I have posted the DRAFT version of the Coad one-name study onto rootsweb in the hope that family researchers will be able to confirm or disprove the links it shows. It contains trees which I believe to be the most likely given the information I have. If someone has better information - I will immediately change the trees (and I do so a couple of times a month at present).
I have been rather reluctant in particular to post the tree of the "Elder" Codes or Coodes of Morval. What IS known is that they were very rich landowners and clergy who had royal connections down the female line.
What is NOT known for sure is whether they had any male descendants. In fact - I believe I am the first person to say they probably did, in the form of:
a) the North Hill; Liskeard/St Ives Coads, and Ohio Coads, probably descended from Stephen Code.
b) various Coads in central Cornwall descended from Rev Gilbert Code
c) various Coads in West Devon descended from his brother Rev Arthur Code
d) the Coodes of St Austell
One of the main purposes of the DNA study is to see if these lines are related or not - since the proof on paper is ambiguous.
So - before everyone starts claiming descent from Edward Longshanks, Empress Matilda and Charlemagne - be aware that a lot of work needs to be done to prove this, and that you can help in several ways.
- by getting more participants for the DNA study
- by improving the proof for the various links in the paper one name study.
Best of luck!
Joe Flood

As several of you clearly have information about descendants of William Coad and Agnes Frazer, can you please send it to me as I would like to fill out this line.
For example - I have no marriage date for Grace Collings Coad, nor much information as to what happened to any of her siblings apart from James Frazer Coad.
I would particularly like to know of any living COADs in this line.

Dear Joe,
Where do I find the link to the Coad one-name study?
Many thanks.

Hi Marlene,
Yes I have seen the work done by Joe Flood and it is very impressive. I have also seen some other stuff that (supposedly) takes this line as far back as William the Conquerer. Not sure I believe that but it was kind of interesting. I would be very interested to see the info you have. I think the family groups by email would be best but please do whatever is easiest for you. I am hopeful that one of us will find a connection sooner or later. I also have information that I would like to share with you but right now it is stuck in the hard drive of a dead computer. When we get a new one, hopefully soon, I will try to retrieve it and send it to you. Right now we are using my daughter's laptop but I don't want to put too much on it as she uses it for University. Thanks again for the reply.
Cheers,
Jim

Hi Jim, good to hear from you. RootsWeb.com has a family tree contributed by joeflood(a)bigpond.com. It is called "Elder" Codes and Coads of Cornwall. Your John and his ancestors/descendants are listed. I think you'll find it quite amazing to see how the line goes back to the 1300s. Unfortunately, Joe was not conclusive either as to whether my Walter was John's brother, but we're going to work on it. The information I have on the descendents of Walter and Grace is quite large, more than on Joe's tree. It would be easier to send you either a gedcom file or family groups via email. Let me know which you would prefer.
Cheers for now
Marlene

Hi Marlene,
Thanks for the reply to my posting. It has been quite a while since I did any research on this but I know I didn't have any definitive proof of much of anything. The connection was from the familysearch.org (Latter Day Saints) website and from census information from different sites on the web. The only thing I know for sure was my great grandmother was Ann Coad (daughter of John). It did certainly appear that your Walter was John's brother but I have no proof. I picked up on this interest quite by accident and I'm afraid I am not dedicated enough to pursue much beyond the level of it being kind of a hobby. I would definetly appreciate seeing the other information you have on Walter and Grace on the chance one of us stumbles upon proof that they were actually brothers. Thanks again.
Cheers,
Jim

Walter and Grace (Collins/Collings) Coad are also my 3 x great grandparents. Unable to actually prove that Walter was the son of Peggy and Walter Coad. Baptisms are noted for other children John, Mary and Benjamin but no Walter. Do you have prove of the connection?
I have information on Walter and Grace that I am very willing to share.

Dear all
I agree with everything Alan says and Im glad weve been able to reach a mutually beneficial outcome.
Another member of the same family as James, Denise Coode of Georgia, is investigating whether her husband would like to join and as she is alrerady interested in family history, this may be a good option.
Please be aware however that we are talking about a common ancestor 13 generations back, which cause some concern about "non-paternal events". If we use a typical 4% chance of this, then the chance of both lines being "good", by my calculation, is only 36% over that genetic "distance". Of course if we get a match - no problem, but we might get a false negative.
Ill reply in a little more detail when I return to Melbourne tomorrow.
Best wishes
Joe Flood

We would like to have confirmation that this branch, which I have expanded in detail are correctly connected to us. Our common ancestor was John Coode born 1554. HI Nigel
This is quite a historical pioneering family in Illinois. Im pretty sure this family are in fact the one from St Stephens (perfectly well documented) Ppl have come back to me to say none of the dates in Truro or Kenwyn exist - so someone in fact cooked the books for an entire family tree.
We are slowly starting to get a picture of the early Coads I think, helped a lot by DNA. Your guys did manage to escape from Looe early on, I now believe, and half the St Stephens Coads are yours - including, probably, this particular Edward. All will be revealed once we get enough DNA takers.

