Hi Joe,
No, William Peter Coad, the son by a second marriage, did not die whilst prospecting but his father William Coad is supposed to have died while prospecting, which is the family story told by his first family in Moonta South Australia.
I suspect that William Coad who married Mary Hince is the same person who married Matilda Russell and deserted his family on 28 June 1880. This information can be found in the South Australian Police Gazette of November 10, 1880.
The SA Police Gazette entry for Nov 10 1880, describes William Coad as:
a miner, aged 24 years, height 5ft 7in. or 8in., light brown hair, reddish whiskers, full face, eyes sunken and one rather lighter in colour than the other.
He was arrested by Foot Constable Hampton at Moonta for deserting his wife.
Now the family story passed down to my Grandma was that William had died in the Snowy Mountains region while prospecting for gold ...
I am beginning to suspect that such family stories are a euphemism for a husband deserting his wife because William's father-in-law William Russell is said to have died whilst prospecting for gold in Victoria.
But looking through Trove, I have found newspaper articles where Mary Anne (Norah or Nora) Russell nee Ryan, had been granted destitude board rations in 1861, there is no mention of her being a widow like the other person in the same article who received such rations.
Although, another family story about Mary Anne Russell nee Ryan, is that being Irish, she is said to have seen Bill Russell's ghost about the time he is said to have died.
Unfortunately, I have never been able to find any evidence of a William Russell dying on the Gold Fields of Victoria.
So, I have a strong suspicion that William Coad moved from Moonta to Queensland where he met and married Mary Hince and had more children.
I would really like to contact William Coad and Mary Hince descendants to see if they have a photograph of William Coad. It would be useful to see if there is a family resemblance to John Coad, his son by his first marriage.
I have a photograph of his son John Coad, the one who was charged with attempting to murder his wife Mary G. I. Crowe.
I haven't had much luck so far contacting a descendant of William Coad and Mary Hince but hopefully this post may help in that direction.
Cheers,
John

Hm I have a note that William Coad died of TB 1910. Is it William Peter (the son by second marriage) that died prospecting?
