Trevor,
I know we've contacted each other about the Pensilva/St Ive Coads in the
past, but if you would like to email me at petenjen(a)bigpond.net.au I will
send you a map of Pensilva, showing the position where our George Coad and
family lived during the 1891 census.
George was a tin miner at Caradon Mine, Pensilva, Cornwall, England.
In the 1860s (date ?) he is reputed to have gone to California, USA, to
search for gold. However, like many others of the time, he returned home
penniless. Apart from stories passed down the family line, there is, as yet
(Feb. 2005), no confirmation of the gold search adventure. However, research
by other COAD families show evidence of migration to the USA in the latter
half of the 19th Century.
He resumed tin mining at the Caradon mine, but later developed silicosis and
had to leave the mining industry for medical reasons.
Later, he became a stone mason and helped build the Outer Harbour at
Mevagissey, in Cornwall.
Regards,
Peter Thomas

From family letters and memories (from Jennifer Bevan HALL, nee KEECH) it
appears that James Henry COAD left Southampton on the US steamship 'St.
Paul' (has an interesting ship history - but that's another story!) and he
arrived in New York at Ellis Island on March 16, 1896 at the age of 22
years.

Gday list,
I have Coad relatives that lived in the Pensilva/St Ive area
for what appears to be over 200 years.
My GG Grandfather John Coad lived at lower Chariton in the early to
mid1800's and later in life moved up the road to Fillamore farm before
finally settling in Princess Row Pensilva by 1891 where I presume he died in
1894.
Johns Family in the 1851 census was as follows
COAD Peter SO - 2 St Ive St Ive 1901 f 350 77
COAD Francis SO - 5 St Ive St Ive 1901 f 350 77
COAD Ann DA - 7 St Ive St Ive 1901 f 350 77
COAD George SO - 10 St Ive St Ive 1901 f 350 77
COAD Ellin DA - 12 St Ive St Ive 1901 f 350 77
COAD Richard SO U 14 St Ive St Ive 1901 f 350 77
COAD Priscilla WI M 43 Blisland St Ive 1901 f 350 77
COAD John HD M 47 St Ive St Ive 1901 f 350 77
I have recently come across letters written by the daughter of Peter Coad
(Ellen Coad ) written in the 1930's
Her married name was Bulow and from the letters she was born about 1885 and
married about 1914.
Peter Coad moved to around London before he married so Ellen was born in
that area.
Is there anyone else on the list related to this line of Coads that has any
information on Peter Coad and Family.
I cant find any marriage between Ellen Coad and a Bulow.
Heres Hoping
Regards

Hi all COAD listers
You have all been quiet recently so here's one to think about
A friend has had an email from Australia from a lady who has ancestor named
Robert Coad. She thinks he could have been born in St Agnes c 1815 but she
is not sure. He was tried and deported in 1834 on the Waterloo to Hobart.
This rings a vague bell. Can anyone help at all.

Nigel, my ancestors came to this Country between 1846 - 1848. They brought my Great Grandfather's sisters sometime in that period. I have been unable to find any Ship Manifest Listing any of them. They came from St. Erme. Great-Great Grandfather Thomas COAD was born at St. Michael Penkevil in 1778. I believe his parents to have been Peter COAD and Elisabeth.
