3 Brothers, sons of John COAD and Jane JEFFREY. I had not been aware of this
Gold mining trip- seems they were back in Iowa in 1855 as two of them got
married in Iowa in 1855. Interesting !!

Rush, 1850
Ever heard anything about this, folks? The Ermington Coads were rarely
anything but farmers, but looks like they got the mining bug. Ive been
wondering why I couldnt find any of them in the 1850 Census.

Joe,
I have a article from the Burlington, IA Hawkeye newpaper showing that
Edward, John and Henry Coad were on the Flint River Comapnay's wagon train
to the CA gold fields in 1850. My great great grandfather, Samuel T. Saint
was also on this trip. Samuel Saint and the Husteds came back via the
Isthmus of Panama and New York according to a biographical sketch of Ehpraim
Husted in one of the Des Moines Co., IA history books. Ephriam was Samuel
Saint's wife's (Hannah Husted) uncle and William Husted was Hannah Husted
brother.
I am hoping to write a newsletter(s) on this if I can get enough
information. Did you ever hear of these Coad's going to CA? I am looking
for stories to fill in the gaps of knowledge. Below is what I know.

Friend Edwards:--The company to which I belong, reside mostly in Des Moines
County, and for the information of their friends, have decided to have the
names of the members published in the Burlington papers. We cross the river
to day.—Every man , woman and child are in good health, and our teams look
reasonably well. Nothing of importance here in the way of news—about as many
teams arriving daily as are leaving. Corn is worth $2 per bushel—supplies of
ery kind hae run up enormously high—flour is now selling at $12 per bbl. And
side meat at 10 cts. Per lb. Up to this time but very little has been
received by the river, expecting what has been shipped by emigrants for
their own consumption. The early emigrants bought things at a reasonable
rae, corn at 20 cts, and bacon at 6 1-4.
The name of the company is "Flint River," and the following are the name of
the officers and men:

Arrival of Californians.—Some fifteen or twenty Californians landed here
yesterday from the Dr. Franklin, No. 2. Among those who belong to this

passage for the head of Flint soon after their arrival in Kealer’s Omnibus,
led off by his four beautiful creamers.

may be mentioned Col. John S. David, Col. D J. Sales, Messrs. John Progh,
