 1st .
Elizabeth Martin daughter of Samuel Martin and Catherine Hilderbrand.
Elizabeth Martin and her family lived on Candy CreekTn . Samuel Martin was
given a reservation for life in that area. Reading records pertaining to
Cherokee , I found the following information. Gideon E. Coats was ordered to
be removed in the Cherokee exodus of 1837 along with a total of 9 persons
Of These 8 were listed as slaves . He was to remove himself and these
person in question from Candy Creek Tn.. This information appears in an
issue of "Cherokee Blood Newsletter" edited and published by Shirley Coats
Hoskins of Atlanta , Ga. Cherokee and or indians were frequently listed as
non-white or black at this time.
James McKenzie Coats was born in Tn. married 1st. Elizabeth Martin daughter
of Samuel Martin . Samuel Martin was given a reservation for life at Candy
Creek Tn. James McKenzie Coats and his 2nd wife's children appear in the Old
Settlers Rolls of The Cherokee Nation West in the Saline district in1851.
James McKenzie Coats appears as an intruder (white) living in the Cherokee
Nation West in 1860 .
Some persons have speculated that Gideon E.Coats was Cherokee . Gideon
Edward Coats was said to be married to Arena Berkey . Anyone have any
information on either Gideon E. Coats , Arena Berkey and or James McKenzie
Coats please enlighten us .
Thank you ever so much ,
Nell Coats

Craven County was one of those old big counties before it was split into
smaller diferent named counties...
And yes, Joseph was in the Camden/Kershaw County area...
This Henry or all the Henry's for that matter was in the Newberry County
area of Craven County...other than Notley Coats who was in Chester
County...most of the early Coats were in that Newberry County back country
area...although William Coats died in Camden District...
We know that Gabriel, was in SC moved to NC...I'm just wondering if Wylie
Coats was in SC moved to NC then to TN...Wylie, I'd say for sure would be a
female surname at this point in time...
Beverly, btw, was also a surname...thus Beverly Coats...but I've seen a
Beverly family in the records as well...not in SC but either TN or KY or
NC...well, guess I narrowed that pretty well...<g>..
Anyway...Linda, correct me if I'm wrong here...but the early Henry was your
Henry is that right?
Also in that index...it shows 1767 dates for both Marm and William ...
William being the William with the 200 acres on the Bush River...

Quite interesting. There are almost as many Henrys as there are Williams so
that part doesn't excite me all that much but the Wylie surname connected
with Coats certainly does! What do we know about the Craven County folks?

Let's see....a Henry Coats along with a Jane Wylie and an Elizabeth
Wylie......all in Craven in 1768. Sure wish a plat would spell out
relationships<g>.
I seem to recall a Joseph Coats also in Craven in 1772, but I don't know if
he lived on or near Bush River. I think the Joseph I am citing here was
later found in Camden District in 1779 on the east side of the Wateree
River.
John, what are your thoughts about the appearance of the name Wylie in
conjunction with a Henry Coats in SC? (all before 1778!).
Larry
