Mary, thanks for your response. It looks like I may have tripped into some bad data (certainly not a surprise). Maybe that's why there was no author's name :-)
But if you or anyone else has an idea where Rebecca might fit in, I'd certainly appreciate hearing from you.
Lou

I have the Cloyd Bayse & Tapp Family Book. There is no Mary Gordan listed in the index; however I find Mary Gordon on page 70 who married Joseh Cloyd. The book says this Joseph was born 12/11/1768. Joseph and Mary's children are listed as
Gen. Gordon, Thomas, David, Elizabeth--no unidentified one listed.
Could not find your other names in the book.
Apparently, the person at this website has added info of their own at the website. (or is looking at a different edition of the book)

I found a Cloyd family web page using a search engine that does not list the author's name or provide an email address for the author. This page states, though, that the book "Genealogy of the Cloyd, Basye and Tapp families in America" by Augustus Davis Cloyd was the basis of much of the information.
On the page is listed Joseph Cloyd (b. 1742) who married Mary Gordan, with a list of their children. In the list of children is "Unidentified Daughter CLOYD". (On the web page, Joseph is listed as #1128, and the unidentified daughter is listed as #1154, if this numbering scheme is the same as in the book.)
If anyone has the book, can you tell me, please, what is said about the unidentified daughter. What evidence is/was there of such a daughter, and/or what is the source of that information?
I am trying to find the parents of Rebecca ???, who married (1) Capt. Thomas Maxwell ca. 1778-1779, and (2) John Hays. Capt. Thomas Maxwell was in the militia as a scout at the same time that Joseph Cloyd was serving, and in the same area. Thomas Maxwell was killed by Indians in 1782 during the rescue of the Ingles family. Rebecca's daughter, who married Newitt Drew, named her first-born son James Cloyd Drew. So... Playing the name game, I figure there is a good chance that Rebecca's father was a Cloyd, and Col. Joseph seems at this point to be the best candidate.
Any help, tips, or insight appreciated.
