Nancy, Thanks. Will add in the additonal information.
Richard Garret Clute, born 30 May 1789 son of Gerrit Richard Clute and Margaret Shibley(shively, shipley, sheber). This is an interesting family. They came after the revolution to claim free land in Canada. Ther is a huge amount of information on the family in the pension records. Gerrit applied for his pension, but died too soon, so then his widow claimed and she had to go back and prove birth, marriage, and then the move to Canada listing the children. Then had to show which children were still living..Gerrits children that survived until Adults. John G. ( Jane Frase),Mary ( Oliver Church),Richard ( Sabra Ann Goldsmith).. They had three other provable children, Anna, David and Henry who did not survive until 1834, but could have survived long enough to marry. My notes say that both Gerrit and Margaret died in Marysburh, Princxwe Edward county. Pension file M804,microfilm 584. W 23813

Thanks Bob for you reply. This is a large and confusing family to "chase". I am contimplating a visit to Quinte a year from now. Long trip from Minnesota. Hoping to get some things sorted out in the mean time to make my time there more productive, if possible.
Can you tell me where the "Quinte OGS" is located?
Regards,
Nancy

Hi Stephanie,
Nice to see some more Clute messages. We have communicated quite some time ago. I have continued to research my branch of the Clute Family as you have seen.
I have seen reference to Richard Denike Clute marrying Katherine Shorts but find no reference to their children. They can certainly fit the picture, as being the parents of John Stilwell Clute. What I need to find is if there were other children who I can tie to Picton. The one person I wonder about in this capacity is Richard Gerrit Clute (1789-1873)who was reported as being a store keeper at Holloway Bridge (Picton) and married Sabre Ann Goldsmith(1795-1873).
Just to add a few things for you to add to your research.
1. Frances Eliza Clute Scott born 1 Feb 1831 d, Carlton Co. Ottawa, Ontario 22 Oct 1893.
2. I do have the date of John Stilwell Clute's b. as 29 Dec 1801 from several sources, death correct.
3. James M. Clute b. abt 1844, married Ella Saunders, daughters Mable E.(b.cir.1875) and Florence M Clute (b.cir.1878) and son, Walker S Clute. Daughters born in Missouri, son, b. 12 Sept 1891 in British Columbia. Could be several other children born between 1875 and 1891 who did not survive. That's allot of years between children.
4. Agnes, b 15 May 1834, married Lewia Roaa. they remained in the same genteral area of Quinte. Hd eight children.
5. Charles C. Clute b. 26 Sept 1828. Married twice, 1. Sarah Mullin and 2. Harriet Alywin. Probably died in Texas. Family unknown.
5. If interested have allot of information on John Stilwell the son of our main subject.
This Clute family of mine are at the top of the pile for confusion, which makes the search more intriguing.
More to come I am sure.
Nancy

Hi Nancy
I've seen John Stilwell Clute on a number of papers at the OGS Quinte branch, but have not researched him as he is not my "john". However there are a lot of Clutes in the South Fredricksburg Tp and Prince Edward Co. to this day, that may be part of his ancestry and mine. I am a member of the Quinte OGS, however, have had no time to chase these Clutes. Possibly Steph Hochuli may have more on them. I must spend some time in Quinte and see what they have.

Agnes Glad for the up to date information and will enter it.
Derick (Richard) Clute, born in Canada, lived Ernestown,Lennox and Addington, Ontario. Referred to at least once as Richard Denike Clute. Married Katherine Shorts and had John Stillwell 1809.. No other information on him. Got this from a Brian Harling years and years ago. No idea who he is in Canada this early..There is some possibility that he is Richard Henry, bo 3 Jul 1785, the son of Gerrit Jacob Clute, the loyalist.

Hi Stephani,
It's been a while. I have done quite a bit on the Richard R. Clute line as he was my ggg-grandfather. It is an R and no P. I'm not sure if you just had a typo. He Married first Hannah Armstrong Wright , wedding bond dated 10 Oct 1840, Picton, ON. I got a copy of the bond from the Library and Archives Canada. He married Harriet Goldsmith (nee Shibley) on 22 May 1883.
Son, Thomas Goldsmith Clute married Amanda (Minnie) Carson, 23 Jul 1873 had Gerald Leslie Clute 15 Mar 1883-10 Jul 1947 and Harold Alexander Clute b 17 Nov 1878.
Thomas was in the dry goods and hardware business among others in Stirling ON with his brother-in-law James Milne, husband to Harriet D Clute.
Gerald (Gerry, Jerry) Leslie Clute married Marjorie Harrington (d. 1963) and I don't think that they had any children.
Harold Alexander Clute married Renee Julliete ? 10 Jul 1915 in Edmonton AB. I think that I have her maiden name somewhere. This was a second marriage for her and she came to Harold with 2 children, Katleen Marie Clute(b 17 Jun 1910, Hillcrest AB)and Peter Bruce Clute (22 Jan 1914 Winnipeg Manitoba - 14 Jul 2007 Mesa, Az, USA). Together, they had a 3rd child, Richard (Dick) Carson Clute b. 1 May 1916 Edmonton, AB. Harold went to Washington state and the family stayed in the USA. I have made contact with some of the descendants.
In Stirling Cemetery in Stirling, ON, is the single obelisk type grave marker with the names of Richard R. Clute, Hannah Armstrong, Gerald Leslie Clute and (I think) Amanda Carson. I have taken a photo of the marker when I visited 2 years ago. The cemetery records also show that Marjorie Harrington is also buried there but is not marked at the site.
Kind regards

