First I need to apologize. In my zeal to assist I discover that I have made
a bad error in calling the Elizabeth b. 1735 a descendant of Sarah and
Peter. She was a descendant of Peter and his first wife Hannah Littlefield.
Sarah Towne Bridges Cloyes would have been a step-grandmother.
I would say it is likely that your Elizabeth is a descendant of either Peter
Cloyes, or of Sarah Towne Bridges Cloyes (Sarah and Peter had only one child
who survived childhood and it was a female so her descendants would not have
had the Cloyes surname.) The Elizabeth b. 1735 would have been the daughter
of John Cloyes and Zerviah Towne. John Cloyes was the son of James Cloyes
and Mary Towne. James Cloyes was the son of Peter Cloyes and Hannah
Littlefield. Mary Towne was the daughter of John Towne and Mary Smith. (John
Towne was the son of Jacob Towne - brother to Sarah Towne Bridges Cloyes)
The only Elizabeth I have in my file that might fit the bill as your
Elizabeth other than the one who married Zaccheus Ballard is the Elizabeth
who was daughter to John Cloyes and Elizabeth Morse. I don't have a
birthdate for her or any further information, but John and Elizabeth were
married in 1730 and had at least 4 children following that. If Elizabeth
was a latter born child, the birthdate might be as late as 1740's - but that
would still place her in her 30's at marriage to your Joseph Ballard. Not
unheard of, but a little unusual to marry this late in life, unless it was a
second marriage. This Elizabeth's father John Cloyes was the son of the
James Cloyes and Mary Towne mentioned above - so again, a connection with
Peter Cloyes and his 2nd wife Sarah Towne Bridges Cloyes. Peter's only son
to have male descendants who survived childhood was this James Cloyes. Both
of Peter's sons lived in Framingham. I have only the 4 descendants for John
Cloyes - and out of the 4 only 1 was male (this male had a daughter
Elizabeth but she was born 1769). The other son, James Cloyes m. Abigail
Gleason in 1740 and had 6 children that I know of, none named Elizabeth.
I do have in my file - Betsey Cloyes who m. Joseph Ballard and their 10
children. I have Joseph dying in 1806 and Betsy in 1804. I have no
parentage for Betsey listed, but have her birth as Framingham. Betsey and
Joseph lived in PA - most be your Elizabeth. Several of the descendants of
Peter Cloyes moved to Framingham following the witchcraft thing, so it would
make sense that this Betsey descends from him.
Another thing to consider - if Elizabeth Cloyes was in fact the descendant
of Sarah Towne Bridges Cloyes as the article alleges could she have been a
descendant of Sarah and her first husband Edmund Bridges? Did one of the
Bridges female descendants marry a Cloyes and have Elizabeth? I don't have
any Bridges in my database who married a Cloyes, but this is an angle to
consider. The Towne, Cloyes, Bridges, Smith, Ballard families intermarried
often.
Sorry I can't help more - but will certainly keep my eye out for this
mystery Elizabeth/Betsey as I feel sure she must connect to this family
somehow.
Visit my web site and see if it stirs up anything that will help. I have
info on the Cloyes and a little on the Ballard families.
Cloyes; http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~walkersj/ClayesFamily.htm
Ballard; http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~walkersj/Ballard.htm
This is a later Ballard family, but I'm sure descends from the same as
yours.
Let me know if anything else turns up that may help pin this down for you.

I have Elizabeth Cloyes who was born about 1735 and was married to Zaccheus
Ballard. She was descendant of Sarah and Peter. But - she and Zaccheus were
having children as early as 1759 in Framingham, MA. I do have that Zaccheus
was from PA. What more do you know about your Elizabeth? This is the only
one I have who sounds possible. I have more on this family if it is the
right one, but not much - except on the ancestry.
