We have yet another big success for the Y-DNA project. We have believed for a long time that the Coads of SE Devon are a different family than the Coads and Coodes that originated around Liskeard in Cornwall - and now it is proven in a most surprising way.
Dennis Coad is descended from the Ermington Coads of Devon, and his long wait for a DNA match is over. He has a match with Michael Coad, our first St Stephen in Brannel Coad to be tested. The Brannel Coads descend from Anthony Coad or Cood who setled in the Brannel area near St Austell in the 1670s. Anthony had eight sons and his descendants are easily the largest group of Coads in Britain and the rest of the world - I have 3400 descendants in their database. So we have the surprising result that the largest group of Cornwall Coads actually come from Devon, and were originally called COWDE (Cowherd) or CODD.
However - very few of them seem to be interested in their origins and Michael Coad, who actually lives near St Austell in Cornwall, is the only member of the family in contact with us.
Exactly what someone from distant Devon was doing in St Stephens in the 1670s is a mystery. There seems to have been a bit of a population explosion there, and three other Coads called Edward, Theophilus and William also turned up around the same time. It is possible the family had already been in Cornwall for generations.
We still have three or four smaller West Country Coad families to be tested but I expect them to fit into one of these three families.

I have no knowledge of children, and did not know where they both came from
or where they went, well done for finding that marriage, I have looked through ancestry and they do not have it, the only other link I have is a Catherine Mainstone died in St Mabyn Workhouse Cornwall in 1847. I have not been able to find her in the 1841 census at all. You are right about Catherine though she does seem a bit too old although takes all sorts doesn't it?
