Susan,
1. Unfortunately, the DAR Record does not give any sources and I am sure that Miss Virgil Cavaness has passed on.
2. The date of J.L Clower and Fatha Ann's marriage can probably be found in records at the Shelby Co., AL Archives and Museum through a marriage certificate or license. Bobby Joe Seales is the webmaster of that site by way of USGenWeb.
3. I also have the obituary of J.L. Clower sent to me by a cousin (John Clower) in Rogers, AR. It was sent to him by a relative. It was probably from an 1891 issue of the "Monticello Advance" or the "Monticellonian" newspaper. You also might find the information in an 1891 issue of "The Arkansas Methodist" magazine.
4. I honestly cannot tell you where I found Johathan Clower's middle name (Henry). I cannot find the source, but I have an idea that it came from Glen B. Nicholas (he and I have the same great grandfather-Andrew Shuler Green). The latest Email I have had from him (some time ago) is <gbnicholas(a)mindspring.com>. His address is" 1275 Point of Pines, Guntersville, AL 35976. I have not heard from him in a year or so.
If you live in Arkansas, the Arkansas History Commission in Little Rock has microfilm of the DAR Record, The Arkansas Methodist Magazine, and old issues of the newspapers.
You have an excellent web site!
May I Email you with some further information?

I am a descendant of James Lawrence Samuel Butts Clower and wife, Fatha Ann Coker. This is not the first time I have seen their marriage date/location, but it is the first time I have seen this source:
Mrs. John Nelson Ware, comp., Genealogical Records Committee Reports, Vol. X, 1935-1936, (Arkansas History Commission, Little Rock. Gen. M/F File: D.A.R. Arkansas Genealogical Records Vol. 10, Ser. I, [Vol. 9-Part of-Vol. 15]. Roll 2. "Record sent by Miss.Virgil Cavaness, Member of David Love Chapter, February 1936"), p. 5. Copy in possession of author.
I have never been able to prove this date, and would love to have some kind of definite proof.
Also, I have the original typed copy of the obituary for James Lawrence Samuel Butts Clower, and have it typed on my website.
Another question: Where is it shown that Jonathan Clower's middle name was Henry. I haven't seen anything on that before.
Your website is very interesting. Thanks for any help.

I appreciate the information!
So far I haven't found Jennie Lu Clower or Ed Cowan in an 1880 census. Her parents were dead by then; I was surprised she was not with her siblings with the Zachry family in the 1880 Smigh Co, Texas census.
Could she have been married to Ed Cowan by then? He would have been 18; she 14 or 15. I have heard the 1890 Federal census was lost by fire; Jennie Lu was supposed to be dead by then.
Then there is the whole "Cloud Maker" or "Claud Maher" issue. Some websites list these names as Ed Cowan's wife. These might be misspellings of the same name, but I wouldn't expect confusion with Cowan, Jennie Lu. Anyone have any ideas on this?
I looked at one online list of people buried in the Antioch Cemetery near St. Jo but didn't find the Clowers. Unmarked grave? Incomplete list?
Lynda Balch, could you tell me where you found the info that Clowers were buried in Antioch?

I believe that there are a lot of us out there from this lineage. I show that Before 1870 Daniel F. Clower and his family moved to Cook County, Texas and are buried at Antioch Cemetery which is near St. Jo, Texas. I tried for about an hour to find any of them on census records past 1870 and could not locate any except the three girls. There is one difference in information you receive/gave...Mary C. is Mary Elizabeth. Maybe you can locate burial records or seach old newspaper for area in Texas. See if you can find marriage records online for the area you think Jennie Lu was married. Good Luck.

I believe your Jennie Lu belongs somewhere to my family. My family started with George Clower in Pennsylvania, and his son Jonathan Clower in North Carolina, then moved to Georgia where some stayed, moved to Alabama, where some stayed, moved to Arkansas, where some stayed and then on to Texas around Delta and Fannin Counties. I'm not sure where you fit in, but you might try researching that line and see if you find anything.

Thanks for the information!
In the 1870 Kaufman Co., Texas census we see "Value of Personal Estate $100". Quite a drop from $17,000 in the Macon Co. census of 1860. I guess the Daniel Clower family were pretty badly affected through the Civil War era.
I am a genealogy "newbie" and do not understand the intricacies of interpreting census records. I will work toward trying to determine where the family farm was located. I would like to see what a $17,000 estate meant in 1860 terms. I have a pretty good idea what $100 meant.

Looking for info on Jennie Lu Clower born about 1866, found in the Kaufman Co., Texas census of 1870, as below, with her family. She died around late 1887 or early 1888.

I find some of her siblings living with the Zachry family in Smith Co., Texas in the 1880 census.
CENSUS RECORDS - SMITH COUNTY, TX - INDEX FOR 1880 US CENSUS
Clower Emmer 7 101-52 (Emma)
Clower Lula 16 101-52
Clower Sarah 18 101-52
Zachry Absalum 45 101-52
Zachry Amelia 40 101-52 (Amelia Nunn)
Zachry Elizabeth 14 101-52
Zachry Eugene 12 101-52
Zachry Henry 2 101-52
Zachry Ida 9 101-52
Zachry Jeshie 7 101-52 (Jessie)
Zachry Romallas 60 101-52 (Brother of Absalum)
Zachry Sarah 5 101-52
The Clower girls are listed as nieces in the census record. Jennie Lu Clower would have been 14 if I believe the information that she was born in 1866; I am surprised I don't find her with her sisters.
"Emmer" is Emma Clower. Absalum Zachry is later Abner D. Zachry; his wife Amelia Zachry was Amelia Catherine Nunn. Amelia's sister Sarah Jane Nunn married Daniel F. Clower; Daniel and Sarah Clower were the parents of the girls. To make things more complex, Alonzo Perry Zachry, a son of Abner Zachry by a prior marriage, later married Lula Clower.
She is supposed to have married Edward (or Edmund) Cowan in Smith Co., Texas, and died around 12-24-1887 supposedly near Bonham in Fannin Co., Texas. Her parents are supposed to have died near St. Jo Texas (in Montague Co.) or in Cooke Co (just east of St. Jo) in 1878 (Daniel F. Clower) and after 1873 (Sarah J. Nunn Clower).
All these Clower children born before 1869 are listed as born in Alabama. The next children, James J. Clower, Thomas Jefferson Clower, Samuel Clower, and Emma Clower were born in Texas. One record mentions "near Byer, Texas".
Byer is in far north Clay County (which was once part of Cooke County), and is not too far from where the Zachry family ended up in the late 1880's.
So I am looking for the other Clowers, and Edward Cowan, from Smith County, where Jennie Lu Clower and Edward Cowan are supposed to have been married, to the Bonham area in Fannin County, where Jennie Lu Clower Cowan is supposed to have died in childbirth, on west to Cooke County and Clay County. I can't find Jennie Lu Clower, Daniel F. Clower and his wife Sarah Jane Nunn Clower, or the brothers of Jennie Lu Clower.
I have been unable to find their graves, or to find Ed Cowan between 1860 (St. Clair Co., Alabama census) and when he arrived in Sadler (Grayson Co., Texas) around 1890.
I would appreciate any help you folks can give me.
