Beginning March 2nd, 2020 the Mailing Lists functionality on RootsWeb will be discontinued. Users will no longer be able to send outgoing emails or accept incoming emails. Additionally, administration tools will no longer be available to list administrators and mailing lists will be put into an archival state.
Administrators may save the emails in their list prior to March 2nd. After that, mailing list archives will remain available and searchable on RootsWeb
I would love to have them if it is not too much trouble to send by email.
Thanks,Dorothy

Bill, Harry Cloys had one son, who had one son, both deceased. I don't
know if Donald E. Cloys born 1944 had a son. I will try to find out but I
think I am out of luck. I didn't know Harry's children or grandchildren.
The were born and lived in California. He was divorced and remarried. He and
his second wife spent a lot of time in St. Louis with his mother Lillian
Cloys(Jesse Guy) and sister Jessie Fayant.
I am disappointed. This project sounded very interesting. I will let you
know if I find out anything positive.
Thank you for all your hard work.

Helen,
Yes, the surname line must descend directly from father to son to son, etc.
So your line would need to have a male direct line descendant tested of
anyone from Harry Cloys (or his brothers if any) or any of their male
ancestor's male children.
This is why I had to search until I found an appropriate male 3rd cousin
in my line bearing the Cloys name to be tested -- my gr-grandmother was
Sarah Elizabeth Cloys who married William Nelson Asbell at which point the
direct line of Cloys was lost as far as my being able to test for *my*
Cloys' line Y-DNA characteristics.
Are you aware of any other male in your family line who is a relative
still carrying the Cloys surname with Luke Nichols Cloys in common with
you? If agreeable to testing this fellow could be used to represent your
family and thus connect back to a common ancestor with my line in the
person of James (4) Cloys.
Hoping the above procedure will work for you?
Bill Harvey
Bill, If this is through the male line this won't work. We are maternal
descendants.
Luke Nichols Cloys
Marcus Calhoun Cloys
Jesse Guy Cloys married Lillian Moore Berry
Their children
Harry Cloys
Jessie Cloys married Alfred Fayant
Their children
Alfred Fayant
Louise Fayant Blankenmeister (my mother)
I have been told that Luke dropped the (e) because you didn't hear it, so it
wasn't unnecessary.
This Note was in my Cloys family bible(begins with Marcus Calhoun Cloys)
The following notes were taken from an interview with Francis Marion Cloys
by Marion Lee Cloys his grandson in 1924, possibly with some discrepancies..
He was 94 years old.
James Cloys ran away from home in Mass. at the age of 17. He went to sea and
carried on slave trade. On his last trip, pirates robbed him and took his 30
negroes and killed all his crew but him and one other man. He went to
Christian County ,Kentucky, and at the approximate age of 25, married a Miss
Nichols. From Christian, County, KY he moved to Henry County, TN, where he
died about 1850.
I am sorry I didn't realize it could only be through the male descendants.
Helen

Helen,
If I am interpreting your question correctly --- you and your brother
are direct paternal line descendants of Luke Nichols Cloys.
You (being female) do not carry the male Y chromosome but your brother
does providing he is in the direct male line of Cloys descent downward
from Luke Nichols.
And your son would carry the Y-DNA chromosome inherited from *his*
father which I am assuming would mean that he carries the Slack Y-DNA.
Likewise your first cousin on the Cloys side will also carry the male Y
chromosome *providing* this person is male and is in the direct male
line of Cloys descent downward from Luke Nichols.
As well, your father, his father, his grandfather, etc, and all of
his/their *male* descendants will carry this same Y chromosome as long
as an adoption from a different family or an out of wedlock event has
not occurred to interrupt the direct male line of descent.
Rather you, (being female), will carry the mtDNA (mitochondrial DNA) of
your direct line *female* ancestors for as far back as surnames are
knowable and on back in time from there.
By the way my 3rd cousin who will do the Y-DNA testing is descended from
Henry Calvin Cloys - younger brother to your Luke Nichols Cloys - also
has a family history of spelling the name as CLOYS. I wonder how their
father, James #4 spelled the name? Have you ever seen the use of Cloys
on documents by him?
I have just emerged from the Death Valley segment of my winter vacation
trip and am able to find the internet again here in Arizona so I expect
to have the Cloyes/Cloys DNA project setup and ready for use shortly.
I'll give you the high-sign as soon as it is up and usable.

Does it matter if I use my son, my brother, or first cousin on the Cloys
side? As you can probably tell we are related through Luke Nichols Cloys. He
supposedly changed the spelling of the name. I have met some wonderful
people through this research.
Thanks, Helen

Hi James,
Well I am not permitted to discuss price specifically on a Rootsweb mail
list but I think I can say that the cost of the very informative 37
marker test has been very substantially reduced for a limited period of
time (until year end).
Normally the 37 marker test is all that is needed to indicate the level
of relatedness between two male test subjects - but remember - it will
not identify which one of, for example, five brothers, the testee
*could* be descended from - but rather that he is related (or not) to a
specific family line as *suggested* by paper trail research. In other
words it is a great tool for verification of proposed documented research.
In order to take advantage of the discounted price the order must be
made through the Group order form.
I will privately e-mail the actual price list to you now and to any
others who indicate interest.
I am planning to talk with my own Cloys relative and get an order
started for him during this heavily discounted period.. If you and
others are really interested I can get a Cloyes Group set up in quick order.
Thanks for the interest.
