Thanks for that Joe. I acknowledge that there are three other Anns who are good candidates to be my Ann (see following, including Ann daughter of James). However I concluded that an unrecorded birth for the family who were actually living at North Hill was a stronger candidate, given that my Ann's age meant that such a birth was a possibility. It is not unknown for a baptism to be lost in the time between the event and the recording of it. I have also just recently realised that Will Coad was one of the witnesses to John Harries and Ann Coad's 1780 marriage at North Hill. This is likely to be William Coad born 1756, the next youngest child of Samuel and Ruth (with my Ann born ca 1759).
(1) Ann CODE, 16 Jul 1758, South Hill, Cornwall, parents James and Eleanor (aka Petronella). South Hill is about 6 miles east of North Hill.
**Is the fact that the daughters’ last names were not recorded in James's 1794 Will an indication that they were spinsters? Joe, do you know whether any of the other mentioned daughters were married? My Ann Coad married in 1780.
(2) Ann COAD, 3 Aug 1760, Stoke Climsland, Cornwall, parents Daniel and Deborah. Stoke Climsland is under 10 miles east of North Hill.
(3) Ann COAD, 6 May 1759, Lezant, Cornwall, parents William and Catherine. Lezant is under 6 miles north-east of North Hill.
Of course, if there were burial records for any of these females, they would be ruled out. But I did not find anything relevant at Familysearch or FreeREG.
Joe, are you able to say whether these families are related? If I was so lucky as to get a DNA match one day, would it be useful in helping to rule out one or more of these families? Sadly, the genetic distance to my Coad ancestor means that an autosomal DNA test is unlikely to result in any matches, but you never know! You have to match some of your 8th cousins! I know you have worked with Y-DNA only, but some of your conclusions might be able to be extrapolated?
Jean

My Coad ancestry is quite distant, but I live in hope that I will get a Coad autosomal DNA match. My Ancestry username is jeanffrench and my relevant tree is called “2012online”.
My 5G grandparents were Ann COAD and John HARRIS (or HARRIES), who married in 1780 at North Hill, Cornwall. John Harris was baptised at North Hill in 1758, but I cannot find a baptism for Ann Coad.
Samuel and Ruth Coad were baptising children at North Hill from 1739 to 1756 (William 1739, Samuel 1743, Samuel 1744, Nicholas 1751, Margaret 1754, William 1756), but there is no record of a child named Ann. It is possible that Samuel and Ruth were Ann's parents given that her assumed birth year falls just outside that range, ie 1759 (Ann Harris died aged 84, widow of John Harris, labourer, in March 1843 at Linkinhorne).
Until evidence proves otherwise, I have assumed that my Ann was the daughter of Samuel and Ann, whose baptism ca 1759 was not recorded at North Hill.
I have Joe Flood's marvellous publication, and recommend it to anyone with an interest in the Coad surname.
