Ive received the following message from Ms Kirby in South Africa about a member of the Francis line" of Truro miners (I call it that because there were five Francises in a row). At the moment I have the line located in "Lizardcoads" but this is debatable.
Ed Man and I have been seeking live Coads in the line for a while - we never thought they might be in South Africa!
Does anyone know anything about this family? Charles seems to have sneaked between the Census, and I cant find his father Francis after 1851 either.

Hi Joe,
I am researching our family and have just come across your WorldConnect Coads project.
My problem is that "our" Charles Coad is a total thumb-suck because:
All I know is that he married a Ellen Trengove in 1884 in Nevada City and he was 27.[ so by default he was born in c1857 and that can only be one year "out".] I am sure that he was Cornish and prabably a miner. They had three children a daughter, and then twin sons.
I have access to ancestry.com and the only Charles Coad that fits my tags is a Charles Coad that you have in your lineage.
I picked up "our" Charles in the following
1851 UK census father Francis [29] mother Elizabeth [28] Francis [6] Christopher [3] John [1mth]
1861 UK census Mother Elizabeth [39] Francis [16] Christopher [14] John [13* but this corrects itself in the next census] Elizth [7] and our Charles [5]. Father Francis is "missing" and there is a death of a Francis Coad in the 3rd quarter and the registration dist is Truro.
1871 UK census Only Elizabeth John [20] Charles [14] and Elizabeth [16]
and he does not appear again in any UK census.
He also does not feature on the 1880 US census and there was no US census in 1890 and by 1900 I think they were already in South Africa.[These dates are quite hazy because we know that Ellen died in Cape Town and she was about 35- so this would add up as she was born in 1865.]
His sons were called Charles and Frank- but my mother spoke of Uncle Charlie and Uncle Frank so the Frank would probably have been Frances/Francis. They did not show much originality in nameing their offspring- and this line is seething with Frances and Charles.
John and Christopher went to Montana as miners so it probably followed that their little brother left as well.
I also notice that your very fine work does not say anything about Charles- so this might be the "BINGO"
The other line I took was the twin tag. Another brother, Francis had a set of twins, that lived!
I notice that you do not have any info on Charles other than birth and that he was present at his fathers death but nothing to say where he moved on to
Have you any other info on this man?
Regards
Bev Kirby-Durban -South Africa
Sorry, having re-examined the case I believe it was Stephen Coad senior the
doctors were examining, 6 days after his recapture, and not his son. It's
pretty bad when the guy is locked up for five years, escapes and manages to
stay on the run, and then when they catch him two doctors say he is OK.
Stephen Coad's 1869-70 court case about the bullock was also quite a circus.
Apparently Hunt left a bullock with Coad for years and Coad didnt want to
give it up, although the bullock had run wild. So Hunt gets a court order
for Coad to "deliver" the bullock or pay 15 pounds + costs, Coad pays costs,
asks what "deliver" means and he is told.
Hunt travels 20 miles across country with his bullock team to pick up the
beast, and Coad shows it to him standing in the paddock, obviously wild.
Neither man wants to rope it. Coad says he'll chase it out on the road, Hunt
says he wants it in the stockyard. Hunt leaves in disgust. Some months later
Hunt (who has said he's really only interested in the 15 pounds, not the
animal) turns up again with his bullocks, but the beast has run off to the
wild cattle. Hunt gets a local order, impounds Coad's cattle worth
considerably more than 15 pounds, and sells them. In 1869 Coad takes him to
court for the value and general damages.
The first jury simply cant agree on whether Coad "delivered" the animal,
despite being lectured extensively on the meaning of the word. They are kept
locked up overnight and eventually dismissed. Theres a second case the
following year where two of Coads children (not previously know, probably
born in USA) give evidence. The men settle when the jury is hung again.
Property law in NZ is subsequently adjusted.

Ed I have some of Ambrose Coads descendants
We can also add Ellen COAD b 1839 Looe M GeorgeDreadon 27 Aug 1879 Liskeard
Emigrated Louisa Nov 1874. Arrived NZ Mar 1865
I also have those if you need them
Let me know if you want the gedcom on either family
Not sure that Thomas COAD, b1820 emigrated 1851 Castle Eden, is attributable
to the Looe Coads
I dont have him down as one of mine but never managed to check him out
Depending on how desperate you are I could get his marriage cert

