Subject: Help Save the Sarah Clayes house
I just sent this out to as many people as I know may be interested in
saving
the Sarah Clayes house, which once again, is up for auction. I love your
site, and it was very helpful to refer people to it for photos and a
story.
If you know of anyone who might help save the house, feel free to
forward
this on. Thanks!
In March, 2001, I sent out a call for help in saving the Sarah (Towne)
Clayes house in Framingham at 657 Salem End Road. Sarah Clayes escaped
hanging for witchcraft and moved to Salem End Road in Framingham on the
Danforth estate (Danforth was one of the witchcraft judges). Sarah's
two
sisters, Rebecca Nurse and Mary Easty, were not as fortunate and were
hung.
Although the house was purchased by a group of people who planned on
restoring it and we all breathed a sigh of relief, it seems that the
cost of
restoration exceeded their expectations, and once again, the house is
being
sold at auction by Wells Fargo Bank. The auction is to be held on July
15th
at noon at the site. A deposit of $5,000 (must be in cash, certified
check,
or bank cashier's check) must be paid by the purchaser at time of sale,
balance due in 30 days. At the last auction, only people who had the
$5,000
were allowed to bid.
I am asking if there is anyone or any group of people who might be
willing
to save this house. There may be funding available for restoration (but
not
for purchase) from the "Save America's Treasures" program, and may be
other
grant monies availabe, provided it is opened to the public (some
programs
only require that it be opened to the public a weekend or two a year). A
group from Salem has offered to "connect" the numerous Framingham sites
that
are relkated to the witch trials, to their literature, since many of the
Salem witch families, especially the Towne's, relocated to Framingham
and
their houses have for the most part been restored and still survive.

I am willing to be the point person until someone steps up to lead the
"Save
the Sarah Clayes House" movement. Please let me know if you, or anyone
you
can refer me to, might be interested in helping with this very important
effort; also forward this if you think it will reach people who can
help.
