Hi folks,
Exciting news. Well at least for me it is.
Just got hold of 1900 Census for NYC today and found my grandfather, Edwin
Ernest Coad, Sr. and his brood on the rolls.
Included was his mother, Mary Jane COAD, nee CARNE.
I found two interesting new facts.
First, I was always told my grandfather was an only child, no let me correct
that, he was an only son. However, in this Census they asked each woman how
many children they bore and how many alive.
Great-Grandmother, Mary Jane COAD responded with 3 born, 2 alive. So, now I
have a real COAD mystery. Was he an only son? Who were his siblings? What
happened to them? None of the family papers I have been privileged to see,
mentions that my grandfather had siblings.
Second, I learned the date of my grandfathers arrival in U.S.A., 1874 and my
grandmothers arrival here from Wales 1888.
Since I know when grandfathers parents were married, 15 Aug. 1861and he was
born on 1 Jun 1862, one can only assume he was the first child.
Now I will need to see the 1871 UK Census to look for his siblings. This
family was residing at 3 Prospect St, Plymouth, Devon, UK in 1862.
1871 Census would read something like this:
Head: John Swett COAD, Age 35 b. 16 May 1836 Devonport, England
Wife: Mary Jane COAD, Age 36 b. 18 May 1835 Berry Pomeroy, Devon, England
Son: Edwin Ernest COAD, age 8/9, b. 1 Jun 1862 Devonport, England
? Missing child
? Missing child
Anyone have access to these Census? Need help!
Ed Coad
I need to thank Bob COAD of Nevada, for the tip on New South Wales Registry
of Births, Deaths and Marriages. It covers 1788-1945 Death and Marriages,
1788-1905 Births.
http://www.bdm.nsw.gov.au/cgi-bin/Index/IndexSrch.cgi?sessionID=4185
I found the first listing for COAD starting in 1851, with just a passing
glance I could see family member connections.
As suggested by Nigel, I will be adding a link to this site on COAD-List
webpage.

Thanks for that and the Victorian one, but unfortunately the
required death date falls outside the current scope of the NSW
death indexes.
I'll just have to wait or find another way. But, basically, I
have most of the details on my "grandfather", what I REALLY want
to know is who my "biological" grandfather is so I can get the
"real" genealogy done on that side.
Cheers,
Charles

No. You've misunderstood. We KNOW who she was married to, we
KNOW -- who until he died -- brought my father up up. What we
want to know is WHO was the man who got my grandmother pregnant
to produce my father.
Just realised you probably meant in relation to the unknown death
and burial. Well, here in Australia the BDM indexes only go up
to 1945 for deaths. My grandfather died some time between 1952
and 1970. But, yes, I'm sure there are some documents somewhere
if I seek them out. One would just expect though, with my
grandmother alive, with my father alive, and with an aunt alive
and with my uncle safely housed at government expense, SOMEONE
should be able to just tell me.
Cheers,
Charles

Dear Coad-L Respondents:
Ed gave us the names on his father's and his mother's side that he is
researching in addition to Coad. This struck me as a very good idea since
one of you might very well be researching the same family as I. This would
be particularly true of my Cornish ancestors. The full list of all of the
surnames I should like to pursue is so long I don't suppose any of you would
read through it. I currently stand at 31,727 people in my genealogy file
all related by blood and marriage although if truth were told, about 3,000
of them are not my ancestors nor my wife's. A number of ancestors of
brother's-in-law and sister's-in-law are included and the ancestors of
spouses to cousins because of multiple connections between pairs of
families.
The Cornish ancestors are my mother's. The surnames and earliest known
birth places are:
Knight, St Minver; Wickett, Lewannick; Skinner, St Teath; Bryant, Luxulyan;
Mitre, St Mabyn; Coad, St Neot; Snell, Creed; Nichols, probably Luxulyan;
Taylor, Liskeard; Gattley, St Clement; Udy, Luxulyan; Burnard, Quethiock;
Gatly, St Clement; Luke, probably St Clement; Giles, probably Luxulyan;
Grose, probably Luxulyan; Ibbott, probably Luxulyan.
Happy hunting to all
Keith
Q. What other surnames are you researching or have researched on your
Fathers side?
A. Carne, Vaughan, Owen, Jones, Sweett (Sweet), Michell, Taylor, Burnard
Q. What other surnames are you researching or have researched on your
Mothers side?
A. Harris, Müller, Dobbin, Lunau, Neimeyer, Maiskouski, Salewsky, Zeratsky

Dear Ed Etal:
I have been busy with a new house and with branches of my ancestry other
than the Coads. The "Roll Call and Survey" might be informative to someone.

I thought it would help for all of us to get to know each of better if we
did a little survey of our members. I will go first on my next message to
the group using the form below.
Please fill out the survey below.

Q. When did you start doing Genealogy?
A. On retirement in 1991.
Q. Have you linked with anyone from the COAD-L?

relative to Coads.

filing cabinet drawers and from people other than internet sources fill four
more. I have 180 names in my Address book almost all of whom are internet
source relatives.
Q. Name of Genealogy software used (if any)?
A. Personal Ancestral File, Version 2.31. It writes GEDCOM files that
translate into all other programs beautifully but runs into trouble with
other people's GEDCOM files from Genealogy programs and newer versions of
Personal Ancestral File, that have fields I don't have.
Q. If you could go back in time and visit one dead direct ancestor, who
would
it be and what would you ask them?
A.What an interesting question! Do I have to limit it to one: I can think
of at least a dozen. I would ask them to tell me everything they know about
themselves, their parents, grandparents and any other relatives they can
name.
Q. Country residing it? A. Canada
