Beginning March 2nd, 2020 the Mailing Lists functionality on RootsWeb will be discontinued. Users will no longer be able to send outgoing emails or accept incoming emails. Additionally, administration tools will no longer be available to list administrators and mailing lists will be put into an archival state.
Administrators may save the emails in their list prior to March 2nd. After that, mailing list archives will remain available and searchable on RootsWeb
Anyone we know:
KNOTT _ Charles Rowland, age 81, passed away peacefully on November 26,
2001. Survived by many children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Private family service to be held.
Since March of 2000, I have been able to collect some family history of this connection, mostly names but it does fill in some of the pieces. Isaac had remained a mystery with me also until making a contact with a grandson. If you like I will transcript on the site, but it will be at a later date as I am quite busy with the curling season.
The deaths that came through the BCArchives I have had and have those figured out as to where they belong. Would you like those findings also?
I visited at the Clugston farm in the summer of 2000 and it is a summer residence. We search the land registery office which is in Owen Sound for Grey County. I could possible do that when time permits. The information is layed out by each lot and Concession and you pay for the photo copies you make.
Take care
Inez
Where is the Cloverdale library? By the way, I live in California. I got
an email from a librarian from the Ontario Archives that the RG61 series
doesn't go out on inter-library loan (I've borrowed other microfilm from the
Ontario Archives on interlibrary loan). If you can access the RG61 series,
it might be neat if you could share the information :)

We could find out the history of ownership of our James & Annie Clugston
homestead, but apparently RG61 isn't available on inter-library loan, so one
of us would have to check it out at the Ontario Archives in Toronto (see
below). I visited the area last summer, and one of our distant cousins told
me that the owner's probably someone who lives in Toronto and uses it as a
summer cottage.

I found that one of the attestation papers of Clugstons for WWI available on
the National Archives' website is for one of Isaac Clugston (son of James
Clugston & Annie Knott)'s sons, Fred Wellington. He was apparently living
in Eburne, B.C. as was his father when he signed the papers, in 1916.
Does anybody, particularly Caren, know when Isaac and how many of his
children moved out there? It's touching that one of Isaac's sons is named
Robert Ewart.

Hi Mary Ann et al:
It is always my greatest frustration that I have the least details on those
closest to the immediate family.
I know Milton came out in 1910, I think Ewart the year before. Milton's
notes say Issac b. July 21 1866, married Oct. 26, 1894, died Aug 20, 1943 -
believe it or not, that's all I know about "uncle Isaac"!
I'll have to go through the photo albums etc. for clues.
Question: Wellington would be a 'middle' name, right?
'Eburne' became 'Marpole', a sub of Vancouver in the early 20's.
While going through my collection I thought I 'd type out this copy of a
newspaper clipping of interest:
(Where from & when I don't know)
FARM IN CLUGSTON NAME 100 YEARS
The Clugston farm on lot 1 , Concession 5, Euphrasia Township, has been
in the family name for four generations, extending over 100 years.
In March, 1856, James Clugston bought the farm from the Crown, and here
he brought his bride, 16 year old Annie Knott. Six sons and four daughters
grew to maturity, (Sarah) Mrs. J. D. McArthur, (Rachael) Mrs. William
Abercrombie, (Ellen) Mrs. James Smythe, Miss Louisa, Isaac, Elijah, Ewart,
Fraser, Milton, and Harold, all of Vancouver. All are still living.
Elijah Clugston purchased the homestead and married Ella Black, a
daughter of Mr. and Mrs. William Black. Their four children, Stanley,
William, Jean, and Dr. Maurice, made up the third generation. William has a
farm in the Sligo district, (Jean) Mrs. Russell Lawson, is a member of the
staff of the Meaford Public School, and Dr. Maurice Clugston is a
veterinarian in Meaford.
In 1933, Stanley purchased the home farm from his father, and he and his
wife, the former Vina Wiley of Wodehouse, still live there. The fourth
generation consists of two daughters and two sons, Anna, a graduate nurse,
Lois, a third year student nurse, Alan, a grade 12 student, and Hugh, a
grade 8 student at Epping.
The fine, fertile farm overlooks the beautiful Beaver Valley, and there
is a grand veiw for miles around.
(So then, what of the farm today ?)

