Where did your Coans originate ? Was it Holland or Germany ? Mine were born
and bred in U.K. from the fifteenth century, Only one went to the States -
Cecil Coan - and that was to Georgia. in the 1910's. They had something to
do with the film industry.

Sorry this branch of the Coans are mainly from Norwich and in the 1880's
were still in the U.K. apart from one lot who went to Australia and another
lot went to Georgia in the 1900's and some others went to Canada in the
1950's.
Where did your people originate ? Possibly Holland or Germany ?
Please reply Thanks. Eileen

Eileen,
Well, I was never able to track them to "the boat" that brought them
over. Actually, it's weirder than that. We believe they actually went
by the name COON, but in the 1850 Census, they change it to COAN.
We're believed to be descended from a John D. COON, who was born in
Fayette Co., PA....think it was in the 1770s...and dies in Indiana
(found the grave) as John D. Coan. Never figured out who his father
was or when they arrived from where. It's been 10 years since I've
looked at my files, I'm afraid.

Based on location, Fred was probably of the Connecticut Coans, not the
Midwestern (Indiana) Coans, of which I descend.

I've "rescued" an old photograph of Fred G. COAN which was taken at the Pach
Bros. Studio in New York City, New York. The photograph is dated Jun 29th
1885 with Fred likely in his 20's or 30's at the time the photograph was
taken. In addition to his name and the date he appears to have written
"Very Sincerely" on the back of the photograph, likely a gift to someone. I
am hoping to locate someone from Fred's family so that this treasure can be
returned to the family.
If you are a member of this COAN Family, or you know someone who might be,
please contact me.
