Subject: [COAKLEY] Spotsylvania Co., VA Coakley Family
Hi everyone,
I'm wondering if anyone knows anything about the Coakley family that
settled in the Fredericksburg, VA area in the early 1800s.
A John Coakley b. before 1765 shows up in the Spotsylvania Co, VA
census in 1810. By 1830, he appears to have died, but now a younger
John, presuably his son, is there. This John and his wife Eliza have
daughters Mary b. abt. 1838 and Virginia b. abt. 1846. The only
other Coakley's in the county in that census are a John and Charles
ages 14 and 16 leaving with a Chesley family apparently as apprentice
saddlers. The elder John did not have any sons per the 1840
census, so these boys aren't likely his unless they were living
elsewhere then too.
The younger John married Josephine Wingfield by 1860 and had a
daughter Bessie. They also appeared to have a son Eugene in 1863.
I believe John T. Coakley fought in the Civil War in the 30th VA
Infantry, and by 1870, was no longer with his wife. She was living
with another familiy with her daughter Bessie, and son Eugene was her
parents, Benjamin and Rebecca Wingfield. John T. Coakley was living
in Baltimore for some reason making harnesses. Eugene would
eventually settle in the Baltimore area also.
Can anyone shed light on this family in Spotsylvania Co.?
Eugene Coakley went on to have 10 children in Harford County, MD.
