Lol Bob
This particular spelling was originally adopted in the 1600s because it is wsiwyg - you cant pronounce it wrong. Trust the Americans.
Any descendant of the Cornish CODEs - which includes the St Austell and Nashville COODEs - pronounces their name exactly that way - CODE - and always have, since 1350.
COODEs who derive their name from other surnames such as CUDE pronounce their name differently.
Irish COADs whose name is derived from CODD also say CODE.
I never heard of anyone using two syllables

How many syllables are in the Coad name?
Do you, too, suffer from mispronunciations of our simple handle? I once told a man that my name was "Coad, like road and toad." The next time I saw him he said, "You're Mr. Frog, right?"
Do only American Coads suffer so? Did we get the name wrong crossing the pond? Can Aussie's pronounce it any better? Do Coade, Code, and Coode sound the same?
