Thank you for the replies. I am looking really hard at Thomas and Lucy Cloyd. The birth year is off by one, but the county that this Willie lived is not too far away from Cumberland.
Thanks for your help. If you come up with anything else, please let me know!

You'll find Jas. C. and Eliza J. on the 1880 Burkesville, Cumberland, KY census with Leola - age two. Louisa J. birthplace says Monroe county, KY. All were b. Keene - 1889; Horace A. - 1891; Mable Laurial - 1893; Leah Ola - 1895; Hanse Goff (says b. 1887); Willie Turk - 1889 (appears dates may be off due to the date of 1889 for J. Keene). I am trying... and it seems failing, to find the parents of William Turk Cloyd who is my Great Grandfather. He was born in or near Burkesville, KY on 26 August 1889. The mother of my Grandfather was Ula Gertrude Daffron.
I have tried different archives, states he lived, calling Kentucky, even cold calling Cloyd's in Cumberland County, KY. all to no avail.
Information seems pretty sparse. Any information would be greatly appreciated.

The only spelling of Cloyd that I have come across is Cloyd and Cloyed, not Cloyde.

My great grandparent's James Knox Polk CLOYDE and his wife Sarah Elizabeth Bayless moved to Polk Co., Missouri from Washington Co., TN. in 1857. When they moved they added the "E" at the end of CLOYD. I was told about 25 years ago it was someone in the family believed in owning slaves but James CLOYDE didn't so he took his family and left. I don't know all the details (it's been to much time has passed)or if it's even true.
I would appreciate any information, pics, stories about any of the family.

Did you take pics when you went to the grave yard? If not you need to go back and take some.
Look for any families graves and take pics. Also, you said Newett's grave is supposed to be there but it must be unmarked. On my Dad's side, his great grandad has a head stone but there is nothing that says his wife is buried there. I found the lady who has the cemetery book (it list all the names and where their located) she said Dad's great grandmother was buried there next to her husband. There is no marker with her name on it but it does have large stones at the head and foot of the grave. You might be able to find who has the book and see if it has anything in it. Also you might check at the library to see if they have a copy or tell you who is keeping track of the burials now. All cemeteries have them.

I have a lot of that Newitt info. also. I can't remember where I got it. I visited the Blakesburg cemetery in 1990 but at that time I wasn't into genealogy so I missed some good opportunities. Some of my relatives lived in Ottumwa and my father was born in Blakesburg.

A distant cousin has given me all the info I have about Newitt and Mason. Her last name was spelled Cloyed, but I think the original spelling was without the 'e'. I grew up in Ottumwa, IA which is about 15 minutes from Blakesburg so I have seen Masons tombstone and some of the others. There is a belief that Newitt's grave is there also, but is not marked. I don't know if this is true or not. There is also an oral history I have that was said to have been passed down from Newitt to his granddaughter Laura Christy Knapp, daughter of Hannah. In it Newitt states that 'the Cloyds were of old English stock', that his parents died when he was but a small baby and that he was raised by a Black woman who was a slave of a planter of the community. He also says that as a young child a girl several years older came to visit him and said she was his sister and her name was Emily, but that he never saw or heard from her again. I have not come across an Emily in any of my searches.!
There are more details of his life he told and I can also pass those on too if anyone would like. I would really like to be able to find out who Newitt's parents were, but I just keep hitting dead ends.

My gggrandfather was Caleb Cloyd (although he might have added an "e" to the Cloyd last name around his time). I know that Mason Binford Cloyd is buried in the Blakesburg cemetery although I'm not sure where. Some of my relatives are also buried there. No one is quite sure about Newitt's burial location.

Has this Newett's parents ever been located? My Newitt Cloyd was born in Alabama in 1821, brother Hiram. This would be before the other Newett and Mason Binford were married. There is no record that we can find of the father's name who married Elizabeth Doddridge, daughter of Noah Doddridge. Noah was from Virginia also.
All we know is that Noah was in Hancock and Baldwin Counties in the late 1700's and the early 1800's. He had a land deal with a Joshua Cloud in Georgia. Our Newitt had a son named Joshua, his first, we think, that died apparently because except for one census, he is not heard of again.
The strange thing is that a group of my Texas relatives moved to Iowa and we cannot figure out why unless they had other Cloyd relatives there.
My Newitt married Elizabeth Macon, daughter of Gideon Macon and ? Pugh before he came to Texas. He had two daughters by her Mary and Ophelia. She died and he married my gg grandmother Rebecca Bell in 1850.

I'm responding to an email from 2009. My G G G Grandfather was Newitt or Newitte Cloyd who married Mason Binford in 1822 in Northampton Co., NC. They had several children and I descended from William who was Perry's father. Other children of Newitt and Mason were Hannah, Caleb, Joseph, Joshua, Benjamin, Sarah, and Gulia. I am trying to find out more about this Newitt who settled in Blakesburg, IA.
