I havent really tried yet to sort out the Afro-American Coads and Codes -
but I have listing of them all from the 1900 census in case someone wants
to make sense of it. I dont really have access to the right records here,
but Ill be very interested to hear about any research.
Heres a few notes Im putting on the blog
=======================================
Today it's a distasteful part of American history, but it's probably better
to face it squarely. The Coodes and Coads of Maryland were slaveholders, as
Ed says, along with most other white farmers that could afford it. We know
how many slaves they had from the early Census. The slaves are usually
mentioned in the wills too and appear to be highly valued.
The original Coodes of Maryland ran their plantations using some or all
slave labour.
Ann Coad, daughter of Rev Col John, left 3 in her will. 1763.
By 1850 and 1860 the only family holding slaves were the Catholic
Coads of District 2 St Marys Co. They were generally regarded as decent,
devout and
upright people who performed a number of charitable works.
Joseph Coad, founder of the line 1777, owned 6 slaves in 1800.
Col William Coad 1850 25 slaves, 1860 8 slaves
(brother)George D Coad M.A. 1850 12 slaves 1860 15 slaves
(son) J Edwin Coad, 1850 32 slaves 1860 36 slaves
(son) William Coad jr 1860 36 slaves
(daughter) Cecelia Coad 1860 32 slaves
About two thirds of the slaves were children, almost all are described as
"black"" rather than "mulatto". They would all have been duly emancipated
in 1864 after the the Civil War which "made a mendicant" of J Edwin.
Some notes I have receved from Ed Allen read
Baltimore Sun on September 7, 1847, ad date: September 17th, 1847 reward:
$200.00 for Isaac, gender male, age: 38, caste: enslaved, date departed
September 6, 1847, destination free state, William Coad, Maryland, County:
St. Mary's County, Locale: Great Mills. Total group: Isaac Blackistone and
John Fenick.
Also appearing the the Baltimore Sun was a Runaway ad press date September
17, 1847, Ad Date: September 17, 1847, reward: $200.00 for John, gender
male, age 21, caste enslaved date departed September 6, 1847, destination
free state. William Coad Maryland, County: St. Mary's County, Locale, Great
Mills
"William, George, and Edwin Coad with the help of their slaves cleared the
ground and built the first portion of the church, which opened on January
28, 1855 and was known as St. George's."
=====================================================
The Coads of Maryland do NOT, however., appear to be the source of
Afro-American
Coads.
The situation with surnames in the South after emancipation is reminiscent
of Cornwall in the 1500s. The concept is unfamiliar, literacy is very
limited, and surnames are written largely at the whim of the scribe or
recording official. In these circumstances, surnames are not fixed and
change rapidly. Also there are many misprints and mistranscriptions in the
Ancestry Census.
There are no black Coads in the 1870 or 1880 census. There are however
about 70 Codes and "Mc Codes"; mostly from South Carolina. Three families of
COADs appear in the 1900 census. Searching back, two of the household heads
were CODEs in 1880, and prior to that, seem to be CADEs, which is a common
name in SC. The third was George Coad 1868 Georgia, who was the son of
Flander Code 1810, a SC slave. However there were no CODE slaveowners in SC
1850-1860, only CADEs, CUDDs and a de COTT. It seems likely that Flander
derived his name from one of these
It seems therefore that most Afro-American Coads have originated from
slaveholdings of the CADEs or perhaps the CUDDs of South Carolina.

What a truely awesome feat to put that lot together. Thanks so much
Two things:
I hadnt realised John Coad 1795 Taland had emigrated. Could you at some
point let me have the evidence.
I have some family photos from the US and have never been able to identify
them so maybe theres a clue here
John was the twin of Joseph who was one of my ancestors
Have you come across a Thomas Couch Coad b 1825 Looe- he is one of my strays

Great stuff! I too appreciate all the work. I'm a little late to the
party here... would it be appropriate to submit a few paragraphs about
the Coads of Ireland/Nebraska? Brothers John Francis and Mark Coad (from
Wexford & Waterford mid 1800s) became were very prominent frontier
cattlemen and bankers. Founders of Cheyenne Social Club, etc.

Joe - Great work and I'm sure appreciated by all us Coad descendents!
One point - In the section on my family line The Brannel Coads - you
mention Samuel Coad killing himself and his wife in December 1899 - it
was actually 27 November 1899.
Again, great work on our behalf.