Information received from Jopie Lougheed, 23 Erie Street, Collingwood, Ontario
L9Y 1P3 following my submitting my pedigree chart to the Bruce-Grey Branch of Ontario Genealogical Society. This was when I first started to comply the CLUGSTON family and had asked for assistance in the research in Grey County.
You may have this information, but will pass along what she gave me.
1) KNOTT John (circa 1844)
Died circa 1844 on the boat bringing his family to Canada from Sligo, Ireland.
Married Jane LOUGHEAD (28 May 1793 - 8 May 1861) a sister to Hugh LOUGHEAD who had previously came to Canada in 1831.
It is likely after the death of her husband Jane and her family consisting of at least 4 of her 14 children stayed with her brother until they found a home of their own.
Parts taken from her will: Dated 8 May 1861
"She states she is a widow. She leaves her daughter, Margaret Knott (unmarried) all her right, title and interest in 12 acres and 150 rods of land in the northwest corner of Lot 26 in the fourth Concession of Euphrasia. She is also to receive the entire, exclusive and undivided use of her dwelling house situated on said part of land. Also one bed and bedding complete - her box - one cow, yellow colour, called Lily and all the sheep and cupboard to her use and benefit forever.
I leave to my son Hugh Knott (if he come to this part from his native country) the other cow which I now possess, if he does not come to this country, my will is that my son, William Knott will get said cow at my decease.
And I do nominate my son James Knott and John Curry to be my executors (and guardian of my daughter, Margaret Knott)
To my granddaughter, Eliza Jane Knott, daughter of my son, J. Knott, one bed and bedding complete, when she shall come of proper age.
Her executors were: William McElroy and Hugh Abercrombie."
Her known children at this time were: James, William, Margaret, and Elizabeth. A son Hugh came later. The family first lived in Chinguacousy Township, Peel County later moving to Euphrasia Township, Grey County.
The 1852 census for Euphrasia has the following:
KNOTT Jane, age 50, born Ireland widow
William, age 21, born Ireland Yeoman
Margaret, 13 born Ireland
KNOTT James, age 40, born Ireland, Yeoman, married
Rachel, 47, born Ireland married
Ann 10, born Chinguacousy ***
John 8 born Chinguacousy
Hugh 6 born Chinguacousy
Jane 4 born Euphrasia Township
Robert 3 born Euphrasia Township
The family lived on Concession 4, Lot 26
*** Further research shows that Ann was only an infant when she came and was born in Ireland.
Land records show that James Knott bought land, on Concession 4, W1/2 Lot
16 in 1847, from the Canada Company. This is the same year Hugh Looughead, and his sons-in-law John Curry, James McNeece and Thomas Reid also bought land in Euphrasia Township.
In 1861 census for Euphrasia Township:
KNOTT, Jane, age 70, Ireland, Widow
Margaret, 20
Jane and Margaret are still living on Concession 4, Lot 26 as well as James and his family. Family members have told us that their home was on part of the James Knott farm and that Margaret never married.
In the 1865 W.W. Smith Gazetter, James Knott is on Concession 4, Lot 26 in Euphrasia Township.
Following is what we know of each of the children of John and Jane Knott in Canada. From one of the daughters obit we know that some of their children remained in Ireland. At this time we know nothing about those who remained in Ireland.
11) James KNOTT (born in Ireland circa 1814 - died in Euphrasia Township, 24 April, 1881, aged 66 years, 6 months and 14 days)
His obituary from the Markdale Standard gives us the following information: James Knott became a resident of Euphrasia 33 years ago. He died at Springfield Farm, one of the most beautiful homes in the country. He was a member of the Township Council and its first Deputy Reeve and father of ex-reeve, E.E. Knott.
James married in 1840 Rachel Taylor (1811-10 July 1883) in Ireland. Both are buried in St. James Anglican Cemetery, Fairmount, Euphrasia Township.
>From the 1880 Atlas of Grey and Bruce Counties:
James Knott of the Township of Euphrasia - Came from Sligo where he was born in 1814. Settled in Chinguacousy Township in 1844. Three years later he moved to the Township of Euphrasia. He was a Justice of the Peaace for many years and was 16 years in Council. The last three he was Deputy Reeve.
111) ANN KNOTT (8 March 1843 - 4 June 1931) Born Ireland, came to this country when five months old. Married 29 Jan 1858 James CLUGSTON (15 June 1829 - 1898) possibly a brother to John and Rachel (Bell) Clugston. Both are buried in Temple Hill Cemetery, Euphrasia Township. According to the W. W. Smith Gazetteer for 1865, James (Clugston) farmed on Concession 5, lot 16, Euphrasia Township. (Also a brother to Robert who married Eliza KNOTT).

I'm still continuing to order Clugston & Knott certificates, but Gloria's
last email motivated me to share what I have so far.
I've gone through the Ontario birth/marriage/death indices for Clugstons &
Knotts and ordered some of the certificates. I've attached information from
the Knott certificates I've copied, which I can now fit into our tree. I
hope this descendant chart we're creating might help us locate other Knotts
interested in family history - especially if they have family myths to
share.
Irish Civil registration is available:
birth 1864-
marriage 1845-
death 1864-
So one of these days I'll see if I can locate the certificates for some of
the Irish events that Gloria gave us.

Caren,
I have the 2nd Euphrasia publication: "Euphrasia II - Fascinating
glimpses of the life in the Township". And a photocopy of the Knott and
Clugston entries from the census in the Euphrasia 1 book. I thought the
initial book was out of print but I'm going to try again to track down a
copy.

Which Hugh is this one??????????? (Lougheed or Loughead)
This information to be verified.
My parents live in Fargo also. Grand Forks is about an hour from Fargo. There was an article in a North Dakota History magazine which showed a land plat and Hugh Lougheed was on it--close to a famous man. If you are interested, please let me know and I will find that information. My e-mail is olson_cher(a)hotmail.com (Cheryl in North Dakota)
This Hugh lived in Grand Forks, ND. I also have a William Lougheed that married Lula Salisbury and had a daughter, Emma. Does this sound familiar? Would be 1900-1920. William was from Canada, but that's all I know for now. olson_cher(a)hotmail.com
Gloria, William T. Lougheed married Lula Salisbury 26 July 1923 at Devils Lake, ND. They had a dtr, Emma, (who married a Frost), but Lula died not long after Emma was born. William took Emma back to Canada and his parents raised her. His father may have been Hugh Lougheed; he had an uncle near Minnewaukan, ND, also for a time. olson_cher(a)hotmail.com
I just started my search on the Lougheeds so I don't have much information. My grandfather Hugh, was from Canada. I don't know about William. One or two of my uncles live in Fargo ND. Thanks Cindy.

Hi again:
I'm forwarding these from the Ontario list, an important issue re Canadian
research. If the issue is new to you, basically as it stands now, details of
1901 census are presently sealed. This means researchers cannot access
information re their own grandparents/parents. Permission cannot be obtained
from the dead. A Bill is presently on the table to allow access, a petition
is circulating.
The Euphrasia Clugstons, as with many other families, did not register their
births. Consider supporting this lobby group.
