Ok, I was intrigued by the thief idea. My best friend from high school is married to a man from Germany so I asked him--his last name is Rehm.
(1) Klauer means indeed somebody who steels. "Klauen" = to steel in contemporary German, a relatively old word; (a thief is a "Dieb", btw, closer to the english word). from my perspective, I would disagree with the "honest" part - no meaning like that in "klauen". but I have no proof or disproof
(2) Klauer is a German family name, but very unusual.. A quick search find 471 entries in the German telefon books under "Klauer"; This is a very small number (for comparison: "Rehm" comes back with "too many entries", although it is fairly uncommon name)

I agree with pretty much everything except that I don't believe the name was mispelled Klauer, I think that is the correct original spelling. It was Anglicized to Clower. I believe that the Clower's came from Neuwied Germany, a town on the Rhine not far from Bonn. As a side note, Klauer is a very old German word not used any longer. It means 'honest thief.' That would be a cat burglar or pickpocket. Someone who has a talent as opposed to a dishonest thief who clubs you over the head and then takes your money. But we don't need to spread that story around.

Meredith,
Sounds like we are talking about the same George Clower's. And I agree about George Jr';s BD. I have him b. 1759 Chester Co, PA. I have info on his brothers Jonathan and Daniel if interested. A few bits and pieces about other siblings too. How many children do you show for George Sr? I have two Jonathan's and I can't figure out if they are the same person or if one died an infant.

I think George, Sr. shows up on a 1765 tax list for Berks Co., PA and then the next thing I have is he moved around 1773 to Orange Co., NC. On 3 Sept 1779 he got 300 acres on the waters of Little River, Orange Co., from the state of NC. George, Jr. is 40-50 years of age on the 1830 census or 1780-1790. I tend to think he's way closer to 1780 or earlier.

Very impressive Meredith! I would like to add your info to my GEDCOM database but I want to check with you on something first. George Sr. and Elizabeth Morgan had 8 children according to my notes (Elizabeth's parents were James and Eleanora). George Jr I show being born in 1759 in Chester Co, PA. Do we have the same George Jr? I am from the VA line of Clower's so I focus slightly less on the GA line because I can't link them. That's not the best attitude, but I only have so much time.
