Hi Donna,
Thanks for getting back to me.
I just spoke to my Father and he is 75 so somtimes he has trouble remembering things but..... Dad believes that it was the Clows that ran a photo business and it was my Great Grandfather Juen that painted in the photos for them and also worked in oils on canvas. the one painting I have is not signed.
and is of a girl in a boat under the moonlight.
My father has no memory of the Clows painting but he can't rule it out.
They did travel with the photo business so a photo or painting might show up any where.
wish I could be of more help!
I asked about the sir names you mentioned also but it did not ring any bells
My Great Great Grandfather jacob Clow married Sarah Rodgers . family history says that Sara always used :sarah Rodgers Clow because she was very proud to be related to the man of Rodgers Rangers fame.My father believes she hailed from the new england area from a sea faring family and jacob and sarah may have lived in Worchester, n.y. He remembers seeing a photo of the clow family farm marked Worchester,N.Y.
My heavens I have written a book here!
Somtimes little bits of info can help though.
I hope you have some luck with this!
Laura

Laura, I don't know how I missed this post but sorry for getting back so.....late, anyway, The Clow that I am trying to research ,painted this picture in 1900, it is very romantic . It is of a peasant couple leaning their backs against each other, it appears that he is flirting with her and by the expression on her face, she seems very interested in what he is saying. The picture is about 18x 36 at best, and is done in oils. The frame is made of plaster , very ornate, and is gold. There is another picture in the family by this same Clow, this one is a man clipping a lock of hair from a women , who has fallen asleep while mending a net. It would be great if we could find the connection. Can you describe your paintings and what date, it may have been painted? Donna P.S. This Clow person is said to have been related to my Grandmother, surnames: Clark, Thorpe, perhaps Scottish origin.

I need dates of your ancestry. Here is what I have in our genealogy:
James Fitzjames Clow b. 1734 Edinburg Scotland d 1787(wife Sarah Beach).
One of three children was James Beach Clow, born 1772 NY d. 1836 PA.(wife Nancy Agnes Culbertson)
James Beach Clow had eleven children, but only one named Edward was in his line, as follows:
Edward Stockton Clow, born 1811 Pittsburgh, PA. (wife Margaret Fleming) Edward died June 12, 1894 in Milan, IL.
He had 7 children; James L. born 1851 PA/OH died aft 1920 in Milan, IL. Mary a twin, Catharine b. abt 1841, Edward Clow b. abt 1842 PA/OH, Sarah b. abt 1848, Ella b. abt 1859.
James L Clow b 1851of Milan, IL had two children, Mae Linzy Clow and Frederick Clow. Mae was my wife's grandmother. She is buried in Savannah, GA.
Is it possible that Edward C. born 1842 was your grandfather? If so, you would be a cousin of my wife.
Hope this helps. e-mail me at frobi19807(a)aol.com.
Fred

I am Edward S. Clow, son of James R., g-son of Edward C., gg-son of Edward S.
I believe it was this Edward S. who moved to Milan, IL way back when. He had sons Edward and James, and operated a general store there for many years.
I'm just starting this genealogy thing and you probably know more than I do about the Clow's.
