Yes I am his grand daughter and very proud to say so. My mom Josephine married Arnold Chafe from Petty Hr and raised their family here. Myself and my two sisters all live in Petty Hr!!! Your so right about the Coady Family and their love for family, music, story telling, playing cards and entertaining. They loved having a good laugh for sure with anyone who would be in their home or in the downtown area. Pop always kept his accent from the Southern Shore and so very proud of his roots. He always said I am John Coady from Bear Cove!!!!

I remember fondly of pop telling us how they left Bear Cove on a cock of hay!!!! He also had a brother Andrew(Andy) who lived on Shea Heights with his family. He was a very quiet man but again spoke highly of his birthplace. So nice to hear stories of my grandfathers family. Pop Coady was a remarkable person and loved by too many to ever be forgotten.

You are absolutely right as they did live on an old Shipwreck on what was from memory Molloy's Lane in St. John's, they lived there with another couple of Families and I actually have a picture of my Grandfather sat on the boat. So maybe he made up that toast, who knows? He spoke of Renews fondly right up until he passed away in his 90's, he was the jolliest, sweetest Man ever. His sister Aunt Marg had the Same personality. They always spoke highly of the Fowlers and Roche's from Renews as they were great Friends. His memories were fond of his life in Bear Cove.
Regards
Jackie

Jackie, it is hardly more than a month ago that my brother was talking about that "toast." And I couldn't remember it off hand. My brother was saying that he was sure my late husband - Billy Fowler - told me about that. And I do remember most things - but that must have slipped my mind. No doubt he mentioned it because Billy was a firm believer in remembering one's heritage.
Now my brother thought that there was even more to that "toast" and thought it was a song. But like you, he only remembered these same words. And maybe you are right, it might have been just a toast.
My brother thought that it actually referred to your grandfather. He believe that when your grandfather came to St. John's first that he lived aboard a boat - The Beverley. And, of course, the places mentioned would be - Bear Cove where he was born - the Southside of Renews where the family moved (Incidentally, near the homestead of the ladies who raised me), and Frenchman's Cove - a cove near Cappahayden. Now I don't know if the information about the Beverley is correct or not.
Yes, about my story about the "William Coady" from Boston.. Now maybe it was in the nineties but your Aunt Mag was invited to a party for my mother-in-law's - Gertie Fowler's - birthday - and anyway she was telling us the story of the phone call at that time because it had just happened that week. Now no doubt she was telling the truth about the phone call BUT what the callers on the other end were up to - of course, she had no idea.
Regards,
Mary Teresa

I'm Kim's Sister from a previous post;
The man referred to that went missing was my Grandfathers Brother, the story we were told as Children was that he left in a boat belonging to the Woolridge's and apparently fell overboard because he never returned nor was his body recovered. My Grandfather was John Coady originally from Bear Cove but married a Jenny Mullowney from Bay Bulls and moved to St. John's where he worked for the City of St. John's and raised his Family. As a small child I can remember people visiting from Renews which always evolved Song, Stories and a good game of Cards. I also know of a toast my Grandfather would give when they would have a drink which went something like this;" I'm living on the Beverley surrounded by a Grove, here's good luck to Bear Cove, Southside and Frenchman's Cove" We always made many trips to Renews and Cappahayden as they had an old Shack in Chance Cove that we frequently spent time every Summer. It only burnt down a couple of years ago. Nice to know of others that are s!
till around that knew of our Family.

Yes, Zachery, Bay Bulls is near Renews. It is possible that the Coadys from Bay Bulls and Bear Cove are related BUT it is more likely that the Coadys from Bay Bulls are related to the Coadys frorm Cape Broyle - another community which is in the area between Bear Cove and Bay Bulls.
Years ago - I guess early 1900s - a William Coady from Bear Cove went to sea and was never heard from again. It is not known if he was lost at sea or what happened to him - if he settled elsewhere, etc.. But his mother to her dying day always believed that he was still living.
It must be in the 1980s that his only surviving sister in St. John's, Newfoundland, received a call from a hospital in Boston saying that an old gentleman - William Coady - who was not at all well had asked a nurse to track down his sister in Newfoundland. The gentleman figured where she was the youngest of the family she might be the only one left for him to contact.and the nurse said the gentleman mentioned that he was originally from Bear Cove. Apparently, he wanted his sister to fly to Boston and visit him in the hospital,
Now obviously his sister was very taken aback by this news and wasn't even sure if the call was a hoax or not and she wasn't really in a position to fly to Boston at that time. She never heard anything after back from the hospital - if indeed, the call was EVER from the hospital in the first place. But the caller said she was calling from Boston. Obviously, this story might have no connection to the people you are researching or indeed MIGHT NOT HAVE EVEN BEEN a legitimate call. I just thought I would mention it though since you referred to Coadys in Boston.in your information at your profile.
Certainly, it would be wonderful though if the Coady family originally from Bear Cove could ever discover what ever happened to William.
Regarding Bennetts, there is a Renews connection to that family name - although I am not sure how far back that goes through the years.

Hi, looking for relatives in Renews' area. Great grandparents Andrew and Catherine Dinn Coady moved to St. John's late 1880's. Andrew died in St. John's around 1913 and Catherine died in 1906. They had Children, William who died of consumption in 1902 at 19 years of age in St. John's. Richard Patrick who drowned in St.John's harbour in 1929 at 44 years old, Mary who married an O'Neil in St. John's , Andrew, my Grandfather who passed away in 1947 at 52 years, and Elizabeth, im thinking she died young because nothing is known about her. If any of this information is familiar please let me know. My great grand father was a fisherman, as i think was the way back then.
Thanks

Lovely stories you've shared. Thank you! I've managed to track my wife's father's family back to Bay Bulls, which I understand is near Renews, but haven't managed to get any further. Perhaps the Coady's of Renews and those of Bay Bulls were related?
Very best,
Zach Feris
All are welcome to view the Coady's, Bennett's Fardy's and others in my tree on Ancestry.

Hi Kimberly,
So nice to connect! So you are John's granddaughter. :) I've lived in Bear Cove from 1975 to 2011 when my husband passed away :( <3 but myself and my children still maintain our family home there and visit on many weekends. My mother-in-law was Gertude Coady Fowler - your grandfather's cousin.
It's not that long ago when I put an old picture on Facebook of Bear Cove residents in the 1960s, I posted about how your grandfather never forgot his roots and he would always be around to meet people from the up the shore when they came into the city and went shopping down on Water Street, He always had a smile for everyone - and he and his brothers and sister were never forgotten by his relatives in Bear Cove.
The Coadys were certainly a family who had their priorities right - family, friends, humor, and music. Although I married in Bear Cove in 1975, I remember visiting in Bear Cove when I was probably just 4 or 5 and I remember visiting Thomas Coady's - where Pete and Mabel and Babe Coady lived as well - and even in my child's mind - they made an impression on me. It was a visit I never forgot - and a lesson I learned that stayed with me since - and of course, I could never have foreseen that I would later marry into the Coady/Fowler family. Material possessions were not important to them - it was just all about welcoming friends and getting the fiddle on the go.:)
So pleased to meet you here! Take care.

Andrew Coady from Bear Cove, Renews is my great uncle. He is a brother of my grandfather John Coady born October 1900. Most of their family members are living in the St John's area. They are a family who love a good laugh and family/friends.
