Hi Stephanie, Nice to hear from you again. The Clute search goes on.
John Stillwell Clute, born 28 Dec. 1801, Charleston, Montgomery County, New York (needs further verification) died 28 November 1896, New West Minster BC.(is verified through British Columbia death certificate), buried in the Masonic Section of ......... Cemetery. (need to look that up in my records again)In the section of this cemetery are three John Stillwell Clutes; the first 1801, the second 1840 born in Ontario and the third born in 1867 New Westminster, BC. All buried in close proximity. Along with other west coast Clute family members.
J. S. married Maria Wood Clute in Ernestown, on 25 December 1827. They lived, until Maria's death, in Picton, Ontario on 18 Nov. 1881. Maria is buried in Glenwood Cemetery, Picton, Ontario. On the same plot with her are two of her grandchildren, John W, and Mary Scott. John died at age 7 and Mary at age 3, in 1863. Likely of something like smallpox. They died ten days apart.
A few years after Maria's death, John S the first moved to British Columbia to be near his son, the 1840 J. S. where he died in 1896.
This information has come from public records and several west coast Clute families. In September I paid my respects at the grave of Maria Clute and the two Scott Children. This was the Scott plot. The parents of the Scott children were David Scott and Frances Eliza Clute Scott. My gr-grandparents.
Also while in that region of Canada I found the grave of Agnes Clute Ross and her husband Lewis Ross in Port Hope, Ontario. Agnes was the sister of Frances E.
Using Derick Clute and Katherine Shonts as likely parents I find three surviving children. A son, Richard, born 1789, a daughter, Mary, born 1790 and John Stillwell born 1801. Also listed in other sources are the names of Ann, David and Henry. Nothing to verify these names. However, given the distance between 1790 and 1901 it is highly possible that these three children were born and died in that time frame. Who knows.
Did Brian list the children he had? Wondering if they match the three I have listed as possibles???
As for the West Coast Canada Clutes there is a wealth of public information for anyone who cares to search and I would be happy to lend a hand.
For now,
Nancy

Sorry I didn't establish the connection between the Stillwells and John S. Clute. John's wife, Jenny Clarkson was the 1st maternal cousin of Maria Smyth who married John Stillwell. No blood relation to J.S. Clute though unless back on JOhn's side.

The first John Stillwell Clute is the son of Derick Clute and Katherine Shorts ( or at least t here are some sources that say so.) Born 29 Dec 1801.. possibly either New York or Canada. He died 28 Dec 1896 in Enestown, Ontario, Canadea.. Married Maria Wood on 25 Dec. 1827. This information came years ago from a Brian Harling.. No proof that I can find. He gave several children from the Derick marriage, but the only one that is still likely is John Stillwell.. No idea why the name.

Hi Nancy,
Thanks for replying. My STILLWELLs began with John who married my g-ggrand aunt, Maria Smyth d/o John and Mary Sparkhall Smyth. John was the son of a Baptist minister in Haldimand Co. ON, Thomas Blakely Stillwell b.supposedly in NYC 1808. His family came to Canada when he was 12. He married Elizabeth Hestand/Heistand d/o John Hestand nd Margaret Fretz. They had nine children, John being the eldest b. 1826. John and Maria had 11 Children. They lived for a time in ON then moved to Mecosta Co MI and later to CA. I wonder if there might be a connection since Thomas B was from NYC. I have always been curious about that.
Any thoughts?

Hi, sorry for the delay. As for the Stilwell name, John Stilwell Clute born in 1802,is the first Stilwell I have run into. He is the father of John Stilwell Clute born in 1840 (near Picton, Ontario)and the grandfather of John Stilwell Clute, born in 1867. Nothing like making life confusing. It has been my opinion that the "Stilwell" name came from New York State where the Clute family originated from. However, I have not been able to tie it to any one family in the east. Your J. S. Clute is the one who was born in 1840, in Ontario, Canada..
FYI, J. S. the first, 1802, was married to Maria Wood born in New York State.
I am interested to know about your Stilwell line.
Regards,
Nancy

I just found this thread, Nancy. I am related by marriage to JOhn Stillwell Clute Jr. who married Jenny Clarkson. Jenny's mother was my g-g-aunt, Jane Sparkhall.
My curiosity was peeked by the Stillwell name as I have Stillwell's in my tree and wondered if you might know if John's middle name was a family name and where it originated?