Hello Robert,
I continue to search for the parents and grandparents of John Stilwell (aka Stillwell) Clute born in New York State 1801. Married Maria Wood Clute (born 1805 in New York State) on 25 Dec. 1827 in Ernestown, Ontario. The couple lived for many years in Picton, Prince Edward County, Ontario. Their children were: Charles C, b. 26 Sept 1828; Frances Eliza (my great-grandmother)b. 1 Feb. 1831 (Bath, Ontario); Agnes Marie, b 15 May 1834; John Stilwell Jr. b. 15 Jun 1840 (note: there are at least three more John Stilwell Clute's decending from J. S. Jr)and James "Jim" M. Clute, b. about 1844.
John Stilwell Clute the father died in New West Minster, BC 28 Nov. 1896. He had left Picton after his wife, Maria's death on 18 Nov 1881. John S. Jr. lived in New West Minster and presumably that is why John S. Sr. went west. Maria is buried in Glenwood Cemetery, Picton, Prince Edward County, Ontario. She is buried on the D. Scott lot along with two children of her daughter Frances Eliza and her husband D. Scott. I add this because no one knew of the existance of these children, John age 7 and Mary age 3 who both died in 1863, in Picton, cause unknown.
I have gathered quite a bit of information on John S Sr and his family but nothing about his ancestors. I think that he is somehow related to the other Clute families of Prince Edward County, especially near Picton. Perhaps he was a cousin of one of them or a brother.
I have had corresponded with John Bishop and have reviewed his papers. My John S. Clute Sr. is mentioned in his papers but nothing to tie him to the rest. Just a clue here and there.
If you or anyone reading this message can tie this all together I would be delighted and greatful. Even a new clue is appreciated.
Regards,
Nancy

You are correct about John marrying Mary Ann Robertson, daughter of William Robertson, UEL, as stated on the Order in Council 1839, Northumberland Co.
The Marion you mentioned is actually their grandaughter, the daughter of Benjamin and Nancy (Prentice) Clute. Seemed she lived with them for a time.
I have found no record of a Harriiet being born to John and Mary Ann. A Harriet was born to a George Clute in Hastings Co.
The daughter Archie refers to is Sarah Ann, my GGGrandmother who married William Prentice. She was born about 1821. I have not yet found her birth records. Being born that early, some fellow researchers I've discussed this with feel she may have been born in Leeds Grenville, or Edwardsburg Tp, (where her mother is from) Some suppose that John met Mary Ann in Edwardsburg where she lived. Married there and had Sarah, before they moved to Northumberland in 1826. Sarah is buried beside her father John, south of Midland, Ontario. I have exhausted hours upon hours in the archives looking for records of Sarah and her parents, in Edwardsburg and Leeds-Grenville. Nothing yet.
I will put together a GEDcom on John and send it to you if you wish.
Children of John and Mary Ann
Sarah Ann 1821-1898
George Norman 1831-1916
Benjamin 1832-1911
William L 1834-1914
James R 1837-1924
Peter 1840-1921
Charles 1842-1918

Hello Stephanie
I know of Richard and Hannah. I have them in Stirling Twp, Hastings Co, Ontario in 1851 with 5 Children. There are a large number of Clutes in that area, along with Prince Edward Co.
I descend from John Clute, 1798 -1875. I have been researching this branch for several years, and have collected a lot of information on his descendants, hoping to stumble onto a clue of his origins. The first document I have of him is he is in Percy/Seymour Twps, Ontario, 1826. Farmer, Married, with two children. One Girl, (my GGGrandmother and a younger boy)I trace him through censuses and land records up to his death in Simcoe Co, Ontario. I've been to his grave. Some researchers attach him to John D Clute, Schenectady, NY, (b:Mar 1798 to Nov 1875). Problem with that is that "that John" lives and dies in the USA. US Federal Census show him there at the same time "my" John is in Canada. All Canadian Censuses state his birth to be Ontario, Canada. So I continue to look.
As I said, I have alot on John's descendants, if you like. Are you collecting all Clute info, are you after a particular Clute?

John Clute, born ca. 1798 married to Mary Robertson, lived in Canada. I
have 8 children from him in all.. Chances are he is the son of Gerrit Jacob
Clute, bp. 23 Jan 1763, son of Jacob Clute and Mayke Lansing. He married
Sarah Evans ( ie Heavens). He is a loyalist and is in the records of
Committee of Safety in Schaighticoke. His children born in US. were George,
Jacob and Richard Hanry. His father died in 1796 and he was not mentioned
in will, but could have beenalive, just disinherited for Loyalist. At least
he looks as if he was a son. His children from the 1851 census seem to be
George,Peter, Benjamin, William, James, Marian and Charles. I also have a
daughter named Harriet from some information from an Archie Andrews, who
descended through her. George is a well known variant of Gerrit in the
dutch.
Yes, I collect all Clutes anywhere in the US and Canada.
If you would like, I will supply you with information on Gerrit Jacob and
wife..
