Folks,
The following is a message I sent to the COUNTRYMAN Mailing List for which I
am also List Admin. I wanted to share the good news with both the CLUFF and
SCAMMAHORN Mailing Lists since my CLUFF and SCAMMAHORN ancestors are also
buried in this cemetery besides Elizabeth (COUNTRYMAN) and her husband,
James WASHBURN. It was on their farm that this cemetery was initially
created.
My CLUFF and SCAMMAHORN relatives buried in Washburn Cemetery were:
Charles C. and Susannah (WASHBURN) CLUFF
Henry and Margaret (CAPLINGER) SCAMMAHORN *
George Washington and Mary Ann (ROBINSON) SCAMMAHORN
* On this stone, it states "Gone but not Forgotten". Well, since the 1980's
I feared they were forgotten except for me of course. I couldn't get them
out of my mind. I made a nuisance of myself to everyone I could think of
for help in clearing the cemetery. Living in New Mexico, this was not
always easy to do. I'm delighted to bring you the good news and provide
another web page with better photos of the cemetery.
Anyone needing additional information on this cemetery, please contact me
directly at: siders(a)cableone.net

Subject: Re: [CNTRYMN] Washburn Cemetery, Highland County, Ohio
Hi, Folks!
Bob Patton, a subscriber on this mailing list informed me last week:
"...the Trustees of Brushcreek Township (Highland County, Ohio) are
re-working the Washburn Cemetery. They still have a lot of work to do -
but, they have put a nice fence around it, and they are planning to repair
broken monuments, etc.
There is now a nice, easy entrance to the cemetery off Fort Hill Road. But,
it is not gravelled (yet), so don't try it if it is raining. You can still
walk it. If you like the progress they are making, it might be well to send
a little note & tell them so (after you have been there). I have told them
what I think of it. Their Trustees are on the ball. They have done a lot
of work in nearly all of the cemeteries in Brushcreek Twp."
This is marvelous news for descendants of Henry Countryman of Virginia and
Highland County, Ohio through his daughter, (Magdalena) Elizabeth who
married James Washburn. I personally have at least nine direct ancestors
in this cemetery and possibly one more without a stone.

I have quite a collection of photos and maps of this cemetery since the late
1960's (See the web links (by year) at the bottom of the above URL.) I
apologize for the condition of some of the early photos. They were scanned
from faded slides.
It is such a shame that this set of Trustees was not in office twenty plus
years ago but I do thank this set IMMENSELY for their consideration and HARD
WORK today!
