Further research has convinced me that John Vance who was raised by Samuel Clutter and Margaret Vance Clutter was NOT my gggrandfather. While I may be related as a cousin, I am not in his direct line.

Deb,
I'm afraid I must be brief as we are about to leave town for a week's vacation.
This is the right town in Germany. You must be careful with any German churchbooks as the spelling is notoriously variable. It's "Weinheim" and the Pfalz was the name of the Palatinate in German. Look on a map around Heidelberg and you should see Weinheim, and maybe then Birkenau.
I would like very much to trace Heinrich Poler/Bohler (note the spelling variations, again) to see whatever happened to Susanna, the widow CLUTTER. Please note the dirty little secret of CLUTTER research. The subsistence lists show not only the son Casper of Susanna, but also a younger son John. I know of no further mention of this John in any records, but his existence throws a monkey wrench into any claims that Casper was the only progenitor, which is what you often see on the web.
By the way, when you are researching (especially German records) keep in mind that I have seen the name spelled "CLUTTER, GLODER, KLUTTER, CLATTRE" to name just a few.
Good luck,
Bill Hampshire

Hi Bill,
On your posting here you state, and others state also, that the Clutter family originally came from Birkenau Germany.I have found a posting from Colleen Mills on the Onondaga New York message board that states:"In the West Camp Lutheran church book(west side of the Hudson River, south of Albany)in the marriage record of 24 Aug.1710 it calls the bride Susanna, widow of Johann Paul Clotter of Berchenheim by Weinhelm in the Pfalz, and the groom Johann Henrich Poler of Alt-Zheim on the lower Rhine.West Camp,New York by Rev.Joshua Kochertal.Susanna is on the Hunter lists of 1710(Governors'-subsistance list),along with her son,Casper Clotter" Now,I am wondering if Berkenau and this Berchenheim are the same place? Is one a village and the other a "county"? What does it mean by "Weinhelm in the Pfalz"? Since you sponsored the research of the origins of the Clutter family in Germany...I am hoping you can clear this german geography up! Thanks! Deb

Thank you Bill,
I really appreciate your time. I do know that a lot seems to be available on Casper, and I hope to find it all. I am stuck trying to find the Daniel Van Etten that sponsored, ( I believe )Jannetje, when she arrived from Germany.
Any thoughts?
Thanks again.
Kimberly

Kimberly,
Yes, Johann Paulus was baptized at the Dutch Reformed Church at Readington NJ in 1721. You can get the records thru the LDS Library System (as did I several years ago). You will also find a baptism for Magdalena, a daughter of Casper and Jannetje, in 1724. This would be the daughter called "Leanah" in Casper's will. (And although I spent many evenings looking, there appears to be no other baptisms at Readington.)
Note, however, that in good German fashion, this son would be called Paul. The Johann or John is a German praenomen which is a kind of extra name preceding the one by which he/she is known. This praenomen is likely used for all the sons (in this example) and is undoubtedly the origin of the of a family tradition that says they were all named John.
Therefore, this is almost certainly the Paul CLUTTER, Sr, who appears in Morris Co NJ in 1758-1772 and in western VA later in the 1770's.
There is a lot more information on Casper available than it may appear. You have to know where to find it.
