Hi all!!
How is everyone? 'Met' two new Cloyes researchers today - will be sending
them your way Tom to hook up to the list.
As to Joanna Blessing -
I am not aware of any witchcraft accusations BEFORE coming to America, nor
of an actual 'accusation' after coming to America - just rumors and gossip.
I have read the majority of the 'good' books on the witchcraft thing and I
have seen this mentioned a few times, but the explanation has been found in
what I consider to be the best book on the witchcraft problems and how it
related to our Towne and related families, "Currents of Malice" by Persis
MacMillen. The gist is found here, the chapter is several pages.
In Chapter 8 she says
"In 1670 Joanna Towne, then a widow, seventy-five years old, became
involved in a ministerial battle in Topsfield. Such battles were endemic
in early New England towns, and were to escalate to a terrible climax in
neighboring Salem Village, twenty-two years later....
The first settled minister in Topsfield, the Reverend William Perkins, had
been minister at Gloucester. It is hard to reconcile the complaint of one
of his lady parishoners that "he was better fitted to be a lady's
chamberman than in the pulpit," and those of his supporters who declared he
spoke the truth in a manner that would make other ministers hide their
faces in shame, and that he could pronounce the word 'damn' with greater
emphasis than any other man of his time! His detractors on the other hand,
did not hesitate to hail him into court on the charge of drunkeness...
His replacement (in 1663) was Reverend Thomas Gilbert, a Scotsman. It was
not long before he too was in trouble, and for much the same reason. He
was presented in court on suspicion of being 'overtaken with drink'.
As all three Towne sisters were imprisoned for being witches "like their
mother before them", and their mother was "old Goodwife Towne", a little
background information about the relationships between the Goulds and the
Townes is necessary. These families were on opposite sides of a quarrel
involving the Reverend Gilbert....At the time of the court trials in which
Goodwife Towne appeared in 1670, she had been a widow for two years. As
Joanna was living with her daughter in law Phebe Perkins Towne (a Gould
descendant), it was a situation ripe for mother/daughter in law discord.
Joanna, as will be shown, was in effect saying that Phebe's mother, the
wife of Deacon Perkins, was "uncharitable" if not downright dishonest.
Joanna Towne set herself up against the whole Gould clan in her spirited
defense of the Reverend Gilbert. This may well have been the origin of her
reputation as a 'witch' in Topsfield."
Parts of the court case against Gilbert is then described where Joanna is
found defending him against the powerful Gould clan. Also, Edmund Bridges
- husband to Sarah Towne (Joanna's daughter)- spoke up to defend him as well.
"Joanna Towne and her son-in-law Edmund Bridges appeared for Gilbert and,
therefore, against the powerful Gould clan. Even more to her disadvantage
was the fact that she spoke for Gilbert after he had been censured by the
court. She was truly a rebellious ancient widow."
Joanna had all the known 'attributes' of the majority of the accused
witches - she was old, widowed, female, and poor.
"Joanna Towne, although never formally accused fills all of these
specifications...Undoubtedly the gossip about her did terrible damage to
her daughters."
It is believed that her rebelliousness at this time is what in 1692 caused
some townspeople to say "like their mother before them", when referring to
the witchcraft accusations against the 3 Towne girls.
The ministers who followed Gilbert after his censureship by the courts,
also had their share of lawsuits and discontented townspeople. The town was
not without strife and tension, right up to the witch trials, and it is
believed that it was the continued jealousies, petty arguments over land
disputes and ministers salaries etc., that eventually split the townspeople
into the 'accusers' and the 'accused.'

Sharon,
This is news to me, as I was only aware of her daughters being accused. I
wonder if anyone on the list might be able to shed some light on this?!
