Having looked at this a bit more - quite a number of different CODD families changed their name to Code or Coad or Cood when they arrived in the New World or England. This probably has less to do with politics than pronunciation.
As far as I can tell Codd was pronounced with the long European "o", somewhere between Cord and Coad and Cood. That's not what the English were calling them and as pronunciation was so much more important than spelling back then - they tended to go for the nearest local variation. Which in Lancashire/London was CODE and in the New World where there were so many Cornish immigrants - COAD.
Whats so surprising is that they then stuck to the new spelling religiously.

Nice work, I have updated the St Stephens Coads to reflect this.
It would probably be also worth checking out the will of Edward Coad sr. I have only a precis from http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~sterth/wills1793_97.htm#Ecoad
written - 16-May 1785
proved - 12-Oct 1793
pages - 135/136
sons - Jonathan, James, Edward, William, Thomas
daughter - Ann, Mary
witnesses - Philip Bond, Jno Courtenay
I also have another Johanna Hean m John Coad 13/5/1845 Truro Clements- but as this Johanna was from Liskeard they are probaly not imediate family.
By the way, have you found anything on James Hean sr?

I just wanted to update my previous posts as I've found new information which appears to identify my ancestor, Mary (Coad) Heayn, as a daughter of Edward Coad and Grace Bullon of St. Stephen's. John Heayn left a will written in 1804 and probated in 1809 under the name John "Hayne" (he was apparently illiterate) in which he appoints Edward "Code" of the parish of Ladock, yeoman, as the guardian and trustee of John's son, James, if John's wife, Mary, should remarry. This Edward is identified in pedigrees as a son of Edward Coad and Grace Bullon. Given that they had a daughter named Mary born before 15 June 1753 which matches what information I have on Mary (Coad) Heayn I believe this is a rather good indication that Mary daughter of Edward is the same as Mary who married John Heayn.

The entire Hundred of East is missing from Ancestry's 1841 census. I have complained to them but they seem unwilling to fix the situation. You need to go to the Freecen project or Cornwall Online Census Project.

I am sure that Lucito Coad (Otter) married Tinsley West in the USA. Not sure of the state most likely KY. Tinsley was one of 13 children born to Samuel West and Lydia White. I think Tinsleys DOB is 1808 in Estill County, KY. I know Tinsley married Eliza Woods on 12-11-1829 Location unknown.
Thanks

Just spotted your query. Approximate dates, country, city or town would like in search.
Still looking for takers for the six discount gift certificates for anyone wanting to join the Coad DNA project. If I dont get enough COADs by the end of next week, Ill consider giving them to people with other surnames.
Cheers and Merry Christmas

Do we have any approximate dates or places on these events so that I can put them into a tree? I need to know if we are talking about 1600s or 1800s.
Id say there is a fair chance this line is Irish, being catholic and looking at the names.

I have just uploaded the 5th family of Coads - from St Kevern and Lizard. Header reads:
This gedcom begins with three men John , Thomas and Hugh Coode or Coade, probably brothers, who arrived in St Keverne about 1630.
It is not clear where they came from. There is some evidence that Hugh returned to Devon after the death of his brothers and they may have been from there.
Every subsequent Coad in Lizard (and quite a few miners from Helston and Kea) is descended from Thomas. Several branches of the family went to South Australia and California.
