Hello,
To Clower researchers seeking information concerning John Clower (Sr.?)
of Morgan County, GA:
The volume listed below appears to contains inaccurate information:
Orphans Court Records (Abstracts of Wills and Estates) 1812-1859, Marion
Co., MS, copied and edited by E. Russ Williams, Jr., 1962. In this book,
John Clower is listed as giving his daughter, Polly (Clower) Harvey, a slave.
The deed is dated 1809, Morgan Co., GA, and Polly Harvey is listed as a
resident of Jones Co., MS. In parenthesis is added, "Clower was then a
resident of Marion Co.,. MS, 1816).
A microfilmed copy of the actual deed in Salt Lake City, reads, instead,
that Polly Harvey was in 1809 a resident of Jones Co., GEORGIA, and the slave
was to come to her UPON THE DECEASE of John Clower, her father.
Since the deed is registered in Marion Co. MS, in 1816, and Morgan
County, GA records indicate the John Clower died in early 1816, this would
appear to indicate that this John Clower (Sr.?) was Polly's father.
The John Clower (Jr.?) who was living in Marion Co., MS in 1816 and who
was given power of attorney in Nov. 1816 by Polly Clower Harvey's husband,
Michael Harvey was Polly 's brother. John Jr. was instructed to return to GA
to conduct any business for Michael Harvey. In that time period it would
have been customary for a husband to act on his wife's behalf in legal
matters. Thus, it would appear that John (Jr.?) was sent to GA upon the
death of his and his sister, Polly Clower Harvey's father to check on family
matters.
If this is old news to everyone, please forgive me, but some of us (John
Clower, Sr. and Jr. descendants) have been thrashing through this for several
years. Particularly troublesome was the remark that "Clower was now a
resident of this county (Marion Co., MS), since that was interpreted by some
to indicate John Jr. and Polly's father was in MS. in 1816. This appears to
be an editorial comment of Mr. Williams, the compiler, since it does not
exist on the deed or its registration.
The Marion Co. Clerk of Court's office has not responded to several
written queries even though checks and SASE have been included. Finally a
paid researcher was sent to Marion Co. and was told they no longer had the
volume, Orphans Court Records, 1812-1827. Fortunately, a microfilm of the
book exists in the Mormon Library. (L 879987).
