Beginning March 2nd, 2020 the Mailing Lists functionality on RootsWeb will be discontinued. Users will no longer be able to send outgoing emails or accept incoming emails. Additionally, administration tools will no longer be available to list administrators and mailing lists will be put into an archival state.
Administrators may save the emails in their list prior to March 2nd. After that, mailing list archives will remain available and searchable on RootsWeb
Once again - sure I agree. As an academic I support proper verifiable
documentation. However - the advent of decent online reference sources has
greatly changed the way things need to be done - and their availability is
the only reason I was able to embark on this wide ranging study.
Its just a case of sitting down for about two months and putting in direct
references to four online databases, three of which are free. I chose from
the beginning to work almost entirely online and leave any paper
verification to family historians - its the only way to divide up the work
and make it feasible. I usually encourage family historians to do this -
though like me mostly they want someone else to do it!
A reason why I dont use microfiche/film (except in the CRO) is that in my
opinion they are an outdated technology and the facilities for viewing them
are so poor. Because I get motion sickness, trying to use them makes me very
ill. If anyone does a lookup for me, I usually give credit.
In a number of cases images of the original documents are online - Ancestry
census in particular where I have submitted hundreds of corrections. The BMD
indexes are also on Ancestry for anyone to view and I have submitted a few
corrections there too.
Familysearch/LDS has started putting up images of parish records at last, in
Cornwall anyway, though quite a few are unreadable. a2a is the hard one -
hunting out all those ancient land records would be a very big job.

Sure Russ you are quite correct.
The sources are generic - unless otherwise stated they are familysearch or
freebmd or ancestry census or a2a and it is obvious which is which. They can
all be found in a few seconds online. Where I have used other sources, I
hope they are always cited.
Occasionally I have thought of hiring a research assistant to put in the
full references to the four online sources above as it is painfully tedious
to do it on so many thousand references.
While I have always accredited family histories, I am a bit reluctant to
give full email addresses etc because of the spam robot problem. If someone
thinks I havent given them proper credit - please get back to me

Dr. Joe,
I am assuming Russ is addressing you in particular in this message. Russ
makes a good point.
Nigel and I have a possible cousin, and he was given his Coad family
genealogy from his Aunt. He said, that she said, she had hired a
professional genealogist, but there were no sources and no documentation.
There is no way we can verify the truth of the matter.
As for the Coads of Looe both Nigel and I have sources on all our key
ancestors, together with DNA test linking us together, and we have provide
same to Joe. I would hope that many of our Coad/Coode contributors to the
Coad database have recorded their sources and provide same to you through
their gedcom files. If not, here is their chance to provide you with them.
Just my two cents.

Joe,
I'll certainly make an effort to catch up with you in Melbourne in the not
too distant future. The weekly visits have now come to an end, but I'll be
heading over there for a couple of days each month for the next year or so.

Gday Joe,
Can you tell me where to send the photo and I think I have a copy of
the group photo you referred to if you want a copy.
I can give you Ann's obituary as well
I don't have a lot on that generation but can give a little info when you
let me know where to send the pic.
The pic of Ann on her own is also in her more senior years.
The group photo was taken prior to 1915 as the oldest son died that year.
I did have contact with another John Coad who was related through Ann's
brother John who also came out to Australia but I know little of this
branch.
Its been a long time since I have heard from him but I have an old Email
address that might be active.
Regards
Trevor

Yep, Trevor, I want to do an article in the book on the pioneers and pioneer

notable in that the family stayed around the Liskeard area from probably

Have any interesting stories come down from the pioneer days? I have managed
to score a number of reminiscences from my ancestors of the same period.
I think I may already have seen a picture of Ann Whitlock as a very old lady
in a group, but cant locate it so would appreciate it again. Says here she
died at 98.
By the way, are there any Coad cousins still around? I haver a William Frank
Coad 1915-1969 living very close to me in Albert Park, and his brother
George Lewis Coad 1917-72. Did they have offspring?
Cheers
Joe

during WW2. He had been given a spell from his previous operational

4. GEORGE3 COAD (William2, George1) was born in 1848 in Linkinhorne,

DAVIS on 30 May 1872 in Parish Church, St Ive Cornwall, England, daughter of
Richard Davis and Mary Ann. She was born about 1851 in St Tudy, Cornwall,
England.
Notes for George Coad:
George was a tin miner at Caradon Mine, Pensilva, Cornwall, England.
In the 1860s (date ?) he is reputed to have gone to California, USA, to
search for gold. However, like many others of the time, he returned home
penniless. Apart from stories passed down the family line, there is, as yet
(Nov. 2006), no confirmation of the gold search adventure. However, research
by other COAD families show evidence of migration to the USA in the latter
half of the 19th Century.
He resumed tin mining at the Caradon mine, but later developed silicosis and
had to leave the mining industry for medical reasons.
Later, he became a stone mason and helped build the Outer Harbour at
Mevagissey, in Cornwall.

appears that James Henry COAD left Southampton on the US steamship 'St.

Joe,
Do you need any photos from the Maryland-Nashville line?
And did you get the family history stuff I sent, from Uncle Joe?

Ive reached the point where I am ready to do the book, which will be called,
unsurprisingly, "Unravelling the CODE: The West Country COADs and COODEs"
which I'll vanity publish and you can eventually buy off the internet. Net
proceeds if any will go to finishing off the DNA study.
My elderly auntie just gave me a treasure trove of family photos dating back
to my g3gparents. If anyone else has old COAD etc photographs I'd greatly
appreciate a scanned copy I can use.
Best

Hm well it wont be a free copy of the book Russ, I will have to pay for it.
These online vanity operations print only the copies you pay for.
I can promise that anyone who provides usable photos will get the book at
cost (ie no markup).
Anyway lets wait till Ive actually written it!
Joe
