Resurrecting old threads seems to be an ok thing to do on this forum, (a little Geneaology joke there..) but I thought I would chime in on this old thread. *waving across internet* Hi Smyttie, hi Nancy, hi others..
John Stilwell Clute 1 and 2 were my great 2x and 3x Grandfathers. A few corrections to the above: (sorry I can't resist)
John Stilwell Clute the elder actually died in New Westminster. You can check my family tree for his death certificate as well as my family's collection of photos. After his wife died in Ontario, he went to BC to stay with his son of the same name, and that is where he died and was buried. There were only three of the same name that I know of. John Stilwell Clute 3, of Rossland ("Jack as he was known to family) never had any children. The only surviving son who produced any heirs was my Great Grandfather Charles Gerard "Gerry" Clute, who had 3 girls. My Grandma was a "Jacquie" as she was meant to have been been a boy and called Jack. Jacquie was the only one who stayed in Canada so my family is part of the "Canadian Clutes" although we don't carry that surname.
I'm also searching for the parents of our John Stilwell Clute the first, born Dec 29 1801 in Charlestown, Montgomery, New York. Nancy says she has had a breakthrough on this topic and I'm on pins and needles waiting!
But until then, I thought I would put this out there - maybe it deserves a new thread and I'm hoping somebody will find this one day in Google:
We are missing a Clute Family Bible and have been since the 1980's. It had been willed to my Father and specified in the will that it would belong eventually to my brother, following the male lines of our family. The whole situation is a bit of a story: a relative in the Potts family in Washington State or maybe Portland area was repeatedly asking to see it. It would have been a descendant of Doris Clute Potts. The name Patty or Paddy Potts comes up but nobody is for certain. After many attempts at asking to see the Bible, it was clarified that somebody was on their deathbed and it was their final wish. My Father packaged it up and mailed it off to them, and we never saw it again.
I don't think that finding the family bible would solve the John Stilwell Clute mystery necessarily, people who have seen the Bible remember that it started out with John Stilwell Clute (2?) and documents his journey west, with stories. It would mean a lot to my family to have it back. Luckily some family researchers have done some hard work over time and have managed to get photocopied stories that seem to be pages from it. If anybody has any clues, especially members of the Potts family, you can reach me at cluteseeker [at] gmail