Interesting, didnt know we had a family historian of this line, youve been
very quiet Kathy! Thanks for all the great BMD. In fact we do have pretty
much exactly the same except for one thing - the origin of Isaac.
Heres the 1851 Canadian census.
1851 Canada census. Isaac Coad (30, England, shoemaker, methodist) and Jane
(27, Canada) with Elizabeth Ann (5) William P (2)
Says hes English. I dont have an immigration record for Isaac, do you?
Thanks for the wifes name. Theres no marriage for them in Britain -seems
more likely they would marry in Canada..
I did see a note somewhere that Isaac was from Wales but dismissed it as
there have never of course been any Coads in Wales, apart from a few miners
who drifted up after the mine closures in the 1850s. I cant see any Isaac
Codd there either.
The only candidate I have is Isaac Coad 1813 of North Hill Cornwall.
1841 census. Bray Shop Linkinhorne. Elizabeth Coad (65) with Isaac (25, ag
lab).
Hes gone from Cornwall by 1851, However he's not a shoemaker so he might
still be the wrong one.
Do you have any evidence for this Welsh connection?
Joe

Yes Maxine is a North Hill Coad, they are easily the biggest family of Coads
in Australia with at least 250 Coad descendants. Eddy "roadbug" and I have
been doing a lot of work on the North Hill Coads in South Australia and
Victoria, and all the other South Australian Coad families, so we've got
that tree down fairly tight now for anyone who's interested. Its on

Hi Maxine,
Thanks for your email. I'm of the Australian branch of Coads who left Cornwall in 1839 and immigrated there so I am unsure if we are connected to Coads in USA. Perhaps someone else in the discussion group will know if you can somehow find the name of your Coad connection.
Good luck and best wishes!

Hello wanda,
I have just finished doing the northill coads. if you want to have actuall
copies of the registers, then go online to the cornwall record office and
download their document to order parish register copies, fill in the details,
sign it and post it off with the pre payment. You can pay by credit card and
stipulate not to go over a set ammount. They are pretty quick in replying. You
do not need to go to the record office itself.

Dear Eddy and others,
I am just wondering if you would know if there is a sure, quick way of accessing and purchasing copies of birth extracts from the parish records? Do you know if I would need to go to the records office in Truro or elsewhere? I am particularly interested in the following three;
1. John Dingle Coad born in 1834 in Tresibbit Altarnun , Cornwall,
England, christened on 28 Sep 1834 in Northill, Cornwall, England.
2. Nicholas Coad, son of Nicholas Coad and Susannah Aunger, was born on 21
Sep 1782 in Northill, Cornwall, England, was christened on 21 Nov 1782 in
Northill, Cornwall, England.
3. Sarah Jane Dingle, daughter of Richard Dingle and Jane
Carhart, born in 1789 in St Minver, Cornwall, England, was
christened on 28 Jun 1789 in St Minver, Cornwall, England.
I'm also interested in the marriage records for Nicholas and Sarah Jane (Dingle), would records for St Minver also be at the Truro office?
(Nicholas married Sarah Jane Dingle on 2 Nov 1813 in Northill, Cornwall, England. Only the marriage banns were at Northill, possible that the church ceremony took place at St Minver.)
Many thanks!
Wanda Coad

Wanda, there are two ways that I know for obtaining those kinds of records.
1) Check with the LDS International Genealogical Index http://www.familysearch.org/
The LDS records will narrow down your search and from there you can maybe order certificates from a link on Rootsweb.
2) Check the free BMD on Rootsweb.comhttp://www.rootsweb.com/
If you find a hit for the people you are looking for, there is a link that will take you to a site that you can order certificates online.

Joe:
I have been out of the net for a while, long story, a stress fracture, so
not as mobile as I would have liked.
I am in the process of catching up on email and again getting to the family
research - Remember I am doing three distinct families, Coad, Riesenberger
and Constantine, all related to the Allan line, so it is like throwing balls
in the air and catching them. Combine that with a family wedding (no, not
mine, a cousin) a sick dog basset, and five "children" ages 17-28 who are
spread all over from here at home to California.
I have looked at the 1900 census. I believe I have all the Coad families,
that is those headed by a Coad head of household, who are descendent from
COL William Coad, 1803-1868.
As you know from my research it is unfortunate that the Coad line from COL
William Coad, as far as the male line carrying the line seems to have died
out, although there are MANY through the females.
Correct me if I am wrong, DNA testing is only good through the male name
bearing Coads?

