I have received a letter from a 5th cousin? Miss Pat Rice from Kent, England
and an unnamed friend. She dose not have E-mail so I am posting her message
to the List. She is a descendent from the eldest daughter of Robert COAD and
Priscilla SKIBBOW nee HOOKE, Priscilla
First she ask about a enquiry to the Devon Society from 1979 submitted by
Mrs. Maurine JAGGER. She would like to know if Maurine is still alive? Or
maybe some of her children? I know that her son Robert was helping her with
Genealogy of the COAD's some time ago. I will now quote the enquiry that
Maurine posted and Pat has a question about.
"COAD: John and Jane "Jennie" (JEFFRY) emigrated to America about 1827. John
was son of Robert and Priscilla (SKIBBOW) of Ermington and Jennie was the
daughter of William and Jennie JEFFRY (mother's maiden name unknown)
Before John and Jane left, John was supposed to have been in a feed and
flour mill business "Ted Brook Mills" (?) set up by his uncle Jerry HOOK.
Is there a connection with Tedburn St Mary or Venny Tedburn and is anyone
else researching these families?"
Now quoting from Pat's letter.
"Bearing in mind how family stories often become distorted with the telling
over the years yet still retain an element of truth we have wondered if:
Against 2 or 3 of the Baptisms of John's children in Ermington Parish
Register he is described as being a Miller of Ludbrook Mill near Modbury. So
was "Ted Brook" Mill a distortion as we have no idea where it was.
There could have been a connection with Tedburn St Mary or Venny Tedburn
both on the River Culvery south of Crediton Area, a few miles N/W of Exeter,
but we've found no Ted Brook Mill in that area. The HOOKEs came to the
Wemburry/Ermington area from Crediton.
What puzzles us most is WHO was Uncle JERRY Hook? My friend has never came
across a jerry Hook an although James Hooke -- father or son, would have
been the most likely to have "set up" a business neither of us ever seen any
reference to either of them being referred to as JERRY. It' curious.
So we're hoping you may be able to shed some light on our mystery."
If anyone has information on this I am preparing a letter back to pat and
would like to include answers to her questions. But I need your help. If
any of you would like her mail address please contact me by my address not
the list. As I do not have permission to post her address. I will forward
any and all addresses to her.

Keith, et. al.,
Thank you for your quick response to Bonnie & Sandra Coad. I did forget to
mention that they are not yet members of the COAD-L. So for the time being
they can be contacted directly at codeshack(a)xtra.co.nz
Hopefully, they will join our bunch and share their COAD family tree with
us.

Dear Bonnie and Sandra Coad:
Since it wasn't clear from Ed Coad's message whether you were on the Coad-L list or not, I am sending this reply to both the list and direct to you. If you get two copies of the message that is why.
I am also not sure if I am the best informed to reply to your message. Probably not but I thought I would give it a try. Since this message will go out to Coads all over the world, perhaps someone better informed than I can straighten out my goofs. I would recommend any reply you make should be sent to the list with the e-mail address: COAD-L(a)rootsweb.com . This will go to all of the Coads in the list and some one of us may recognize your family.
If you want further information about the Coad List, have a look at this web page and its links:
http://home.cfl.rr.com/ecoad/coadl.htm
And add it to your "Favourites" ["Bookmarks"].
I have a comprehensive Atlas of England with complete index and with maps at 3 miles to the inch which show every village with a name and I also have maps of the part of Cornwall the Coads came from at a scale of 1:50000. This scale is about 3/4 mile to the inch and so detailed even the names of farmhouses are shown. But I am unable to find a place called "Coadsville". Do you know what town in Cornwall it is close to?
The suffix "-ville" is peculiarly new world and I don't know any examples of places in England with it in their names. There is a place called "Coad's Green" about six miles south of Launceston, about 18 miles northwest of Plymouth. Perhaps this is the place you are referring to. The Coads come from southeast Cornwall and part of Devon immediately adjacent, including the city of Plymouth and bounded by lines between Plymouth, Launceston, Bodmin and St Austell. By new world standards this is an astoundingly small area of not much over 25 miles in any direction.
In order to be of help to you we will need more information about your father and his ancestors. Can you give us his name, his date of birth and his place of birth. If he was born in New Zealand, we would need to know the name of his father, his date and place of birth, his wife's name, date and place of birth and date and place of marriage. If both of your Coad grandparents were also born in New Zealand you will have to back up another generation. New Zealanders I have corresponded with, frequently know the name of the ship and the date that their ancestor travelled from England. Apparently records of immigration to New Zealand have been better kept than they have in Canada.
Because of similar names running in families, it helps if you can list the brothers and sisters of your father's family and the uncles and aunts of your grandparent's family. I have 8 Samuel Coads and 6 Joseph Coads in my family tree. Knowing spouse's names and parent's names helps sort out which one is which.
If you do not know an exact date, an approximation of the year will do providing you qualify it with "about" or "circa". The names of towns or Church parishes are useful if you know them.
I hope you will find these notes useful in tracking down your Cornish Ancestors and that the members of the Coad-L list can be a help.
Yours truly

We would be very interested to learn anything new about our family. Myself
in perticular.
We already know that our family comes from Cornwall, England, on our fathers
side. We know there is a village in Cornwall called coadsville and that this
is were we ariginate from. My father has visited there and told us that the
town church has birth and death records streching back in to the sixteen
hundreads. This village was apparently founded by a man with the name of
Coad.
All very interesting!. This is about all I really know about our fathers
side of the family. I have far more information about my mothers and as you
no doubt under stand this makes our familly history very lop sided. I would
love to know any thing else about Coads or Coadsville.
Yours sincerly
Bonnie Coad

G'day Ed,
Good to see you back in cyberspace ..... Glad you're on the mend, albeit
slowly, and hope it won't be too long before you're firing on all eight
cylinders again.

I must say "thanks", to all of you who had a prayer for me and sent me your
