Not at the moment, but the payoff may come if one or more additional
test results come back with the *same* mutation (either one, but not
both, you hope). If that happens, you can conclude that the ones with
the matching mutation *probably* share a more recent common ancestor
than the group as a whole.

Your best bet is to test more Lovelaces. Best of all would be to find
some Lovelaces in England to join in. This may not be easy, but go for
it!

Don't knock it! That's a very profound and useful insight. It's
exactly what you were hoping to learn from this project, isn't it?
You could add that both patterns are typical of European Y DNA (no
surprise there).

Charlotte:
Would you see that this gets posted to the COATES-L, I seem to be having
trouble doing that.
My grandfather, Solomon Coats - born 1881 in Thackery, Ill - had one full
blood brother, Charles and five half brothers. The father of all six boys
was Solomon, Sr. son of Sion Coats who first married Lucy Simpson and later
married Catherine Musgrave. The half brothers were named William (Billy)
born abt. 1858, John born abt 1860, George born abt 1865, Columbus (Lum)
born 1866 and Silas.
Lum had the following boys Roy, Billie, and Ivan. I have a picture of this
family living in Hamilton County, Ill in 1912. I have pictures of John
taken in Ill in 1940 at the age of 81. Does anyone know anything about
these men and their decendants? I only know my grandfather and his brother
Charles decendants. Charles' only grandson, Duane Coates lives in Southern
California.

Apparently they can do ethnic DNA testing....for those who want more
information on DNA, this genealogy-dna list is really detailed and I think
you can subscribe to it via rootsweb.com....Char

There are some situations where I definitely think it's wise to begin with a
25 marker test, for example the Scottish clans study or the Welsh
patronymics
project. They are likely to encounter a lot of similar haplotypes, so a 25
marker test will help sort those out.

The DNA testing is open to any male with a surname of Coate, Coates, Coats,
Cotes, Coots, Couts, the last three because we've seen some documents with
those spellings in them...
We would like at least one decendant from each line, whether proven or not,
this will help us to form groups of matching people...this in turn will help
with traditional research...there are Coats with known ancestors (although
few and far between...:)), they would be the base for matching others to
that family group...
It's a simple test of a cheek swab sent back to the Family Tree DNA
lab...(no blood needed - I'm out anyway on searching records...:)). You can
order your own kit, someone can order it for you, you can order one for
someone else...payment options are invoice sent with the kit or credit
card...cost is $99.00 for the Y-Chrom test plus $2.00 postage so the total
is $101.00. Considering what I've spent and I know that others have spent
doing research on this family, this is very inexpensive!!
Any questions, please don't hesitate to contact me. It will probably be
awhile before we get any results back, just one more way to help put the
pieces of the puzzle together...

Charlotte,
I understand what you mean. Just hang in there. I know we can make several
connections. As an example: did you know Susan Packer's mother was Ann
Coates. Something to think about.
Capt. James Callaway, for whom the county of Callaway, Missouri was named
was
a close companion of Daniel Boone. They fought together, hunted together and
who knows what else. They all fit together, we just need to figure out which
married each other. HA!
All of these people were in Ashe, Rowan, Grayson, and many more counties
together. In fact the Callaway's came to Ashe County with James, Esq. and
other Bakers.

I'm a descendant of the Jeremiah Coats who resided in IL and his
father,Benjamin Coats who d. in 1850 in Smith Co., TN. I only know of one
son for Jeremiah, a John and in the 1900 census of Johnson Co., TX John
listed 2 sons, Henry and William Mc Coats so there are possibly some male
coats out there from this line but I haven't found them yet. Another
possibility for this line would be the descendants of Benjamin's son,
Wilson. Does anyone know anything about him? I would love for this line to
be included.

I forgot about the Charleston, SC connection. If I recall correctly, we have
a William or two there at about the same time. The DNA testing will be worth
it even if it only serves to eliminate one or more of the possibilities.

Everything John has said is absolutely true regarding the Great Wagon Road.
And to round out the picture, there was a smaller, but still heavily
traveled route that started in Charleston SC and went in a northwesterly
direction into the SC and NC backcountry, intersecting the Great Wagon Road
not far from Salisbury, NC(again, if my memory serves me right).

