Tom,
I'm also looking for a Cluny in Northern Ireland. No luck so far. My William Cluny b. 1828 Ireland (was protestant, so I assume N. Ireland, but I guess he isn't necessarily from N. Ireland, but more than likely) and died in 1902 in Lincoln County, Missouri, USA. William's middle name is possibly Daniel. William came to the US via Canada and appears in the 1850 census of Detroit, Wayne County, Michigan living in a boarding house, listed as William D. Clooney. William at some point around 1861/2 married widowed Margaret McPherson (McPherson was supposed to have been the name of her first husband, and they lived in Canada for a time) either in Michigan or Canada. Margaret was born in 1820 in Scotland. She and her first husband were said to have a full grown family back in Scotland. I do not know her first husand's name. After she and William Cluny married they had one son, Daniel Cluny (my Great Grandpa) b. June 1863 Michigan d. Jan. 3, 1905 Lincoln County, MO. It's s!
aid that William worked his way down to Missouri by laying track for the railroad. He is in Lincoln County by 1870. I do not have them on an 1860 census though, William should be either in Michigan or possibly Ontario, Canada I would think. Daniel was born in Michigan, and there are stories of William getting lost in the thick forested area they lived in and being followed by a bear for 3 days while he tried to make his way back to his home. So, they must've at some point moved out of the city area of Detroit and into the countryside. I don't have any information on William's parentage at all, except that both parents were born in Ireland. William immigrated to the US about 1849, according to the 1900 census. He was not naturalized. Let me know if you get any leads on Cluny's in Northern Ireland. Thanks.
Patty