Joe and All,
I have been away and did not pick up your recent emails on the US Coodes (descendants of John Coode [1648] of Maryland) until today.
The facts and figures Edward Alan presents in his email are reasonable. My records show that Demetrius A. Gerard Coode born 1844 in St. Mary's County MD was part of "Mosby's Virginia Partisan Rangers. Organized September 19, 1864. The records of Company F show that Demetrius Coode was a private."
If you find that Jim Coode (Jr not Sr) wishes to joint the project (I do not believe that he is awash with money so you might wish to suggest that he could represent the Coodes with his sample of Y DNA and that he might wish to encourage others to agree to contribute to the fee - five relatives reduce it to a manageable amount), then I will talk to Charles Coode in Australia and see if he will represent us and we will become part of the project. This will be a constructive win-win use of Y DNA research. If anything else falls out of the data, then that will be nice, but I do not expect it.
Let me know what Jim (Jr) says.
If it proceeds as we would like it, then how would you propose that we transfer funds to you?
Best wishes, Alan Coode

Subject: [COAD] Descendants of Rev Col John Coode
Dear All
>From Linda's work we know that the only proven male line descendants of Col
John are in Nashville TN.
>From the1930 census, these are they:
1930 US Census. District 80, Nashville TN. John Coode (60, MD, Owner retail
grocery, $10000) and Margaret B (62) with Cornelia B (35) Charles D (23,
Asst manager, retail grocery) Mary L (20)
1930 US Census. Victor Coode (53, MD, Proprietor livery stable) and Ida Mai
(45, TN, typist) with Nell Arieta (19) Mary P (12). 1 servant
Oddlty fitting that the last descendant of one of the South's most colourful
characters shoudl end up owning a grocery store in the Country Music
Capital.
There are stll about 15 Coodes in the white pages for Nashville
http://www.switchboard.com/Whitepages/TN/Nashville/search.htm. In
particular, theres a Charles D Coode there who is almost certain to be a
descendant. 615) 269-9369 | 319 Greenway Ave Nashville, TN 37205
Does anyone want to take a punt on making one or several telephine calls to
see if what we believe to be the case is true? Explain we are seeking the
last descendants of Governor John and sk if his ggf was Demetrius Coode of
St Marys?

One of the first COADs to go to the New World was one Edward Coad ~1776 who went to Edwards County Illinois in 1817. The story is as follows
Migrating from Cornwall (reportedly Truro), England, the Coads were among Edwards County's earliest English settlers in 1817. The 1850 census indicates he was born about 1776-1777. Referred to as "Old Neddy Coad" in George Flower's HISTORY OF THE ENGLISH SETTLEMENT IN EDWARDS COUNTY ILLINOIS, Edward Coad died 1860-1870.
Undocumented reports indicate he was born Dec 5, 1776, Truro, Cornwall, England, the son of Edward and Elizabeth Ann (Logan) Coad of Truro and married Feb 20, 1776, Jane Taylor of Truro.
The source for much of this information is the book "Genealogy of the Coads : with a partial history of Cowles, Kelletts, Cowlings and others". by J Edward Coad ~1964. (I have not seen this book)
A tree for this Edward is on the IGI, showing him to be the son of Edward, born 1752 Epsom Surrey (son of James and Martha Coad), who married Elizabeth Ann Logan in Exeter 1776 and had a family in Truro
Now the trouble with this whole IGI tree is that it consists of sealings (records submitted since 1990) - there is not one extracted record. It is also peculiar, with people moving Cornwall-> London----> Exeter ---> Truro, very rare in those days; and with no apparent hard evidence. As time has gone on and other traces of this family have failed to appear, I have become quite suspicious.
Here are the key vital records
- Edward Coad Sr, b 1754 Epsom Surrey, James and Martha
- Edward Coad m Elizabeth Ann Logan 20/2/1776 Exeter
- Edward Coad ch 5/12/1776 Truro, Ed+Eliz Ann
- George Coad ch 14/01/1779 Truro, Ed+Eliz Ann
- Edward jr Coad m Jane Taylor 17/5/1799 Truro
- Ann Coad b 3/03/1802 Truro
- Mary Coad ch 8/9/1804 Truro
- Elizabeth Coad 20/05/1808 Truro
- Thomas Coad 1810
- Jane Coad 28/9/1814 Truro.
My request is - does anyone have access to Truro records and can confirm any of the above alleged baptisms/marriages?
These children look very much like the offspring of Edward Coad/Jane Best of St Stephens to me, rather than any Truro family. the order is correct and the dates are close.