Ok, I think the William Coate, wife Mary, who died in Newberry County about
1822, will probated Jan of 1823 was the William Coate who devised the land
of 1766 - names all his kids in his will and his wife...recall, there is a
Seaborn who also gets land on the Bush River in 1766, I thought that might
be this land taken under his name and surveyed for William Coate, but I
think there is also some question as to whether or not William's petition
was requested in 1766 or 1767 - so we know that both Seaborn and Coats are
connected via William wife, who was a Seaborn I believe - so that is a
possiblity as well...except we don't know where any of these pieces of land
bordering the Bush River is located on the Bush River at present...Thomas
and James Coats also had land on the Bush River...
I also think it was his son William Coate that died in 1830 - I think his
wife's name was Elizabeth and his brother Ruben Coate also purchased items
at the estate sale...
Both wills are located in the South Carolina Documents section of the Coats
Archive...
Have we ever placed these two?
Now also as I recall there was a document with Henry Coats and a William
Coats in it (Coats=all variations), so we know there was another William
Coats there prior to Henry's death in 1829.
Did we ever place this William Coats?
Also, William Coate that purchased land from the Wright - I think we found
where he sold it, but I don't recall finding other land for him...did we
ever decide what happened to him?
I think there might be another William Coats on Scotts Creek, other than the
William Coats 1766 as well, the one next to Nance...
William Coats on Kings Creek is the other William in Newberry SC, but he
dies in Kershaw or Camden District about 1784, if I recall correctly...seems
to me there was also a Wilson Coats in Camden that had land - might this be
his son before Bedford County TN? Thus he died at the home of Wilson Coats?
Just some thoughts...

One other thing: Kits are group priced,
The kits, if you go through a group or our group is only $99.00 for the Y
Chrom test...the $149.00 testing is if you just add your DNA without going
through a group...
It's only if you match with someone else that you may want to go to the
24/25 marker test to see where in time your common ancestor may be...that
then is an additional $90.00 when you go through a group...

These are the lines that have DNA in the works...what we'd like to do is
eventually have at least one participant for each line...which will give us
a good bases for matching other participants...or however, it works out...:)
These are folks that have currently ordered kits...
Lines signed up for DNA:
Marmaduke Coats m Mary Coppock, NJ, SC, OH
Wiley Coats, NJ, NC, TN
Rev William Coats, SC, TN, MO
Thomas Coats, NC, TN
Henry Coats/Pitts group, SC, GA
John Coats, sr m to Catherine (Laurens County SC), SC
Native American - we have one member that also ordered a Native America
test...

Ok if you think you come from another line, or one of these lines and would

We now have six unique people in the testing group or 7 kits sent...
I also got the kit sent to my Cousin our line is this:
Proven back to: Rev William Coats m Nancy Baker Coats of Robertson/Smith
County TN, Callaway County MO all documentation is located at:
http://www.rootsquest.com/~coatsfar
Possible theories for SC connection and GA connection:
Rev William Coats may be the son of:
William Coats, Kings Creek, SC - support for this theory is the fact that
William Coats sells land to a John Baker in Robertson County TN, where
Barton Coats, eldest son of William Coats of Kings Creek is living in the
Red River Settlement - I think this could be the same John Baker who leaves
part of his estate to Nancy Baker Coats in her 1849 probate in Callaway
County MO. Barton Coats is a known son of William Coats on Kings Creek
Gentleman John Coats via his son John Coats jr of Laurens County SC (let's
see did we have this John connection?) if not then just John Coats, jr of
Laurens County SC
Rev William Coats is also suppose to be connected to Morgan Coats of GA and
possibly Charles Coats of GA, the 1797 Charles there...
There are also other possibilities...
Possible theories of connections in PA:
James Coats m Mary Watson, who was the brother of Samuel Coats m Mary
Saunders, James had at least two sons: John2 and James, he had a son John1,
who died earlier than John2
Possible theories of connections in NJ:
William Coats, Kings Creek, SC is thought to be the William Coats connected
to the NJ group of Coats according to O'neals History of Newberry County, SC
Actually as far as I'm concerned anything prior to Robertson/Smith County TN
is open, frustrations abounding!!

Ladies, if there is male Coats, Coate, Coates surname in your line that will
agree to sending in a sample, you can order the test kit for them...it will
be sent directly to them by the company and they then send it back to the
company...
If they are paying for it, you just include an invoice which goes with the
kit...if you are paying for it, you can use a credit card as a third party
billing...
