Betty,
You're very welcome, and thank you for your reply.
The 1850 Jersey Co., census shows John Gibbs with wife Elizabeth Barnes and daughters Salinda (Clarinda) age 5, and Rebecca Jane age 3. Daughter Mary born 26 Jun 1854 is enumerated in the 1860 census with her sisters. These are the only children of John & Elizabeth that I know of. Elizabeth died between the birth of her last daughter and John's marriage to Sarah.
In the 1850 Jersey census, John Gibbs lived within one household of his father Valentine Austin Gibbs. About nine households from them at 74/74 was the following family:
George Clowers, 38, m, b. TN
Edy, 40, f, b. TN
Keelan, 16, m, b. IL
Francis M., 14, m, b. IL
De Marquis L., 10, m, b. IL
James, 6, m, b. IL
George, 3, m, b. IL
I would tend to believe this George is a brother of your John Clower/s, and that he also was b. in TN. It may be that John Gibbs met Sarah through this George as the were both newly widowed.
The Mary J. Clowers, c. 1842, does not show in the 1860 census - married, deceased...? John (c.1851) and Sarah (c.1854) Clower/s show in 1860 census. (Note - Sarah J. Clower b. abt 1833 & Sarah b. c.1854?) Your John Clower deceased between 1854 and Sarah's marriage to John Gibbs.
Patrick b. abt 1848....and you have a Martha A. b. abt 1848. Could they be the same person? Son? Daughter? Could be a nickname, or middle name? Have to look into that - but that's what makes this so enjoyable.

I am so excited to hear from you! Yes, I am pretty sure she is the same Clower/s. According to my Great Grandfather's marriage license her name was Sarah Anderson Smith. She was first married to John Clowers on February 13, 1834, in Green County, Illinois and they lived in Macoupin County, IL in 1850. The children have me confused though. Jackson N was I believe Jackson Newton Clowers, and George is my Great Grandfather, but the other children seem to be mixed up. I have in addition to those two a Sarah J born about 1833 (she could already be married in 1860) Mary J born about 1842, and Martha A born about 1848. There was no Patrick or John listed in 1850. I wonder if the Census taker got the kids all mixed up? Do you have a list of the Gibbs children from another census? I will be happy to compare notes. I haven't persued this family a lot because I just keep getting dead ends but I would love to know more about them. Thanks for replying. Betty

John Gibbs was my 3rd Great-Grandfather. He married first, Elizabeth Barnes, 3 Oct 1844 in Greene Co., IL - from whom I descend. He married second as below:
John Gibbs/Sarah Clowers; marriage recorded Vol. A, pg. 85.(Jersey Co., IL). Sarah had previously been married to an unknown Clower/s; her maiden name unknown. I have her born abt. 1814, TN.
CENSUS - July, 1860 - Jersey Co., IL
John Gibbs, 40, farmer, real estate value - $1,500., personal property value - $700.; Sarah, 46, wife; Jackson N. Clower, 13, b. IL; Clarinda Gibbs, 14; Patrick Clowers, 12, b. IL; Rebecca J. Gibbs, 12; John Clower, 9, b. IL; Sarah Clower, 6, b. IL; Mary L. Gibbs, 5; George Clowers, 20, b. IL.
I believe this is the George, b. ca 1839/40 married to Sarah Lofton. He may be a son of Sarah, or a son of a previous marriage of the deceased Clower/s. The Gibbs children enumerated in the census are of Elizabeth Barnes. I would like to learn more about this Clower family too.
Good Luck!
