Does anyone have a Stephen CLUTTERBUCK in their files who would have been
of age to marry in Hasfield, Gloucestershire (England) in 1784 ?
His marriage and children are there but it doesn't seem that he came from
there. The IGI has one reasonable candidate being baptised in Eastington
in 1755 , father Giles. The above Stephen also has a son Giles.
Curiously the Clutterbuck book does not list the 1755 baptism of Stephen.

Valarie,
Yes and no. The Hasfield family that I think James and William belong too
also has a Hannah baptised 23 March 1800, dau of Stephen and Betty
CLUTTERBUCK. However there is also a burial entry that matches her, Feb
11th 1814 Hannah Clutterbuck age 15 of Hasfield.

I don't know if this helps you but I have an 1820/21 marriage certificate
in Dursley between Isaac Smith & Hannah Clutterbuck and the witness is a
William Clutterbuck. I don't know what relationship he was to her -
possibly her father or brother. Did your William have a sister Hannah?

I wonder if anyone can shed any light here.
On 26 August 1816 at St Mary de Lode church in Gloucester city two
marriages took place.
The first (first in the register anyway) was my ancestors William
CLUTTERBUCK and Sarah BALDWIN (although the entry says BALDING). The
witnesses were James CLUTTERBUCK and Jane SURMAN.
The next marriage entry is that of the above witnesses James and Jane with
William and Sarah as their witnesses. James are Jane were described as
bachelor and spinster and both of the parish of St Catherines
(Gloucester).
My interest is to try and identify who James was to try and progress my
confirmed ancestry. I don't have conclusive parentage for William but the
best candidate has a brother James (bapt 1790 in Hasfield) four years
younger so I *like to think* the 1816 marriages are my William and his
brother.
>From the IGI I see two likely Jane SURMANs :
Jane Bapt 5 Oct 1788 in Deerhurst to Giles and Sarah
Jane Margt bapt 7 Oct 1797 in Ashleworth to William and Jane Margt.
Both Deerhurst and Ashleworth are very close to Hasfield. The older Jane
seems more likely on the basis of the fact that just Jane rather than Jane
Margt was given in the marriage register. In Gordon Beavingtons online
census I find
============================
1851 census for Apperley in the Parish of Deerhurst
entry 115
CLUTTERBUCK James 61 Blacksmith Deerhurst
Jane 62 Deerhurst
=============================
which is agreat match for the marriage above given:
location
ages (matches suspects James baptism also)
occupation (I don't have any evidence of James as a blacksmith but
William was one).
Against is that the James I am trying to call brother of William was
baptised in Hasfield. However William was confused over his birth place
specifying Hasfield in one census and Ashleworth in the next.
I've found all this out in the past week so I can do more work yet re 1841
census and hopefully later children in the civil records. (None show up in
the IGI).
Anyone know anything about James ?
