ALEXANDRIA, Va. — On Jan. 5, 2006, Frances Clute passed away in Alexandria, Va., after a long and rewarding life. She was 90 years of age.
Frances was born to William and Katherine Haley in Plattsburgh, N.Y.
She attended Plattsburgh Normal School, she obtained her bachelor's of science degree in education from Syracuse University, and did post graduate study in English literature at the University of Vermont.
Fran met her husband, John, in 1941, when both were active in the Plattsburgh Little Theater. They married in Plattsburgh on May 11, 1942.
Frances is survived by husband, John, who resides at Lake Forest in Plattsburgh; her sons, John Jr. and his wife, Penelope, James and his wife Marta; a daughter, Marilyn K. Clute of Alexandria, Va.; and grandchildren, Sean, Christopher, Erik, Lara and Andrew.
Fran was a high school English teacher at Peru Central, Keeseville Central, and at AuSable Valley Central School. Fran and John operated the Village Inn in Keeseville, N.Y., in their home on Main Street during the 1950s.
Fran and John retired in 1976 and the moved to Dunedin, Fla., where they lived together until 2004. During their retirement years, they were fortunate to be able to take several trips with friends to various parts of the world. They returned to the North Country during the summer months to enjoy Lake Champlain and the company of their many friends from this area.
Fran will be missed by her husband, family and friends. She was always cheerful and kind, a devoted and loving wife, mother and grandmother. She had a great fondness for her former students from Peru and Keeseville and many of them have inquired about her often even years after her retirement. Her family will establish an award in her memory for students at AuSable Valley Central School. Fran was particularly close to students who struggled to learn. She thought if she could give a student the confidence to speak in front of a class, read a short story, or write a simple essay she had accomplished more in enriching their lives than she could do for college bound students. The Frances H. Clute prize in English will recognize a student for her or his effort and progress in learning.
Donations to the fund that will be established for the prize can be made to "Clute, Clute and Thompson Trust Account" with the note FH Clute Prize and mailed to Clute, Clute and Thompson, P.O. Box 2885, Plattsburgh, NY 12901.
A memorial service will be held for Fran in Keeseville, N.Y., this summer. The family will publish an announcement of when and where the service will take place.
