Thanks to efforts of two people on this Board, we have managed to pull together two separate pieces of work - always gratifying.
Ive talked about Edward Coad of Edwards County before, here and in my blog. In particular, how a phony family tree has been spread around which dates apparently from the 1880s. The reason for this has finally emerged.
Barbara Wilson has sent me "Genealogy of the Coads and their descendants" - I am not sure of the source of this typed document. While it is far from reliable, it does contain some interesting information which appears to be true.
It is obvious from looking at the children that Edward Coad is the one who married Jane Best St Stephens 1806 and had five children there. But which Edward is that? There were three cousins Edward Coad born 1778-1780 in St Stephens. By elimination I have presumed that it was Edward the son of Thomas Coad/Ann Hockey who married Jane.
But there is another cousin Edward, Edward Coad Cundy 1775, the illegitimate son of the serial ladies man Edward Coad 1746 of St Erme, who married three times, had eight children by different women, and was charged with fornication with Alice Cundy, the result of which was baby Edward. The will of Edward Sr in 1823 reads, after giving everything to his son George and sundry other descendants
"I also give unto and amongst my three daughters, Grace, Catherine, and Eliza, the cow called Jersey to be kept by them for their profit and I will and direct that they my three daughters shall have the use and profits arising from the same for their own benefit as long as they remain single and unmarried or as long as they or either of them continue to dwell on the Estate of Highway .... I give unto my son Edward Coad all my wearing apparel."
Now why the eldest son Edward should receive nothing but a couple of hand-me-downs initially made little sense. But now it is clear that he had been in Illinois since 1810, and he was illegitimate.
Illegitimacy was a considerable social handicap in those days, an dit is not too surprising that "Old Neddy" of Edwards County was not too forthcoming about his background - especially as he had personally been hit by a filiation order from his wife Jane, three years before they actually married.
It appears that when Neddy's son James went in search of information about the family in England before 1880; records not being too well kept in those days; he came up with a lot of incorrect or bogus information (not too different to some modern worldconnect posters) and his father did nothing to set him straight.
Edward jr had been the first to emigrate in 1812, but we have also seen here that his aunt Mary Heayn emigrated to Edwards in 1820 with her son and grandson. Edward jr's sister Jane Pearse and brother George Coad also made their way to Virginia in 1821, then to Illinois and Indiana.
And what of the other Edward, son of Thomas? Seems he was the carpenter who went to Maine in 1806 and is listed as the second Coad to arrive in the New World. I have recently been contacted by descendants of his half brother John Job Coad, who were one of the most successful Coad families.

If you have a Coad(e)/Coode relative who has been reluctant to take a DNA test becaue of the cost, we have a great offer for you.
Sorensons DNA labs are offering free test kits which match our Coad Project on the first 25 markers. This is not ideal, as we then dont own the samples and cant order any upgrades etc as they become available - but it's a lot better than nothing. You can get the kits at:
http://www.smgf.org/pages/request_kit.jspx
Because the Coads etc are so ancient and convoluted, the only way we are going to work out who is who is if each branch of the family takes a test. So I strongly urge you to ask that recalcitrant relative to give it a go. Please let me know if you succeed, and make sure the pedigree is submitted, otherwise we'll never be able to find him.
Contact me if you have questions.
