We have two references to William Coode, that when taken together paint an interesting picture. The last record I have of William Coad/Coode, son of John and Susanna, in Maryland, is in 1723: -12/6/1723: Deed from William Coode of SMC, Gent. to John Brown of CC, planter pt. of "Thomas' Choice", 100 ac. (CC Liber L, #2).
There appears to be a connection between Joseph Allen and William Coode. If William Coode passed away in 1723 why bother to list him 20 years later?----(1743) MARYLAND CALENDAR OF WILLS: Volume 5

Thought I would post this family line, as I am getting one of the living male Coad's to do the DNA test. Hope we can link this family to others. They did come from the North Hill, South Hill, Calstock area and I have been there and have pictures of Coad tombstones from the area. John Herring Coad and family came to America and I am a great great grandson of his.
Will be interesting to see if other Coad families are connected by DNA testing.
I start with what William Coad, who I believe is the son of William Coad also but do not have positive connections that are older, any help would be appreciated.

Joe,
To have graves placed adjacent to each other is a significant indicator of some kind of close relationship. Perhaps the following four documents may assist you to further unravel those local mysteries.
It's quite a coincidence that two of us from Australia have separately photographed those same stones.
Cheers,
Peter
Gday Peter,
I have also visited St Ive as the Coads living there are from
my lot.
I think I have the photos of all the Coad Headstones at St Ive but would
like a copy of yours incase I missed one.
Also the photos of the other documents would be appreciated.
I have photos of Lower Chariton farm where my Coads at St Ive or Pensilva
lived some of which are on the parish clerks site for the area but if you
would like what I have you are welcome.
If anyone else on the list are interested please ask me for copies.
Regards
Trevor Whitlock

Its great to get a sunny day and those really good photos of the stones Peter. I wish Id stopped in on my way to Menheniot in April.
Oddly enough I have just been independently contacted by a John Coad in Victoria who appears to be the eighth of that name in a line. He also has photographed the stones.
These stones have thrown a bit of a spanner in the works. Now I have always thought that John Coad m ( 1799 St germans) Grace Lean was the son of Richard Coad and Mary Crocker, bp 1766 St Cleer. In that case why is he buried next to his uncle John (who married Jane Mutton in Menheniot 1756) in St Ive, when as far as I know he died in St Germans, quite a distance away.
1841 Census. Higher Eglaroos, St Germans. John (70, farmer) with Grace (35). Thomas Lean (65, Graces father). William Lean (30, farmer) with William (8). 2 ag labs 2 servants
John jr (m Priscilla Rogers) in fact seems to have inherited Charaton (at least he was there in 1841) but there were plenty of other intervening male relatives if the above is true. Why would a great-nephew score it?
Perhaps John 1728 (Richard's eldest brother) and Jane did have some issue after all and the other two Johns were his descendants? That would certainly seem to be indicated by the proximity of the stones.

Glad it was of interest Joe.
As reported in that message I took photographs of Coad graves in a couple of locations whilst in Cornwall recently. One such place was St Ive (not St Ives and pronounced 'St Eve' by the locals).
I've attached images of four separate tomb stones, the inscriptions on which may be of interest to the wider Coad group.
Also, whilst in the village, I was allowed to photograph a few documents by a really obliging local historian. One of those was a mud-map of farms (at least one was owned by a Coad family) in the area sometime in the 1700s. I've tried to orientate the document with another modern OS topographic map, although I'm not completely convinced I've got it right, so any comments or suggestions will be most welcome.

Well Joe I am not in a direct line to John and Jennie but Henry who was
Johns brother. Is there a way to get a kit to the US and back for this test?
If so I would like to find out more about this project.
Like what kind of information is expected and how will it be shared?
privacy issues and the like Also what would I need to do?

Subject: [COAD] Looking for living COADs etc
Im sure you are all aware we have an offer from University College London to
conduct a few DNA tests on widely separated living male Coad and Coode
cousins to establish who is related on the male line. With that in mind, I
conducted a bulk mailing to about 160 Coads etc in the Australian phonebook
(one third sample) to try to find representatives of each of the main
lines. The response has so far been underwhelming (three replies) but we
have found two widely separated cousins from the main Gidleigh/Morval line.
We still have nine Cornwall/Devon lines with no representatives.
This is a great opportunity, and if anyone knows of living Coads or Coodes
that might participate, could they please contact me. We particularly need a
male Coad descendant of John Coad/ Jennie Jeffrey or any of the other Devon
Coads or Codds.
Heres the base information on my mailing letter:
==================================
Dear Mr Coode
I am writing to ask for your assistance in the Coad/Coode one-name study, a
study that aims to document all COAD(E)s and COODEs everywhere. I am also a
COADE descendant through my mother, the late author and playwright Dorothy
Coade Hewett.
What we now would like to do is to give living Coads and Coodes a chance to
find out who their ancestors were deep into the past, while documenting more
recent family histories in Australia.
Also, an opportunity has now arisen to prove all COADs are cousins. The new
science of DNA studies is able to track male ancestors in an unbroken line
and we have entered a collaboration with University College London to check
a small number of distant cousins to see if they have a common ancestor.
Normally these tests cost about US$150 so this is a very good offer for us.
For this we need to select a few living male COAD(E)s or COODEs from the
different families we have identified to receive a DNA testing kit. All
these families have representatives in Australia.
If you are interested in participating either in the COAD/COODE one-name
study or the DNA study, or have a relative who is interested in family
history, could you please contact me either by email or mail - with what
detail you have of your ancestors so we can work out your family of origin?
Very best wishes and I hope we can work together to share our common
ancestry

