Let me have some time to study my records a little more. I am showing a James Cloyd in my line who died in Lincoln, Ky. in 1817. My Elizabeth's father, James, was buried in Mt. Juliet, Tennessee in the family cemetery, but there is a connection somewhere. I'll get back to you.

Thanks so much for your reply. Your Elizabeth Cloyd sounds promising, though Margaret & James were common names among Cloyds. Do you have the parents' names & where they were in VA? In James Cloyd's will recorded in Lincoln, KY, in 1804, he mentions sisters Peggy (Margaret) & Polly (Mary) who married a Lockridge. He mentions Polly's children: Charles, Polly Hood, Nancy Robertson & James & John. I found a James Cloyd in Augusta Co.,VA, court records, a James in Botetourt Co., VA, in 1770, & a James in Lincoln Co., KY, in 1790. I've given up research on this name, so I'm pleased to have your imput.

My Elizabeth Cloyd married Henry Patton Thompson in 1780 and moved from Virginia to Mt. Juliet Tennesee, just east of Nashville in the late 1700's. Tennessee may still have been North Carolina then. She had a sister Margaret and a brother James P.Cloyd and another brother living in Mt. Juliet named Ezekiel, who was a Presbyterian preacher.

Hello, Could you tell me please who the parents of Elizabeth Cloyd Patton are? The Cloyd in my ancestry is Margaret Cloyd with a brother James who were in KY in the late 1700s.
Margaret married John Nash (I don't know when or where) & they moved to Rutherford County,TN, around 1800.

After many years of research, I still have no firm direction for our Newitt Cloyd b. 1821 Alabama and died in Austin County, Texas in 1869. His grandfather was Noah Doddridge of Clarke Co. Alabama. He was married to Elizabeth Macon in Clarke Co. They moved to Texas with two daughters, Mary and Ophelia. Elizabeth died in Texas before 1850 and Newitt married my gg grandmother Rebecca Bell.
In my book From Jamestown to Texas, I tell this whole story of the Bell brothers coming to Texas from Florida in approximately 1821. It is a fascinating story. Newitt apparently got a job working on James Bell's plantation in Texas and there is where he met 17 year old Rebecca. He is listed as living on the plantation in 1850 census. Later, he became the manager of the Groce plantation. Jared Groce, next door neighbor to James Bell was called the Father of Cotton in Texas. He entered Texas about the same time and brought with him about 90 slaves from Georgia.
Opelia Cloyd married the grandson of Jeremiah Cloud also of Georgia. There were connections back in Georgia and South Carolina to the families of Brewer and Cato and also to those of William Barrett Travis, commander of the Alamo. There are many connections to Travis brought out in the book I wrote.
Further research going back into the early 1600's in Virginia, show that the Travers and Barretts had ajoining plantations near the James River. In my second history, Virginia The Cradle of America, I explore all the different families along that river and their connection to the founding families of America. A Joshua Cloyd was among the earliest settlers in that region. I explore the Southhampton Cloyds as well as the other branch who came from Ireland to Augusta Co.
The biggest question is, do they lead back to the CLOUDS who came from England or the CLOYDS who came from Ireland but originated in Scotland.
I have file cabinets full of info on all these lines. Some info tracks Noah Doddridge back to Bertie Co. NC. Most of those who came to Berties originated in Surry Co VA along the Blackwater River. In VCA I trace those families and their intricate connection.
If you are sincere about tracking these families, I suggest that you get these books and then contact me at bettystrails(a)yahoo.com. My website www. bettystrails .com has details on these books.
