The original Coads are in fact from Devon and Cornwall but in the 1800s a number of others liked the sound of the name and adopted it.
We have done some work on the Afro-American Coads, descendants of slaves - which is here somewhere on the site. In the period after emancipation, many slaves took the names of their former owners, but as with all new surnames things were very fluid and adapted rapidly.
As far as I can tell the black Coads came off the Carolina plantation of CADD, but within two generations (by 1900) had adjusted the name to COAD.
There was one Catholic family of COAD in Maryland who were serious slave owners in the 1850s. However as far as we know their emancipated slaves did not take that name.
Hope this can assist you in studying your origins!

Well I have to say this is pretty exciting.
Thank you for responding to my message, it was a stab in the dark that has paid off.
Matilda and William had 4 children that I can verify, below is their family line as I have so far researched it. I hope it gives you some of the answers you are looking for. I can give you further information about what William did, his brother (Thomas, my great great Grandfather) and their father William Joseph (went by the name Joseph), when they came to Australia etc. I have only yesterday discovered where William's grave is in Waverley cemetery (Joseph and Thomas are in our families vault) - next week I will photograph it and send you a copy. I have been unable thus far, to locate Matilda's grave although I do know it is in Waverley as well. I don't think the Coleman's were big on headstones.
Where do you live, is it possible to have a phone conversation? My number is: Australia, (02)95500770.
I would like to get in touch with my 'cousin', can you tell me how we are related. Also I would very much like to know any information about the Coads you have as well as what is your connection to Matilda?
cheers
Kate

Hi Kate
Oddly enough I have just been having some communications with a cousin of yours and talking about that shipping record. John is a bit of a mystery man but we think we know who he must have been. Unfortunately we think the line was "girled out" so no Coads left.
Matilda was the third child John and Elizabeth had of that name so I guess they really liked it. I have her marrying William Coleman, Sydney 1865.
Do you have more information about the marriage and any children? Please contact me on coad(a)one-name.com and I will give you what info I have.

Message Board Post:
Hello all
I have a Matilda Coad in my family and wish to reconnect her to her family. At the age of 9 she arrived in Sydney on 25 January 1855 - on the 'Rajasthan' from Liskeard, Cornwall. She arrived with her mother and father, John (42) and Elizabeth (41), sisters Mary A (19) Ellen (13) and brother John (11). Her father was a 'mason & plasterer' and his parents were Richard and Elizabeth. Her mothers parent were Thomas and Amie Willis (??? shipping document not clear).
She was my great, great, great Uncle's (William Coleman) wife.
Returning family to family
regards Kate
