Social Security Death Index (SSDI)
The U.S. Social Security Act was signed into law in 1935, by U.S. President
Franklin D. Roosevelt. Social Security Administration (SSA) was then
established. The SSA stated the registration of workers Jan. 1937 and
benefit payments began in 1939.
History buffs, go to:
http://www.ssa.gov/history/briefhistory3.html
The Social Security Death Index (SSDI) lists people who are deceased for
whom a death benefit was paid or for whom the Social Security Administration
had received a death certificate. 1937-1939 are key dates. If your ancestor
died before Jan 1937, no data is available.
The Social Security Death Index, can give details on an individual's birth
date, death date, Social Security number, state/county code of residence,
last residence zip code, and the zip code where the death benefit lump sum
payment was sent.
The best 0n-line SSDI I have found are on Ancestry.comhttp://www.ancestry.com/search/rectype/vital/ssdi/main.htm
or Kindred Konnections
http://www.mytrees.com/cgi-bin/genealogy/navf?-1+0+S+English
Also, with a name and the Social Security number that you get from the
Social Security Death Index, and $27, you can obtain a copy of the
individual's original application for a Social Security card. The
application (SS-5) often contains much information of genealogical interest,
such as fathers name, mothers maiden name, home address and place and type
of employment, at time the application was made. This info is only available
from SSA on deceased persons.

Bear with me - I'm new at this. Eber was my grandfather and Claude was my
uncle. Tell me what you need to know, and I'll try to help if you share
what you have about Eber's family tree.

Is there any reason I have not been getting postings from the COAD-L list?
The last one I received was on January 31st 2002.
