Beginning March 2nd, 2020 the Mailing Lists functionality on RootsWeb will be discontinued. Users will no longer be able to send outgoing emails or accept incoming emails. Additionally, administration tools will no longer be available to list administrators and mailing lists will be put into an archival state.
Administrators may save the emails in their list prior to March 2nd. After that, mailing list archives will remain available and searchable on RootsWeb
Hi Susan,
I'm delighted to hear that the List is now in such good hands. Congratulations
and welcome to your new job. Until Rootsweb gets the kinks worked out, we will
consider you as our new leader.
Your suggestion about posting our Clower lines is a good one - sort of a "Roll
Call". It will help us fit the puzzle together and hopefully find many missing
pieces. Hope we all will send in our lines.
So that we can have them all together, they can be posted at the Clower Family
Home page at http://john.rootsweb.com/Clower/clower.html where they are listed
as "Individual Lines"
And so this "List" collects and shares the information and the "Home Page" keeps
it all together on file. The "Information Form" is a good way to share
information about some of your ancestors so would you be willing to use a few?
Thanks,
John

Hi all,
I've been trying to become the list admin for a few weeks. I have received
emails confirming that I am, but when I go to the adopt-a-list web site, it
still shows to be adoptable. I tried again tonight. Hope it works.

John,
I just checked Amy's site and everything, including page 9, seemed to be
intact. I really don't know that anything will happen to that site, but
perhaps we should request that it remain. Amy and I worked on that for sooo
long, I, too, would hate to see it go missing.
The cousin researcher of whom I always speak, was George Wesley Clower.
Jr., an Atlanta banker, b. 28 Sep 1909, d. 15 Dec 1974, son of George Wesley
Clower and Mary Eliza Mitchell. His thinking was as follows (and note he
leaves out the Henry Clower about whom he, possibly later, has so much
data).
At one time George Wesley Clower seemed to think along the following
lines. I have another page of notes of his, which I can't put my hands on
just now, which shows a somewhat different approach to the different lines.
In one undated note he suggested:
"At the present there are six extensive Clower families in the U. S. who
are directly traced from ancestors who came to PA during the first half of
the 18th century and are as follows:
1. George Clower (b. prob. around 1735-40) of Berks Co., PA who married
Elizabeth Morgan around 1759. At least three of their children were born in
PA and at least two were born in Orange Co., NC.
2. Jacob Clower of Berks Co., PA (1765-66 Tax lists) unmarried at that time.
He was probably Jacob Clower later living in Shenandoah Co., VA, and who
daughter Elizabeth (1777-1854), m. first Mr. Thompson and had four children.
Elizabeth m. 2nd 1804 in Grainger co., TN, Jackson Smith (1777-1852). Their
son William C. Smith m. Magena Neal.
3. John Clower b. prob. PA around 1755, went from NC to GA in 1773 and
obtains a grant of 100 acres "on the Ogeechee in a bend of the river about 5
miles above the Upper Trading Path." John appears to have m. Jennie Perkins
and reared a family in Warren Co., GA, where several of his children married
from 1796-1808.
4. Peter Clower was in GA as a soldier in the Revolution and participated in
the Battle of Kettle Creek in Wilkes Co., GA, Feb 14, 1779. We have no
evidence that he married or left children. (This Peter Clower is NOT to be
confused with the Peter Clower (1775-1851) GA State Senator, first son of
John Clower and Jennie Perkins.)
At the time he wrote this George Wesley Clower felt that there was strong
circumstantial evidence that the four above may have been brothers. We,
today are still looking for some proof.
5. George Clower (1754-1822) a VA Rev. Soldier lived in Woodstock, VA, and
reared a family there.
6. John Clower (1755-1832) a PA Rev. Soldier lived in Chester Co., PA, and
reared a family there.
7. Abraham Clower and his wife, Ann, had a son, William Clower, b. 1802 in
Trenton, NJ, d. 1891 in IL. Reared a large family now in IL.
NOTE: At the time he wrote this he omitted HENRY CLOWER and his line, which
appears to be another separate line.
Please don't assume this is the last word on the Clower lines, or that it
is even George Wesley Clower's last word on the subject. I WILL find the
other notes and post them soon. I'm afraid some people came to believe he
knew EVERYTHING about all Clowers and though he work was monumental, it does
have mistakes. One error which impacted me and the researchers of John and
Jennie Perkins Clower personally, was a misreading of a deed made by John
Clower, Sr. to his daughter, Mary "Polly" Clower Harvey, which led George
Wesley to believe that our John Clower, Sr. went to MS with his son. This
had a huge impact on his thinking which he shared with many other Clower
researchers. We are still getting it cleared up!
Enough for now. Do try Amy's site again for I didn't find any pages missing.
Dixie
As luck would have it, I have your line (or a portion of it) through 8
generations. A distant cousin researched all Clowers for many years (between
1930s and 1974) in preparation for a book which he didn't live to complete.
Your gr gr grandfather, Maxwell, was born in 1876 and died 1946. His
siblings were John Lowery Clower, Samuel K. Clower, Lillian Clower (m. a Mr.
Phillips), Frank Clower, Gertrude Clower (m. a Mr. Hunt) and Edward. They
are the 5th generation of your family to be in America it seems.
Your first ancestor to come to America was Henry Clower, born in Germany
according to family tradition, married in America and had one son. Henry died
soon afterwards. According to early records in Pennsylvania it appears likely
(according to my cousin) that Henry, George, John and Conrad, all of whom are
found in Chester Co. records between 1732 and 1755 were possibly kin.
This is not my line so I don't have it entered in my genealogy program. I
would be happy to photocopy what I have and send it snail mail. You are sooo
lucky! Trust me, genealogical research typically is NOT this easy!

Subject: CLOWER-D Digest V01 #2
Need a marriage date/location for James Lawrence Samuel Butts CLOWER and Fatha Ann COKER. They married between 1833 and 1836 in AL or GA. They both lived in Bibb Co., AL about that time, but may have moved to Shelby Co., AL with James' parents, Jonathan CLOWER and Mary SHULER CLOWER. As far as I know there are no existing Bibb Co. marriage records for this time period.
Can anyone help?
