Where were they in 1850 and 1860? Names of children, etc., would help. I can
start in 1880 and try going backwards. Have access to some databases and also
some knowledge of the area around White Plains and Westchester County.

I forgot to mention what I find a little interesting is that my John Tompkins is the son of John Tompkins, whose first wife's name was Tamar/Thama Shute, rhymes with Clute and a Clute married a Shuter, very close!!!.

Thanks for the info, I'll try researching from that. It is very possible that is the line she comes from because, my Tompkins line did business in the city as well as having residences in the city, guess they traveled back and fourth.

I quick check for Clute surname in NY Census for 1810, 1820, 1830 and 1840
finds no Clute surnames as heads of households in Westchester County. In the
time frame only 3 names in NYC area. Most in Schenectady and further west.
Possibly Margaret married in Westchester and moved there from somewhere else.
FamilySearch.org shows her and family Tompkins in White Plains. Assume this may be
source of your info.
Have you found the family in 1850 census? That may verify the info in
FamilySearch. Lots of John Tompkins to check out.

I have some Clutes from that place, but no Margaret.. John James Clute, born 1753 lived in New York City, went to Trinity Episcopal church, had three daughters that I have found. Catherine 1782, Aletta 1787 and Sara 1796.
John Clute born 28 Dec 1792 might be a brother. He is the son of Douwe Clute and Elizabeth Van Huysen. He married Mary Jackacks, they were married in New York City, Garden St. Dutch Reformed in 1822..
Doue Clute married twice. Elizabeth Van Huysen and then Ann Shuter. Douwe and Ann had a daughter Margaret Shuter, who seems to be bp. 10 Oct 1815 at St. George Epis..This was in Schenectady however. Douwe died in Schenectady. Some of his family moved into the area of White Plains.