Thanks muchly David, the Marriage index and burials info are great resources. It shows how much you can do without birth records - The NZ Coads are now pretty much laid out.
I still have a few strays if any of these ring a bell;
George Coad, fined for drunkeness Auckland 1873.
Mary Coad m Frank Coleman 13/2/1889 New Plymouth
William Thomas Coad b Auckland 1872 m Elizabeth 1899
Ernest John Coad b 1880 Christchurch, ship stoker, m Mary Forrester 1903 london
C O Coad is involved in Primitive Methodists around 1912
E A Coad 1888 NZ, returning from Sydney 1919
H E Coad soldier, returns 1917.
Isabella Bella Coad 1904-1989 Auckland, m Herbert Roy Finlay
and who is Conal Coad the bass opera singer?
John Coad 1852 and Mary Ann Denby moved to Victoria by 1889. I am puzzling who the following older couple are.
John Coad, mrs M and Mary ann arr Auckland Tyburnia Oct 3 1863.
============================
The newspaper site you showed me at http://paperspast.natlib.govt.nz/ is great, have to love these old articles. Heres an example of the international news, 21 Sep 1874 Southern Cross Auckland.
"An accident of a very painful and serious nature occurred recently at St. Arnauds to a man named Richard Coad, while playing cricket. Coad had located himself before the stumps for the purpose of catching the ball, but in doing so it hit him mainly on the thumb of the left hand, and completely smashed it back, leaviug the bone protruding a quarter of an inch through the flesh."
Theres a long tale of a seminal court case involving a bullock, Stephen Coad, his neighbour and a hung jury, which required changing NZs property laws. At last they settled it out of court.
The 1880s was not a good decade for James Hook Coad 1857 the brewer. After his father Ephraim died, his mother got a war pension and was given a licence to the Marsland hotel in 1862. Young James was sent to Scotland for his eduction and was working there for a bookseller in 1871. By 1881 he stood for council in Taranaki and lost. Then in 1884 he went bankrupt due to the collapse in the economy. After that the excise people seemed to have it in for him as he was tried several times for apparently trivial offences against the liquor act.
James Coad, manager of the brewery owned by Mr. James Mc'Lauchlan, at Waitara, was charged to-day with breaches of the Beer Duties Act, in having two bales of hops and certain beer on his premises in excess of what was entered in the books. Mr. Coad, a brewer at Waitara, was convicted in two cases ; one of neglecting to enter hops and beer in the proper books required by law, and the other for removing the Statutory books from the brewery.

Under Family 2A you have Mary Coad marrying John Hallam in 1878.
Mary Coad (born as Maria Coad at Joseph Street, Woolwich on 6 September
1845) is my great grandmother. She belongs with Family 3B the Looe Coads.
Her father was Thomas Coad born at Polperro on 17 September 1798, the son of
Thomas Coad and Jenny Barrett.
Maria and her sister Jane Barrett Coad (born 29 June 1834 at Camberwell)
sailed from Liverpool on board the Shackamaxon on 7 November 1860 and landed
at Melbourne, Australia on 29 January 1861. By the time her sister Jane
married Henry Searle on 9 August 1865 at the Cathedral Church of St James,
Melbourne she was using the name Mary instead of Maria.
She sailed from Melbourne on 13 June 1874 on board the Otago and landed at
Wellington, NZ. She sailed as a Nurse accompanying the Tolhurst family. On
29 May 1878 she married John Hallam at St Mark's, Wellington. Daughters
Annie Lucy (known as Lucy) and Mary Jane (known as Jean - my grandmother)
were born on 12 April 1879 at Greytown and 25 November 1880 at Morrison's
Bush.
Lucy married Charles Daniel Chant at St John the Evangelist, Omata near New
Plymouth, on 25 October 1905 and died in childbirth on 3 August 1906 at
Omata. Her son Charles Hallam Chant born 3 August 1906 died on 6 June 1907
at Motueka. Jean married George Henry Duke (born 28 October 1884 at
Beauchieff, Sheffield, England) at St Mary's, New Plymouth on 5 June 1911
and their only child, my father George Alexander Duke, was born at New
Plymouth on 28 June 1912.
Jean died on 4 April 1959 at New Plymouth and George Duke Snr died on 11
June 1955 at New Plymouth.
My father married Ida Maisie Berridge (born 21 January 1919 at New Plymouth)
on 24 December 1942 at Hamilton. Children are Shirley Janice born 18 June
1946 at New Plymouth, Philip George born 5 May 1948 at New Plymouth
(myself), and Murray Robert born 18 October 1953 at New Plymouth. My father
died on 24 August 1965 at New Plymouth - my mother is still alive and lives
in the home established by John and Mary Hallam at Omata near New Plymouth
in 1889.
Thanks are due to Dr Nigel Coad for the identification of the date and place
of birth of my great grandmother and her emigration to Melbourne.
Philip Duke