THE COAD/COODE ONE NAME AND DNA STUDIES
The COAD-COODE study is in a fairly advanced stage and we have managed to
allocate all the Coads and Coodes in Cornwall, Devon and Australia between
1650 and 1900 to ten big families. (So far we have not documented the Irish
families who changed their name to Coad in the New World). We are in contact
through the mailing list lists.rootsweb.com/index/surname/c/coad.html. A
preliminary website is at http://home.cfl.rr.com/ecoad/coadl.htm. We believe
that all Cornwall Coads may be descended from a single ancestor, a rich
landholder called Richard Code, born about 1500 of a minor line of royalty
through his mother. We have established a DNA project
http://www.familytreedna.com/public/coadcoode to try to establish which
lines are related, and whether we are related to old Lincoln, Irish and
Welsh families with similar names.
In this we are bound by the code of ethics of the Guild of One Name Studies
http://www.one-name.org/ which prevents us from publishing or divulging the
details of any living person. We have no commercial connections of any
kind - this is a purely a co-operative effort between cousins worldwide.

That is interesting. Mary 3/7/1753 St Columb Major, James+Jane Drew, was the fourth possibility I originally canvassed, but St Col is a fair hike and she is supposed to have died 26/5/1774 st col maj. She is a second cousin of Mary 1753 St Stephens. This will need to be confirmed with wills, I think.
Heres some more on Edward Coad the Edwards pioneer.
"Emigrating from Cornwall (reportedly Truro), England, the Coads were among Edwards County's earliest English settlers in 1817. The 1850 census indicates he was born about 1776-1777. Referred to as "Old Neddy Coad" in George Flower's HISTORY OF THE ENGLISH SETTLEMENT IN EDWARDS COUNTY ILLINOIS, Edward Coad died 1860-1870.
Undocumented reports indicate he was born Dec 5, 1776, Truro, Cornwall, England, the son of Edward and Elizabeth Ann (Logan) Coad of Truro and married Feb 20, 1776, Jane Taylor of Truro. (The 1850 census names his wife "Martha"). They had six children -- Ann (b. 1802); Mary (b. 1804); Elizabeth Ann (b. 1808); Thomas (b. 1810); Jane (b. 1814 or abt 1818); and James (b.1820) -- the existence of whom is documented."

Thank you for this information. I wondered where the information on Edward Coad of Edwards County, Illinois came from. I received by e-mail today a few pages of "History of Edwards County, Illinois" written in 1993 which contains a small notice of the Hean family and identifies Mary Coad as a daughter of James Coad and Jane Drew. No documentation is provided but it does provide another outlet for my research.
Yep sorry Beth, it tests only the Y chromosome which is only passed from
father to son. Therefore it tells only the strict male line and who is
descended on it.
So - need an unbroken line for this.
There is another test for the unbroken female line.
Cheers

Interesting John, but there are a few problems with this. First - these are two different Edwards.
Yes Mary 1753, of Edward 1709 and Grace Bullon, is a serious contender and I have pencilled her in (I didnt mention her before because I thought the couple had a later Mary in 1769, but it turns out to be their grandaughter). Other descendants of the couple ended up in Feock and Veryan, which are close.
The other Edward 1754 is the son of James and Martha, real wanderers of Falmouth, Surrey, Exeter and St Erme. This family is well known as pioneers of Edwards County and because of an 1884 work "Genealogy of the Coads : with a partial history of Cowles, Kelletts, Cowlings and others" in LDS Family History Library

Thanks for your reply. The only other possible clue I have to her identity is that her son lived in the same township in the same county (Edwards) in Illinois as an Edward Coad (b. 1776). The on-line pedigree for this Edward shows that he is from Cornwall but that his parents came from Surrey. However, the on-line parish records show that his children were baptised in St. Stephen in Brannel. If this Edward was a relative of my Heans/Heayns and the Surrey background is incorrect it may suggest that the Mary in Ruan Lanihorne may be the Mary, baptised 1753 in St. Stephen, daughter of Edward and Grace Coad, but the linkage is rather weak at this time.

Nice work on the HEANs Tigger. Unfortunately the short answer is I dont know who Mary Coad was.
As you say there were no Coad families in Lanihorne until William/Elizabeth Paddy and John/Temperance Dumble moved there in the 1830s.
It is hard to find a nearby Mary of the right age. There are a couple in St Stephen/St Columb (1751-53) but that is a bit far. Also Mary Coad 1740 Kea, but she is quite old. There are plenty of Marys in Lanihorne, but none that might be mistaken for Coad.
Peter Coad of St Stephens moved to nearby St Michael Penkivel about 1767 and had a large family, but he does not seem to have had a sister Mary.
There is another Coad/Hean marriage (John/Johanna 1845 Truro Clements) but I cant see any connection there either.
All up, the St Stephens Mary is probably the best bet (5/8/1751, Francis and Mary). I'll keep an eye out for any possible connection.