We have many on here from the USA. I have been looking at some US families lately and thought it was time to do in the US what has been done in Cornwall - namely to wade through the Census and reconstruct all the families. I chose the 1900 Census because it has the most useful information.
There were 579 COADs, CODEs and COODs that were not obvious typos in the USA 1900 . (Compares with 815 in England 1881, and 212 of English descent in Canada 1901). The gross breakdown was
- 183 Cornwall descent
- 183 Irish descent
- 84 Devon descent
- 16 Black
- 64 Other names (the Cudes, English Codds and Cudds, plus 5 foreigners)
- 49 Unknown (couldnt work them out)
This is a very different distribution to elsewhere. Devon Coads are extinct everywhere else, so far as I know. In Australia, Irish Coads are a few descendants of a single prison guard in Tasmania.
Its just amazing how such a large number of different families called CODD in Ireland would all change their name independently to COAD when they got to the New World. A few English Codds did it too.
Of the Cornwall Coads, the breakdown is:
- 70 Brannel
- 40 North Hill (includinng the Licking family)
- 25 Looe
- 11 Lizard
- 6 Coode
- 29 Truro miners (including the Pincombes and the Perrans)
This is fairly similar to Cornwall except that the miners and the Coodes are under-represented.
Once again,as in Australia, the distribution reflects the fact that the agricultural Cornish made a far larger population contribution than the miners.

I came back for another look and found these folks in 1870 and 1880 - Charles is in fact the son of Henry, he just doesnt know where his parents were born (and his parents arent too sure either).
1870 Census. Eudora Douglas Kansas. Harry Coad (29, Illinois) and Nancy M (19, IN) with Ida May (1, KS)
1880 US Census. Marshall Saline Missouri. Harry Coad (35, PA, day lab) and Nannie (30, Penn) with Ida (12) Chas (7) Ann (3) Emmett (0.1). Parents unknown
Henry Coad 1840-41 Illinois seems to be the most common description, with parents Virginia/Kentucky. The nearest I can find to this in 1850 and 1860 census is Henry Coad b 1845 PA, of Iowa. However he is an Ermington Coad and everyome agrees he married Catherine Lotspeich and moved to Montana.
Other possibilities - theres a Henry Coats 1838 Illinois, a Henry Cady 1840 Illinois, or he might be someone from the Edwards Illinois family.
Any ideas anyone?

Subject: Coads of Saline Missouri - help needed
Having become more or less au fait with the US families, I thought I would take a stab at reconstructing the families in the 1900 US census. Im about half done but have struck some problems, mostly due to constant name changes by the CUDEs and the Irish CODDs. Ive also run into two English Codds and a COARD who have changed to good old COAD.
Can anyone help me with the following two families from Saline Co Missouri?
---------------------------------------------------------------------
1900 US Census. Grand Pass, Saline MO. Charles B Code (03/1873 Kansas, farm lab, m 4 yrs , parents MO and IN) and Susie (1875 MO) with Eunice (1898 MO)
1910 US Census. Grand Pass, Saline MO. Charles B Coad (37, Kansas, farmer, m 14) and Susie A (34, MO) with Eunice (11) Florence (9) Charles B (9) Josie (2). All MO. Boarder John B Yates (38)
-------------------------------------------------------------------
1900 US Census. Clay Saline Missouri. Henry M Coad (1840 IL, day lab, parents VA, m 33 yrs) and Nancy (1857 Indiana, 8/6 children) with Ida May (1869 Kansas) James Ernest (1879 MO) Anna Maud (1882 MO) Della (1885 MO)
1910 US Census. Grand Pass, Saline MO. Harry M Coad (70 IL, m 41 yrs) and Nancy R (56, Indiana, 8/6 children) with Maude (27 MO) Della (25 MO)
------------------------------------------------------------
Problem is I cant find Charles B Code/Coad of Kansas, or Henry M Coad of Illinois/ Kansas in any earlier census
Can anyone help me with these?

I would spend some time looking around the Northill/Coads Green area up on
the moors. Have a look at the Cornwall registry Office in Truro and see some
of the old parish registers. If you have some time the National Trust houses
at Cothele Nr Calstock and Lanhydrock nr Bodmin are worth a visit and if you
still have time then some of the old coastal fishing villages Looe,
Polperro, Fowey are all nice but crowded in summer. If you like walking then
get away from the crowds by walking along the coastal path a bit. Dont
forget to have a pasty and cream tea also. Have a great time