Joe:
Greetings.
I'm in the process of re-organizing / adding to the Coode research. I have decided to divide it into two distinct parts.
The first is the Coode family beginning with COL John Coode 1648-1709 and his descendents. I am hoping to trace the family line through as many of his children as possible up to about the year 1800. There are a couple of lines that there is little information about, because records are lost, or the family moved to different states (colonies), and I am hesitant to accept some of the theories of where these people went. I think you know what I mean here. Nonetheless, I am putting together the Coode line with the sources, original will references etc. so that I can show with certitude the line from COL John Coode to about the year 1800.
The second line the the Coad line. That section does not require as much new research as the line from Joseph Coad,( c. 1765-c. 1823) the father of COL William Coad (1803-1868) is one I have done and I am absolutely sure of the information. I am hoping to go back two or three generations behind this Joseph Coad, and that may give me the first immigrant in the line to the US.
I have not forgotten the DNA issue with the Coode family in TN. My main contact with the family moves around a bit, and I am hoping to catch him on the phone rather than email.
Can you give me an idea of the costs of the DNA test, how it is done etc?
Ed Allan

Thanks for that information! My wife was amazed to find that she is the
cousin of the man who has owned and operated a small engine repair shop here
in Rockland, Maine for years. Small world!

Hi,
I was going through some American Revolutionary War muster rolls and found a William Coad who served with the 1st and 3rd New York Regiments from about 1779-1782.

I guess this is your grandpa
George S Coad sr, Born 2 jan 1929 died 4 Jun 1999 Cuyahoga. Living at various addresses in Cleveland with Freda K Coad b 1954.

Hi:
I am looking for connections to the Coad family of Maryland.
I have some of the early Coad line 1700, but a couple of the branches left
St. Mary's County MD early 1800. My Coad line is J. Edwin Coad of SMC who
married Mary Ann Allan in Balt, in 1877, then returned to SMC a few years
later.
Are your Coads from there?

Hi Nigel and Joe,
Just when it seems the mystery was solved!
I doubt that the John Coad who was a servant that came to New York on the
Henrietta is the same John Coad of Eastport, Maine who was a blacksmith.
>From census info and what is written on the back of the photograph of Mary
(Coad) Niles I still believe that John Coad of Eastport, Maine came here in
the 1820s, maybe through Passamaquoddy or some other entry point along the
Canadian border.
The vital records from Eastport state that John Coad was from Cornwall
County England born 1795 and that his wife was from Tyrone County Ireland.
Regards,
Andrew
Mathias Coad was born in Eastport, Maine, May 27, 1836 the son of John and
Mary Coad.
Previous to the war of the Rebellion he attended one course of lectures at
Long Island College Hospital.
He enlisted in the army in 1862 and served as assistant surgeon of the
Fifty-Second Massachusetts Infantry for nine months in Louisiana , and
subsequently with the Seventy-Sixth United States Colored Infantry in
Louisiana, and was mustered out in 1866.
After the war he attended two courses of lectures at Long Island College
Hospital and one at Pittsfield, Mass. He graduated from Berkshire Medical
College, at Pittsfield, Mass., about 1866. He studied medicine with Dr. Mark
R. Woodbury.
He commenced practice at Fentonville, Michigan, in May, 1866, and in 1868
removed to Williamstown.
In politics he was a member of the People's Party. He was a Republican
candidate for Representative in 1870; was President of the Village, and
member of the Board of Education; was elected to the house of 1897-8 on the
Democratic People's Union Silver ticket.
He and his wife Alice had at least two children, Grace and Kate. He died
October 09, 1924 at Lansing, Michigan.

Hi Joe -
I am missing possibly the Robert born 1722 - we had assumed (and perhaps
wrongly) that Robert 1701 had two wives, Jane and Avis. Jane and Robert had
a daughter Avis - unless this info is wrong too - when have a moment will
check out your listing again on devoncoads.
Robert seems to be the name of choice back then - I wonder if there is a
Robert COAD, or Code born around 1670 or later that might tie in on this
line. They seem to get married at younger ages.
And yes Dennis is a closer relative than I to Duane

Beth Coad

No problem, thanks for checking that out
This could be a case of right man wrong boat in that in John Coad we have a
man of the right age, name and occupation who called his son Joseph. No
clear linkage to John Coad b 1795 Talland, twin to Joseph, but all very
supportive. There are only a very limited number of other candidates on the
IGI who are all a few years out of age range.
Im still keen on this one

Hi:
My Coads are from MD 1700 and on.
Are any of your people from there?
We are also trying to trace through to England. Joe Flood has done
tremendous work in that area. He has pilled a lot of us together, although
we all (particularly me) still have a lot of outstanding work in order to
tie it all in.
