Beginning March 2nd, 2020 the Mailing Lists functionality on RootsWeb will be discontinued. Users will no longer be able to send outgoing emails or accept incoming emails. Additionally, administration tools will no longer be available to list administrators and mailing lists will be put into an archival state.
Administrators may save the emails in their list prior to March 2nd. After that, mailing list archives will remain available and searchable on RootsWeb
Thats very interesting and a nice job by the cousin, Maxine. The human race
is mixed around a lot more than people think.
Most of our Irish Coads/Codds that have taken the test are E1b1b (formerly
known as E3b), which is often considered to be North African/Moorish -
though in this case the subclade is probably Albanian/Thracian. This was a
shock to them at first. But in fact about 1% of the British are in this
haplogroup, and higher in areas where Romans had forts. Bird (2007)
attributes the overall presence to settlement during the 1st through 4th
centuries CE by Roman soldiers from the Balkan peninsula.
A single Moorish ancestor even 300 years ago will probably not have any
impact on complexion. But you never know. (Note that 365AD is actually
pre-Islamic.)

Hi Joe,
I have been "following" your wonderful efforts to link the family branches.
In your email you mention the "miner COADS from Truro". My GGMother was
Ellen Williams Coad from Kenwyn Parish. GGGFather: Arthur - GGGGFather:
Thomas b St Ewe m Margaret/Marjory Jenkyn 1815.
I haven't been able to link in with your tree.
Perhaps you might have an idea to help?
Many Thanks
Doug Luke

Dear Joe:
While you have stated that the DNA test for the Coads was a success, you do
not say just what the Haplogroup was. I am curious how it differs from
myself for example. My male line descends for all of the generations that
can be researched in Aberdeenshire, Scotland.
I have been assigned to R1b1b2a1a. I was tested for 67 loci and to date I
have been found to have only one match at 25 loci, a fellow with a German
surname. Our common ancestor must be a long way back.
How does this compare with the Coads of Cornwall?

The test from the Coodes of Nashville is now in and it is a match for our ancient CODEs of Cornwall.
It is not what is at the top of "Visitations of Cornwall", but the alternative of three brothers from Lansallos who became the Nashville COODEs, the St Austell COODEs, and the North Hill/St Ive Coads is now pretty much established. An extraordinary family. The main old line of miner COADs from Truro are also cousins.
I officially declare this exercise a success!
If you belong to a branch of the Cornish COADs that has not yet been tested (and there are still quite a few) I strongly suggest you join in, locate a male COAD relative, and find out who your ancestors were.

HI Margaret. Its been a couple of years I think, can you remind me who your

Depending on who they are, I can recommend a cheap or a better option.

Margaret:
There is no need for both brothers to have their YDNA tested. The results
would be identical, one of the two will do and the cost is not
inconsiderable even with Joe Flood's help.
I am, unfortunately, descended from a Coad daughter, not a direct male line
and cannot help in the study.

Dear Joe Flood,
Please write to me directly. I've a few questions about the DNA testing.
I'm trying to get my brothers to participate. But, I need more info to give
them.
Thanks,

For some time we have been aware that the name COAD did not exist in Cornwall or Devon prior to 1600. Before that time, everyone was known as CODE or COOD(E). We had eight separate old families between whom we could not establish a relationship. Slowly we pieced together some hypotheses using old wills and the hand-typed book "Families of Stithians"
Our first major breakthrough was when we found using DNA that the Looe and Crowan Coads were related. This was not entirely surprising as both small families were skilled tradesmen and miners with some education, and fond of the name Samuel.
But because of the absence of volunteers for testing, we were unable to make progress with the larger families. That has now changed with the receipt of our sixth Cornish sample. We have discovered the original CODEs of Cornwall, who stretch right back to 1300 and are one of the 20 oldest families.
Some time ago Nigel Coad obtained an old will of William CODE of Trevagithicke Lansallos 1606. This showed five sons John, William, Thomas, Edward, and Stephen. We now know that from John descended the colourful Gov John Coode of Maryland and his descendants, from Edward descended the eminent COODEs of St Austell, and from Stephen - the North Hill and the ST Ive/Liskeard COADs. This is not surprising as all three families were gentlemen farmers, merchants and professionals.
What is more surprising is that we have discovered the main line of Truro mining COADs are also relatives. We believed they were descended from a Walter Reed or Cood who was mentioned in the wills of Luke Cood of Stithians and his son John as a full member of the family. And we knew that Luke was a grandson of John Code~1520/Blanche of Menheniot. It now seems that this man was an uncle of William of Lansallos, from a poorer side of the family, and that Walter Reed was truly a son of Luke.
The Looe/Crowan Coads are not related with this larger older grouping down the male line, but because of their very close proximity for centuries, it seems very likely there is a family relationship, possibly through an illegitimate birth or adoption.
Therefore we have now tied over half of the Coads and Coodes of Cornwall together. The rest still await DNA volunteers before we will know their origins. We need many more male Coads to test in order to flesh out these major discoveries and complete the survey.
