Hi, Zelda. I'm putting the pic in the mail for you today.
You should know that the little towns where I was searching when I found the
CLATTERBUCK stone were mostly settled in the 1850s. Many of the "settlers"
moved on, or some of their immediate descendants did, to states further west
- where it seemed there were more opportunities. The grass is always
greener, in short. So this may indeed be a branch of your family that
stayed in Illinois - and of course it may be family that returned to the area
(though I can't think why - some of the little towns are dying, but don't
tell them I said so).
I also think there was at least one other CLATTERBUCK stone - I snapped this
one because of the Afghan hound and raccoon.
You may wish to write to Parish Priest, St. John the Baptist Roman Catholic
Church in L'Erable IL or to St. Martin's (?) RC Church in Martinton or maybe
to St. Marie's in Beaverville (modern name for St. Marie) to ask about
Clatterbuck burials or other records. Iroquois county also has some
excellent historical materials, but not sure where kept. On rootsweb. there
is a list that covers Iroquois, Ford, and Kankakee Counties - subscribe by
sending the word "subscribe" [no quotes] to ILFORD-L-request(a)rootsweb.com.
Good luck. I hope this has helped. Please let me know if you ever get the
story on the Afghan hound and the raccoon.

Greetings, Clutterbuck group. I am writing to let you know about an
extraordinary headstone I photographed on a recent twelve-cemetery-tramp in
eastern Illinois. This headstone marks the grave of DAVID R. CLATTERBUCK
(yes, with an A). His dates are Mar 21, 1953 and June 3, 1974. Just 21
years old, in short.
Here's what brought a tear to my eye: AN AFGHAN HOUND AND A RACCOON HAVE
BEEN BEAUTIFULLY INCISED ON THE STONE, one on either side of the block
showing the name and dates. The Afghan hound is probably six inches tall,
to give you an idea. The whole effect is most elegant and interesting, a
wonderful memorial.
It seemed to me that some CLATTERBUCK (or CLUTTERBUCK) may wish to know about
this, so here I am.
I encountered this headstone in a Roman Catholic cemetery, I think St.
John's, in L'Erable -- though it may have been in Mount Olivet Cemetery in
Martinton - or another town in the region. The towns named are both VERY
small
towns that may not be on the average Illinois map - we were journeying
roughly between I-57 and the Indiana border south of Kankakee but north of
Watseka.
Please let me know if anyone on this list has a connection with or interest
in this headstone, and I will send the photo by snail mail.
