This is most likely the same line as mine, but there was also another CLUTTER in Ohio that we are not related to as far as I know. I moved recently and don't have all my records unpacked (there are two or three pallets of boxes in the garage!!!). But what I DO have access to is the following:
Thomas C. Clutter (no other information available)
???????????? |
Stephen Clutter (m. Catherine Brown on Aug. 13, 1835)
???? Children:? Elizabeth, b. 1836; Andrew H., b. 1839; Salina A., b. 1842; John F., b. 1843; Hansford, b. 1845;
??????????????????? Sarah C., b. 1846; Harvey H. b. 1848; and Eliza A., b. 1849.
???????????? |
Harvey Hansford Clutter (m. Rebecca Jane Williams (Half Choctaw Indian per Dawes Index)), b. 1847,
??????????????????? d. Kiowa, KS 1894;
????? Children: Samuel Pinckney "Pink" Clutter, b. 9/8/.1872, d. 12/6/1935,
??????????????????? m. Bessie Maude Immell; Frances "Fannie" L. Clutter, b. 4/13/1884, d. 10/28/1932, Helena, OK;?
??????????????????? Arthur Larkin Clutter, b. 4/8/86; d. 11/11/1921; Alonzo Millett Clutter, b. 11/30/88, d. 10/16/1944
???????????? |
Frances L. Clutter?(b. 4/13/1884)? married William Wickham Kline, Kanopolis, KS.
??????????????????? Ran in the Cherokee Strip land rush; homesteaded?near Helena, OK. Divorced.?
???????Children:? Edith; William Harold (10/2/1906); Howard
???????????? |
Harold W. Kline (name legally changed) b. 10/2/1906, d. 1/17/1991, Kanopolis, KS.?m. Mildred A. Smith, 1941
??????? Children:? William Lester (b. 10/16/1942, d. 9/25/2007); Carol Christine (b. 3/10/1947)
Neither Edith nor Howard Kline had any children. Edith and her mother, Fanny (Frances), are buried in the
??????????????????? Helena City Cemetery, Oklahoma.
There were some Clutter cousins who lived in or near Great Bend, Kansas when I was young. I believe the father's name may have been "Gene", but am not at all sure.
I also am not sure we are related to the Harvey Clutter family in southwestern Kansas, but there is a good possibility since we did have cousins at Great Bend. My hometown was Kanopolis, in the center of Kansas. I remember very clearly the 10:00 news on the night the family was murdered, and remember that I was afraid to go to sleep because they might be coming for us next! (I was about 10 years old at the time.) Later, I was a radio announcer at KAFM radio in Salina and watched the minute by minute news teleype?when Hickock and Smith were hung in 1966 or early 1967. The amount of time it takes depends on how much the person weighs...one took 18 minutes and the other took 21 minutes. I had dreams of the horror the family went through for years after the fact. It still bothers me to think about it. What a tragedy for a family of innocent, neighborly people!
This is about all the information I have. However, I do know there was another group of Clutters who lived near Helena, OK,?at the same time ours were there. They were not related to us.
Let me know if I can help with any additional information and I will try to find records.
Carol Kline Bradbury

I suspect that there is some relation between your Clutters and the ones I am
researching. What I have is very limited.
Anna Medora Clutter (1856-1933) born in Indiana, father was James Clutter,(b.
1818, in VA). James had a brother, Samuel, (b.1823, VA) who went to Ohio
(Mercer Co. area, I think). Samuel had a son, James Alexander Clutter, who was
born in Mercer Co.OH. Samuel was father to Herbert W. Clutter of Kansas. Anna
Medora Clutter was g-grandmother to the person I am helping with this genealogy.
Any information you can help with will be greatly appreciated.
Oh, and this Clutter family ties to a Parrish family.

Gail, I may have a tie-in for you. Samuel Clutter (b, VA abt 1823) moved to Ohio and died in Iowa where he was living with his daughter. His brother, James, went to Indiana. James' daughter, Anna Medora Clutter, married Samuel Eli Rudy and went to Washington State. So there is both Iowa and Washington here... I think we need to talk.

Deb,I have some pretty strong theories about the Samuel Clutter you are talking about (Mercer Co., Ohio. I think some of the the descendants wound up in Kansas and Iowa, plus Oklahoma. I'd sure like to compare notes with someone researching this line.

I am looking for the parentage of James Clutter, b. Virginia abt 1818 and his brother Samuel Clutter b. Virginia abt 1823. I'm sure there are siblings but I don't know who they might be.
James lived in Indiana, Ohio and Iowa, dying in Iowa, I believe. Samuel's kids were born in Mercer Co, OH. James first married Rachel Parrish, married Cecilia Parish in 1841 in Vermillion Co, IN. Then it appears that he also married a Ceilia Parrish sometime after 1850, In Indiana. Rebecca and Cecilia appear to have been sisters. Not unusual for that time frame. There were children from both marriages.. Meredith, John, Anna Medora, Harriet Lucinda and Ella E. Anna Medora went to Washington State, Harriet and Meredith went to Oklahoma. I do know for certain that Anna Medora was first cousin, once removed to Herbert W. Clutter, who was portrayed in the book *In Cold Blood* as she spoke about this to members of the family. Any Virginia Clutters here?

It is hard to google on Clutter because of the famous crime involving some of the cousins. Sad but true. When I tried to do a google archives search that is all that turned up.

Yeah.. it's really sad when people plagarize other people's genealogy work and then get all kinds of pats on the back from people who don't know better. Same thing happened to me twenty years ago.. so I don't put my work up any more, just watch for people looking for help and give it when I can.
