Dear Ed:
The message below indicates that the marriage Records are for Victoria,
Australia. It seems unlikely that the place names in Victoria Co, Ontario
are duplicated in Australia. Oakwood is a village in Victoria Co a few
miles west of the town of Lindsay (the largest community in Victoria Co).
Millbrook is a small town in the adjacent County of Peterborough, perhaps 25
miles south-east of Oakwood. Durham County is the county immediately south
of Victoria. County boundaries have been moved around and on the dates
mentioned in the text, some of these places may have been in an adjacent
County.
Mariposa is a bit of a stickler, but I suspect it is a Township in the
vicinity of Oakwood. Unfortunately I do not have a source at home to check
township names. If someone needs to know I will look for it at the city
Library. Mariposa is much better known to me in the short story, "The
sinking of the Mariposa Belle" by Stephen Leacock. Leacock was a comic
writer with a style similar to Mark Twain with whom he was an approximate
contemporary. Leacock lived in Orillia which is in Simcoe Co, immediately
west of Victoria Co.
With the fourth hurricane of the season bearing down on Florida, how are you
faring? My wife and I are very concerned. Hurricane "Frances" worked its
way north and dumped an astounding amount of rain on us in Kingston. Hard
to believe that a storm could carry so much water so far. Although the
winds were vigorous, they didn't do any real damage. The sump pump in my
basement handled the water without flooding but some of my neighbors weren't
so lucky.

Dear Steve:
I spent a couple of hours the other day in the Kingston Public Library but came away very discouraged.
I did find a publication I have not seen before: Directory of the Province of Ontario 1857, by Wilson and Wilson. This was a transcript of an original publication rearranging the names alphabetically instead of the usual in sequence where people lived. There were two Coads listed: George Coad, Port Hope, Durham County, a Saloon Keeper on Walton Street; J F Coad MD Woodstock, Oxford County.
I have yet to look for your Coads in the Census Records.

Dear Steven:
As the token Canadian on the Coad List, it is required of me to be amongst the replies you receive. I am not related to the Canadian Coads and I forgot which of the correspondents are descended from them. I would expect that they will reply. However I may be closer to the documents relating to your relatives born in Canada than other members of the list.
It should be possible to find the family of John Coad in the censuses of both 1851 and 1861. Have you looked for them in those documents? Access to an index would be very helpful since Toronto even in 1851 was large enough to be on more than one roll of microfilm. These films are available from Latter Day Saints. As far as I know, there is no published index for these two censuses but very often through a labour of love, some very kind and generous person has made an index of his county and filed it in his local library. For Toronto, that would be in the North York Public Library, 6th Floor, Canadiana Room. About a 3 hour trip by train for me and a night's stopover in Toronto. Sorry but I would not be able to manage such a trip. I guess I will have to see what I can do locally in Kingston, Ontario.
John Coad appears to have died in Toronto in 1852 and fathered a child in Toronto, in 1854. Is there an explanation to this anomaly? What source did you have for the information you present?
It makes an interesting story that a widow with a large family should emigrate to Australia in 1863. I wonder if she had relatives, either hers or her husbands, already in Australia, for her support. In 1863 I would expect that she had to travel back to England before embarking for Australia.
Any chance that Eliza's name might be "Blainey" instead of Blamey. A transcription error from handwriting might produce this spelling.
From about 1783 to 1840, births, marriages and deaths in Upper Canada (Ontario) were recorded in Church Parish records. For the first 20 years of that period the churches were mostly non-existent and the recording was done by traveling clergy. A lot of records have been lost. The Methodist Church has published their records but there are many omissions. From 1840 to 1868, births, marriages and deaths were recorded by the County Courts. !868 to the present have been recorded by the province and copies of provincial records can be found in LDS libraries. The county records are not in good shape since people figured that the events had been recorded in the Church books what more was needed. Nevertheless the births of all of the children except Eliza Jane should be recorded in the County records. These were published by the Ontario Genealogical Society and a copy is supposed to be in my local Kingston Library. The part of Toronto that existed at that time was in York !
County. So much of this stuff has been put on the internet that for all I know that has been done with these documents. I can't keep up with the galloping pace of things nowadays.
If you have not searched any of the documents mentioned above let me know. I will see what I can find but don't hold your breath. I am not terribly reliable.
Yours truly

Thanks I shall digest your input -
Most dates had come from others via email so there is some discrepancy
John COAD more likely died circa1862 as on Eliza's Immigration in Victoria had an Emily aged 1 -
also the extended family all came as the two eldest daughters arrived with husbands and children.
If anyone could come by indexes to the Census you mentioned would be great - and help find the correct microfilm's from LDS.
TIA Steve

Yours truly
